Bengaluru Police raid over 17 bars for illegally employing female servers, engaging in unlawful activities
Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Police have raided 17 bars across the city on charges of illegally employing female servers and engaging in unlawful activities. The bars were also conducting overtime operations and obscene dances, violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
A statement released in this regard by the office of the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner on Friday stated that 11 special teams had conducted raids and found violations of guidelines.
The Bengaluru City Police Commissioner received credible information that several bars and restaurants in the West zone of the city were illegally employing female servers and engaging in unlawful activities. Based on this information, 11 special police teams were formed in the West zone.
"A special raid was conducted on bars and restaurants falling under the jurisdictions of Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park and Ashoknagar Police Stations,' the statement said.
During the raid, it was found that 19 bars and restaurants were violating regulations by employing female workers who were provocatively dressed and standing near customers' tables in an indecent manner. Further violations included the absence of appointed female security guards, lack of cleanliness in kitchen areas, not designating or maintaining a proper smoking zone and operating beyond permitted hours, the statement said.
Customers who violated the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) regulations were fined on the spot. Reports have been submitted to the respective police stations for further legal action against the owners of the bars and restaurants, according to the statement.
Another significant finding was that violations were not limited to police regulations but also extended to health and excise departments. These findings have been communicated to the concerned departments, requesting appropriate action. Strict monitoring will continue for these commercial establishments in the coming days. If found violating regulations again, their licences will be cancelled, the statement said.
"If the public faces any inconvenience or notices any such violations, they are encouraged to call the helpline number. The identity of informants will be kept confidential,' Bengaluru Police said in the statement.
This special raid operation was conducted under the guidance of C. Vamsi Krishna, Joint Commissioner of Police, West Zone, and under the leadership of S. Girish, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Division, with the involvement of officers and staff from the Central and West Divisions as part of the 11 special police teams.

KOCHI: Renewed scrutiny of aviation safety, following the recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad, has shone the light on a concerning trend: Frequent incidents of passengers smoking inside planes, particularly in lavatories. According to police, there has been an increase in recent months of incidents involving passengers caught smoking on board overseas flights. In just the past two weeks, two passengers were detained for smoking on flights arriving in Kochi from Gulf countries. Officers of Nedumbassery police station said that at least six such cases have been registered in the last one year. The latest incident took place on June 15, when a passenger from Chalakudy was caught smoking in the lavatory of a Dubai-Kochi SpiceJet flight. Airport security officials detained the man and handed him over to local police. A case was registered under Section 118(e) of the Kerala Police Act for public nuisance and endangerment, and Sections 4 and 21 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) for smoking in prohibited areas. Last month, a similar offence was reported involving a Thrissur passenger travelling from Dubai. 'In recent months, we have been receiving frequent reports of passengers caught smoking on board, mostly in lavatories,' said Rajesh T R, deputy superintendent of police, Aluva. 'Smoking on flights is strictly prohibited due to the threat it poses to passengers and safety. Many offenders use e-cigarettes, assuming these won't be detected. Since these products are more accessible in foreign countries, passengers often carry and use them mid-flight. Though the offence is bailable, we do file a charge sheet and the accused must face trial,' he said.

755 kg gutkha, tobacco products, three cars seized in Erode
A special team of the district police on Thursday seized 755 kg of banned gutkha and tobacco products worth ₹4.55 lakh from three cars in Chithode. Acting on a tip-off that gutkha was being smuggled in cars, a team under the direct supervision of Superintendent of Police A. Sujatha, along with the Chithode police, intercepted two vehicles at Devankadu Junction on the Salem–Coimbatore National Highway. The drivers—V. Raveendran (37) of Kalingarayanpalayam in Bhavani and G. Ranjithkumar (25) of Moovendar Nagar in Elavamalai—gave evasive replies during questioning. Upon inspection, the police found 469 kg of gutkha and tobacco products hidden in the vehicles. The two men, along with the cars and the contraband, were taken to the Chithode police station. Further investigation revealed that the duo had collected the products from a car parked on a farmland at V. Mettur in Kumarapalayam, Namakkal district. The land belonged to Raveendran. An additional 286 kg of gutka and tobacco products were seized from the vehicle there. Police said the contraband had been purchased in bulk from Karnataka and was being distributed in retail across Erode and Namakkal districts. A case was registered against the two under Sections 111(2)(b) and 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 24(1) of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003. In total, gutkha and tobacco products worth ₹4,55,802, three cars, two mobile phones, and ₹3,000 were seized. The accused were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.

Terrorist Killed In Joint Operation By Army, Police In J&K's Udhampur
The Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in a joint operation, killed a terrorist in an encounter in Basantgarh in the Udhampur district of the Union Territory. Codenamed Operation Bihali, the White Knight Corps of the Army said the terrorist has been "neutralized" but the operation is still underway. The Army said the operation started based on specific intelligence received by the security forces, and the operation was launched earlier today. The security in Jammu and Kashmir has been increased ahead of the Amarnath yatra, and 180 companies of the Central police forces have been deployed. The 38-day-long yatra to 3,880-meter-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas is scheduled to start from the twin routes -- the traditional 48-km Pahalgam route in the Anantnag district and the 14-km shorter but steeper Baltal route in the Ganderbal district -- on July 3. On May 22, a soldier was killed in action during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar. Four terrorists were trapped in the area, and the encounter happened a week after six terrorists were eliminated in an operation in south Kashmir. Anti-terror operations have been ramped up in the region after the Pulwama terror attack on April 22, in which 26 people were killed.
