uMhlathuze leaders summoned to Empangeni public meeting over unresolved service delivery issues
The upcoming meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 4 June at 6pm, to be held at the Empangeni SME One Stop Shop at 44 Turnbull Street, has been arranged by Cllr Andre de Lange following a heated meeting with over 80 fuming residents on 15 May.
Many expressed outrage over long-standing, unresolved issues, calling for the mayor and city manager to answer.
'At every meeting, the same problems are discussed, the list gets longer and the problems aren't resolved. What are we paying rates for?' asked Renzo Perini, who has lived in the town since 1950.
He said how Union Street has become a urinal and that he has to remove faeces from his place of work.
'We keep on paying, but there's no efficiency, no productivity. Now the management must be taken to task,' he said.
'We need all the responsible people who have the authority, to come and respond to us,' said Sboniso Xulu.
'We need a management plan,' urged Adri Mansvelder.
Some of the complaints include:
· Persistent electricity outages and water cuts, often patched up instead of long-term fixes
· Municipal contractors need to be properly trained, particularly with water pipe fixes and electricity problems at main substations
· Potholes and faded road markings
· Lack of traffic officers to manage violations such as drivers racing down Paul Avenue
· Vagrants digging in bins
· Lack of service delivery: overgrown areas and uncut grass (with cutting collection routinely delayed), broken glass and litter in public areas
· Old Empangeni graveyard needs to be fenced properly
· Construction work lagging on Commercial Road outside Empangeni Library
· Better service delivery in Richards Bay compared to Empangeni
· Public drinking rampant and by-laws ignored, with a call for placing signage banning alcohol use in public areas
· Natural heritage destroyed by residents cutting down old trees (some 100 years old) on pavements
· Rampant crime
· Lack of accountability: no follow-up from prior complaints

'I don't know Mr Molefe': Gayton claps back at viral pic
Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie has clapped back at viral images of him and deputy-president Kenny Kunene, alongside a man mistaken to be Katiso Molefe, the Sandton businessman who allegedly ordered a hit on DJ Sumbody, real name Oupa John Sefoka. Earlier this week, Kunene was found at the residence of Molefe, whom police have since arrested. He has denied knowing Molefe personally. On social media, pictures of Gayton McKenzie, Kenny Kunene, and another man – mistakenly believed to be Katiso Molefe have gone viral. Moelefe is accused of allegedly ordering the hit on DJ Sumbody, who died in a hail of bullets in 2022. The images have been widely circulated, and even retweeted by Action SA leader Herman Mashaba. Gayton clapped back on his X account: 'This guy in the picture is not Molefe, not you of all people, don't fall for media nonsense.' In another X post, he shared: 'This guy in the picture is Dan Bhuga. You guys are desperate beyond. I don't know Molefe and never met him'. In a third, Gayton McKenzie accused the DA of being behind the misinformation. 'The DA was delivering fake pictures of me with a murder suspect to every house, but our people know that we would not lie to them. The WC is no longer a given for the DA, salute', he posted. Gayton McKenzie has come to Kenny Kunene's defense. Inmage via Instagram @kenny_kunene/@gaytonmck Like Gayton McKenzie, Kenny Kunene has also denied personally knowing Katiso Molefe. During an interview with eNCA, the outspoken Patriotic Alliance deputy-president claims he met Molefe once before being caught at his upmarket Sandton home this week. 'I have never been there before, I have no relationship with Mr Molefe. I don't have his cell number. The police established that. According to Kunene – he had accompanied a journalist to Molefe's house – and was at the 'wrong place at the wrong time, for the right reasons'. Brazilian judge threatens Bolsonaro over speech shared on social media
A Brazilian Supreme Court judge has threatened former president Jair Bolsonaro with imprisonment, arguing that the sharing of a speech of his by online users was a "violation" of a social media ban, according to a document accessed by AFP on Monday. The far-right former president, who is accused of attempting a "coup" against his successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, made a speech Monday that quickly went viral on social media. Bolsonaro did not post the speech from his own account, although his sons and political allies did so. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes -- with whom Bolsonaro has clashed often -- displayed posts from accounts on X, Instagram, and Facebook with videos, images, and text from Bolsonaro's speech to journalists in Congress. According to Moraes, the 70-year-old former president "delivered a speech to be shown on digital platforms." Bolsonaro is required to wear an electronic ankle bracelet in connection with the case, and to comply with other measures, including a ban from posting on social media. Moraes called on the former leader's lawyers to provide clarification within 24 hours "on the breach of the precautionary measures imposed, under penalty of immediate imprisonment." In an earlier decision on Monday, Moraes had warned that any dissemination of Bolsonaro's public speeches on social media platforms would constitute a violation of the measures. Bolsonaro, however, denounced the move as an act of "cowardice." He appeared before the cameras to show, for the first time, the electronic ankle monitor he wears on his left foot. "This is a symbol of the utmost humiliation," he said. "What matters to me is God's law," he added, rejecting the court's rulings. US President Donald Trump, who counts Bolsonaro among his allies, has waded into the controversy, accusing the Brazilian authorities of conducting a "witch hunt." His administration has imposed visa restrictions on Moraes over his conduct in the case, and announced 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian imports unless the charges are dropped. Eduardo Bolsonaro, one of the former president's sons, stepped down from his position as a congressman in March and moved to the United States, where he is campaigning for the Trump administration to intercede on his father's behalf. Moraes believes Bolsonaro and his son seek to "subject the functioning of the Supreme Court (of Brazil) to the control of the United States." Among the restrictions imposed on Bolsonaro is an order not to approach embassies or the governments of other countries. He must also remain at home at night and on weekends, although he denied any plans to flee Brazil.
