Balaramapuram road widening: Compensation disbursement to landowners likely this month
Thiruvananthapuram: Disbursement of compensation to 52 landowners affected by Kodinada-Vazhimukku road widening project is finally expected to commence this month after the district collector's office submits the finalised beneficiary list. Though state govt approved the package weeks ago, procedural delays in compiling the final list stalled the release of funds by the finance department. Parassala MLA C K Hareendran, overseeing the land acquisition, expressed confidence that the delay would be resolved swiftly. "There will not be any more delay. It's true there was some delay in handing over the list. The district collector is in New Delhi now. Once she returns, the list will be handed over and the compensation will be released," he said. The Rs 104-crore compensation, sanctioned by KIIFB, covers land acquisition and structure valuation. This is besides Rs 102.4 crore approved in June, raising the total compensation pool to approximately Rs 200 crore, including Rs 160 crore for land and Rs 40 crore for structures. Land acquisition efforts remained active despite the delay. Demolition along the 1.5 km stretch from Vazhimukku to Balaramapuram had begun earlier and was conducted by a Kunjalumoodu-based contractor under KRFB oversight. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The initial delay was mainly due to financial clearances and technicalities in verifying landowner documentation. Once the beneficiary list is submitted, the finance department will transfer funds to the district collector, who will redirect it to the special tahsildar, triggering direct bank transfers to landowners shortly thereafter. Following fund release, public works department will issue tenders by Sept with construction set to begin in Oct, said Hareendran. The expanded road, widened to 30.2m, aims to ease chronic traffic congestion on the NH-66 corridor and better connect Parassala and Neyyattinkara to Thiruvananthapuram. The removal of plans for an underpass at Balaramapuram Junction, due to local opposition, pivoted focus to utilising govt land along a 300m stretch near Thaikkappalli mosque, reducing private land requirements.

"Anna University is planning to bring online biometric attendance for all faculty members to verify whether the faculty members continue to work in the colleges. It would completely rule out the fake faculty members," the source added. Professors said there is a shortage of faculty members in emerging areas such as AI and data science programmes. " AICTE has allowed up to 20% of faculty members from the industry to teach courses in emerging areas. It would help to resolve the faculty shortage in computer-related programmes," professors said. There is also issue of qualification of science and humanity faculty members. The university found that many faculty did not have required NET, SET qualification. "Colleges can also appoint retired faculty members from govt colleges to teach science and humanities subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English to engineering students," a senior professor from the university said. The university also made it mandatory for all engineering colleges to upload the disclosure to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on their web portal, to inform students and parents about the facilities available in the college.

HC questions irregularities in preparing DPRs of Cuttack drain project
1 2 Cuttack: Orissa high court has taken serious note of irregularities in the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) related to the Rs 335.42 crore branch surface water channel (BSWC) drain project in Cuttack. A division bench of Justices S K Sahoo and V Narasingh, while hearing the matter on July 11, came down heavily on the housing and urban development department and noted with concern that the DPRs submitted by Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) were neither authenticated nor bore the names of officials involved in their preparation. The court termed the lapses as "startling". The bench also questioned how a Bhubaneswar-based private consultancy firm came to represent the city engineer (CMC) during a crucial meeting held on April 30. "There is nothing on record to indicate how the private company could represent a govt official," the court observed. "The lackadaisical manner in which the entire project is being handled is tell-tale," the bench remarked and directed the secretary of the department to file an affidavit by July 21, clarifying the appointment of the firm, reasons for overlooking IIT Bhubaneswar, and whether any departmental or vigilance inquiry is being initiated into the handling of the project. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The engineer has also been directed to submit a separate affidavit detailing the basis for involving the firm and referring the DPRs to Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla. The matter pertains to the proposed construction of five BSWC drains in the city. Despite a decision taken in Dec 2023 to consult IIT Bhubaneswar for an expert review of the DPRs, the documents were sent instead to VSSUT. The shift was based on a communication dated June 17 this year from the firm. "It does not stand to reason how the govt's direction to consult IIT Bhubaneswar, keeping in mind the hydraulic analysis required, was ignored," the bench stated. When questioned by the court, the engineer assured the revised DPRs would be submitted by July 25. However, the judges noted the absence of any explanation as to why the firm was involved and why the IIT's expertise was bypassed.
