The court said it could not 'shut its eyes to the request of such a bright kid who is seeking the help of his father to get admission to higher studies after arranging fees'
The Kerala High Court has allowed a convict, sentenced to life imprisonment for patricide, a seven-day parole to assist his child in securing admission to Class 11, highlighting the importance of a father's role in a child's education.
The order was issued on June 10 by Justice P V Kunhikrishnan. The mother of the child had approached the prison authorities to secure the parole. However, it was denied citing lack of provisions. Following this, she approached the high court.
The child had scored an outstanding six A+ and two A grades in the SSLC examination. The court directed that the mark list be produced and observed that it could not 'shut its eyes to the request of such a bright kid who is seeking the help of his father to get admission to higher studies after arranging fees and other things".
'The basic rights of the convict include the right of a father to ensure good education for his child," the court said. 'A father's presence plays a vital role in a child's higher education journey by offering emotional support, guidance and mentorship."
Justice Kunhikrishnan noted that while convicts lose certain rights during imprisonment, their children should not be deprived of parental support during crucial educational transitions.
'The basic rights of the convict include the right of a father to get good education to his child. A father's presence plays a vital role in child's higher education journey by offering emotional support, guidance and mentorship. It's true that when a convict is in jail, he will lose some of his rights. But, the child of the convict should get the presence of his father for few days for a successful education year," said the order.
On this observation, the court granted the prisoner seven days of emergency leave for a period of one week from June 12 to June 18 to assist in arranging the child's admission and related formalities.
The convict will execute a bond for Rs 1 lakh with two solvent sureties each for the like sum and he shall return back to the Central Prison and Correctional Home, Thavanur at 4pm on June 18, the court ordered.
The prisoner was awarded life imprisonment by a Palakkad court in 2023 for murdering his father in 2018 following a scuffle related to family property.

High court rejects pre-arrest protection of gangster Suresh Pujari associates in 2021 BJP Neta extortion case

The Bombay High Court has revoked pre-arrest protection for three associates of gangster Suresh Pujari in connection with a 2021 extortion case. BJP leader Amit Wadhwa was threatened by Pujari over a Rs 1 crore ransom after the associates failed to repay a Rs 2 crore loan. ULHASNAGAR: In the case of gangster Suresh Pujari threatening BJP leader Amit Wadhwa with an extortion demand of Rs 1 crore in 2021, the High Court rejected the pre-arrest protection given to three associates of Pujari. The High Court stated that police interrogation of Sushil Udasi, Pankaj Tilokani, and Umesh Rajpal is required. Four people took a loan of over Rs 2 crore from Wadhwa, who is the Chairman of Kalpataru Cooperative Credit Society. However, the money was not returned. When Wadhwa asked for the loan money back from the accused, they got Suresh Pujari to call Wadhwa. Wadhwa was threatened on the phone, being told not to ask for money from the four and to pay an additional ransom of Rs 1 crore to save his life. The incident dates back to 2021 when Wadhwa lodged a complaint at the local Ulhasnagar police station and presented the phone call records to the police. In these records, Suresh Pujari, on behalf of the four other accused—Sushil Udasi, Pankaj Tilokani, Umesh Rajpal, and Roshan Mahesh Makhija—threatened Wadhwa, demanded Rs 1 crore, and asked him to waive off the loan taken by these four and give them a no-dues certificate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lợi ích khi giao dịch CFD Bitcoin IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Based on this call record, the police registered a case of extortion against the four, besides Pujari, and handed over the investigation to the Central Crime Unit of the Crime Branch. During that time, many businessmen in Ulhasnagar city were threatened by don Suresh Pujari for money. A cable operator was also killed, and there was a shooting outside a builder's office. In such a situation, considering the seriousness of the case, the Central Crime Unit started searching for the four accused, all of whom absconded. Makhija later got bail from the sessions court, while the remaining three accused received pre-arrest protection from the High Court. Wadhwa filed a petition in the court against the pre-arrest protection given to the four accused by the High Court. During the hearing on Wadhwa's plea this week, High Court Judge Nitin Sambre stated that the transcript produced by the complainant on record sufficiently justifies the allegations against the accused, which, in his opinion, warrant custodial interrogation. Therefore, the pre-arrest protection given to them is rejected. However, the judge's order provides them with four weeks of temporary protection before arrest. After the High Court order, Wadhwa said the arrest of the three accused will help the police crack the trio's nexus with gangster Suresh Pujari, who he suspects provided information about many other businessmen from the city to Pujari for ransom.

LoP V D Satheesan seeks vigilance probe into corruption in Kerala Digital University

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan wrote a letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday, urging the immediate formation of a special vigilance team to investigate serious allegations of corruption, financial fraud, and irregularities at Kerala Digital University. In the letter, Satheesan raised grave concerns over the functioning of the university, particularly pointing to the role of India Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre—a private company that partnered in the graphene project, which the chief minister had publicly championed. He alleged that the company began operations only after the government order on the project was issued but received advance funds even before completing necessary official procedures. 'It is deeply shameful for the state that such blatant corruption has occurred in a project of this scale,' Satheesan wrote. He claimed that various projects meant for the university are being hijacked by private interests using shell companies floated by faculty members. 'Reports suggest that some teachers have formed more than five companies to swindle project funds and are using university-paid staff to run these firms,' he alleged. The opposition leader further stated that in addition to Rs 94.85 crore granted by the Union Ministry of Electronics, the state government has also committed significant funds to the graphene initiative. He said this makes the alleged misuse even more serious. Satheesan also flagged concerns over the misuse of infrastructure, alleging that a building leased by the university for the proposed Digital Science Park—built at a cost of crores—was being used to house employees of private firms. 'These corrupt and misguided moves are unfolding right under the Chief Minister's leadership,' he said in the letter.

ED attaches Rs 762.47 crore immovable assets in money laundering case

New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached immovable properties valued at Rs 762.47 crore in connection with Rs 48,000 crore ponzi scheme case involving PACL Ltd, its directors, promoters, and associated entities, the agency said on Saturday. The properties, spread across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra, and even Australia, have been seized under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, said the ED in a statement. ED's Delhi zonal office took the action based on its investigation initiated following First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation under Sections 120-B and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), against PACL Ltd., PGF Limited, Late Nirmal Singh Bhangoo, and others. ED further said that the case pertains to large-scale fraudulent collective investment schemes by PACL that were structured to deceive and defraud investors. 'Through these deceptive schemes, the PACL, through its directors and others, collected and misappropriated around Rs 48,000 crore from unsuspecting investors, which is nothing but Proceeds Of Crime (POC),' said the federal agency. ED investigation revealed that the 'funds fraudulently collected from lakhs of gullible investors were systematically diverted and layered through multiple transactions to conceal their illicit origins. 'These tainted funds were ultimately utilized to acquire 68 immovable properties having current market value of Rs 762.47 crore (approximately) in the names of Late Nirmal Singh Bhangoo (one of the promoters of PACL), his family members, and entities related to PACL' said the ED. As per the ED, this was deliberately done to disguise the true nature of these assets and project them as legitimate properties, thereby attempting to mask the POC as lawful assets. (ANI)
