RM100,000 allocation for 367 top SPM students in Kota Kinabalu: Chan

Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Foong Hing allocated over RM100,000, this year, to reward 367 high-achieving students who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. This marks the second consecutive year the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office has hosted the 'Anugerah Kecemerlangan SPM Madani' awards ceremony, which celebrates academic excellence and encourages students to continue striving for success. Chan, who is also Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, reaffirmed that quality education is a right for every student, regardless of race, religion or socioeconomic status. He underscored the Madani Government's commitment to ensuring equal access to education that can truly change lives and uplift communities. 'As Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised, quality education is the foundation of a Madani society. We must cultivate a generation that is not only knowledgeable but also morally grounded, in order to build an inclusive and competitive nation,' he said. 'As a member of the Madani administration, I fully support the Prime Minister's vision. We are committed to ensuring that no student is left behind – whether they come from B40 families, rural areas, or face physical and mental challenges.' The event was held at SJKC Chung Hwa Likas, last Saturday. Students who achieved between 6As and 11As received cash awards of RM250 to RM300 each. Among the recipients, 113 students scored 9As or above. Special awards were also presented for Best Male Student, Best Female Student, and Best Performing School. Notably, both the top male and female students were from Tshung Tsin Secondary School: Soh Yim Qin scored 10A+, while Mohammad Arif Mohammad Adam achieved 9A+ and 1A. Chan also welcomed the Madani Government's policy guaranteeing placement in the matriculation programme for all students who scored 10As and above in the 2024 SPM examination and applied for admission – regardless of race or background. He noted that this policy, introduced last year, reflects the government's commitment to fairness and equal opportunity in education. He added that the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office will continue to work closely with the Sabah Education Department (PPD) and local schools to improve education infrastructure, provide support for at-risk students, and encourage greater involvement from the community and private sector in shaping the future of education. Last year, Chan allocated RM55,000 to reward 205 students in Kota Kinabalu who achieved excellent results in the 2023 SPM examination.

Court to decide on blogger's sedition case on September 24

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The sessions court has fixed Sept 24 to deliver its decision in the sedition trial of blogger Wan Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, over a statement involving the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Wan Azri's lawyer, Rafique Rashid Ali, said the court fixed the date on Tuesday after the prosecution closed its case. Seven witnesses were called to testify. Wan Azri, 41, is accused of making the statement in a post on X, under the account sir_azri, at a condominium in Bukit Bintang at 12pm on April 29. If convicted under the Sedition Act, he faces a maximum fine of RM5,000, up to three years in prison, or both. The court is also expected to rule on July 9 in a separate sedition case involving Wan Azri. LDP calls for 20pc quota for Chinese UEC students in Sabah civil service, UMS

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Chin Su Phin has called on the GRS-led Sabah Government to implement a 20 per cent quota for Chinese Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) students in the civil service and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). He said that while the State's recognition of the UEC is welcomed, it must be followed by concrete policies to ensure fair access to public sector jobs and higher education for qualified Chinese students. Chin stressed that many academically capable UEC graduates continue to face barriers due to the lack of a structured and transparent entry pathway. He added that the underrepresentation of UEC students in public institutions pushes many to seek opportunities outside Sabah or even abroad. New border agency boss hopes to make impact within a year
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain has vowed to make the agency more impactful and visible within a year. 'We want to ensure the agency is visible and has an impact on society within a year,' he told reporters after clocking in at the agency's headquarters yesterday. Comm Mohd Shuhaily said his contract was for two years. 'If you break it down into quarters, I have eight quarters to fulfil my responsibility at the agency. 'Today, the beginning is my 'Alif', and what I will do throughout these eight quarters is my 'Lam', and where I will go after that is my 'Mim',' he said, referring to the Quran verse 'Alif Lam Mim'. Before clocking in, Comm Mohd Shuhaily said he met Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman. 'He gave several mandates to fulfil, including settling several administrative issues as soon as possible,' he said. Comm Mohd Shuhaily also saluted journalists who supported him all these years. 'Even though I have been transferred to a new department, they still show their loyalty. Earlier, Comm Mohd Shuhaily officially clocked in as the new AKPS director-general. He was welcomed by AKPS' top leadership, including deputy director-general Ismail Mokhtar. Comm Mohd Shuhaily, who is the former Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, arrived at the agency's headquarters at about 9.15am yesterday. He later chaired a meeting with AKPS' top leadership and was briefed on issues concerning the agency. His appointment is from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar expressed confidence that Comm Mohd Shuhaily, 53, who has 28 years of experience in the police force, would be able to lead AKPS with distinction. 'This confidence is based on Comm Mohd Shuhaily's competence and extensive experience in various units in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), both at the national and international levels. 'His leadership is also expected to further strengthen the country's border security and uphold a culture of integrity in line with the Madani values,' he added. Comm Mohd Shuhaily graduated with a Bachelor of International Relations from the International Islamic University Malaysia and has a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He previously served in Washington, United States, as a police attaché from 2010 to 2013. He was appointed as Bukit Aman CID director on Aug 15, 2023.
