New border agency boss hopes to make impact within a year
'We want to ensure the agency is visible and has an impact on society within a year,' he told reporters after clocking in at the agency's headquarters yesterday.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily said his contract was for two years.
'If you break it down into quarters, I have eight quarters to fulfil my responsibility at the agency.
'Today, the beginning is my 'Alif', and what I will do throughout these eight quarters is my 'Lam', and where I will go after that is my 'Mim',' he said, referring to the Quran verse 'Alif Lam Mim'.
Before clocking in, Comm Mohd Shuhaily said he met Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman.
'He gave several mandates to fulfil, including settling several administrative issues as soon as possible,' he said.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily also saluted journalists who supported him all these years.
'Even though I have been transferred to a new department, they still show their loyalty.

'For that, I am truly grateful,' he said.
Earlier, Comm Mohd Shuhaily officially clocked in as the new AKPS director-general.
He was welcomed by AKPS' top leadership, including deputy director-general Ismail Mokhtar.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily, who is the former Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, arrived at the agency's headquarters at about 9.15am yesterday.
He later chaired a meeting with AKPS' top leadership and was briefed on issues concerning the agency.
His appointment is from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar expressed confidence that Comm Mohd Shuhaily, 53, who has 28 years of experience in the police force, would be able to lead AKPS with distinction.
'This confidence is based on Comm Mohd Shuhaily's competence and extensive experience in various units in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), both at the national and international levels.
'His leadership is also expected to further strengthen the country's border security and uphold a culture of integrity in line with the Madani values,' he added.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily graduated with a Bachelor of International Relations from the International Islamic University Malaysia and has a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
He previously served in Washington, United States, as a police attaché from 2010 to 2013. He was appointed as Bukit Aman CID director on Aug 15, 2023.

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (July 2) had discussed the issue of the appointment of the new chief justice following the retirement of Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat yesterday (July 1). In this case (extension of service of Chief Justice Tun Maimun), I was criticised," Anwar said then. He also said he does not interfere in judicial matters, including the appointment of judges or court decisions.

Home ministry to table peaceful assembly amendment in next Dewan sitting
Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Malaysians had become more mature in peacefully and responsibly exercising their right to assemble. PETALING JAYA : The home ministry will table an amendment to Section 11 of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012 in the next Parliament sitting, says minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Section 11 of the PAA requires organisers of assemblies to obtain the consent of the location's owner or occupier. 'The government will always uphold the democratic principles and the constitutional rights of the people by ensuring they are able to assemble peacefully,' he said. In a statement today, Saifuddin said his ministry would also examine the Federal Court's ruling today that deemed it unconstitutional to criminalise the failure to notify the police five days in advance of holding a peaceful assembly. Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said Section 9(5) of the PAA was 'a disproportionate intervention' and amounted to a prohibition rather than a restriction of that right. Saifuddin said his ministry would consider proposals to amend the provision so that it would be in line with the constitution. He also noted that over 10,000 rallies had been held since 2023 with no restrictions placed on 98% of them. He said this number rose to 99% out of 7,000 rallies in 2024, showing Malaysians' maturity in peacefully and responsibly exercising their right to assemble. Saifuddin went on to say that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had enforced a moratorium on any legal proceedings under Section 9(5) of the PAA as part of his agenda to reform the law. The section imposes a punishment that exceeds the limits permitted under Article 10(1)(b) of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees the freedom of speech, assembly, and association.
