Analyst suggests the Minnesota Vikings add a veteran backup at a key position
Minnesota signed Isaiah Rodgers in free agency, but he has only had 13 starts since 2020. On the other side, former top-three pick Jeff Okudah is looking to battle with third-year cornerback Mekhi Blackmon, who is coming off an ACL tear.
The coaching staff has expressed their optimism in the room, but what if injuries strike again? Even if these players were to all pan out, there isn't much proven depth behind them. Matt Holder of Bleacher Report believes that the Vikings should swing a trade for a veteran before the season kicks off.
With Byron Murphy Jr. covering the slot in nickel personnel, the Vikings are expected to start Isaiah Rodgers and Jeff Okudah at the two cornerback spots on the boundary. Rodgers and Okudah were backups for the Eagles and Texans, respectively, a year ago, so it couldn't hurt to add another veteran into the mix.
Rodgers will be counted on to start. Okudah's spot on the roster, let alone the starting lineup, isn't a guarantee. But there are also free agent options, such as Rasul Douglas and Stephon Gilmore, who started 15 games for the Vikings last season.
Perhaps the Vikings are waiting to see how their current room plays out before contacting Gilmore, who will turn 35 in September. Minnesota didn't sign him until mid-August the previous season, but his familiarity with Brian Flores' system helped facilitate his transition. Maybe we see the same scenario play out this year.

Who's Justin Fields' backup QB on the Jets? What's next if he's injured
The New York Jets are a maelstrom of bad luck and bad decisions. On Thursday, a dose of the former took root to wipe out one of the team's smarter bets, at least temporarily. New York signed Justin Fields to be the team's starting quarterback, snuffing out the disastrous Aaron Rodgers era after last season's 5-12 campaign. Fields was only a part time starter for the offense-needy Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, but played the most efficient football of his life over six starts and 10 games. He set career highs in passer rating (93.3), completion percentage over expected (1.5) and expected points added (EPA) per dropback (-0.01) while maximizing a playbook that dialed back his deep throws in exchange for shorter, safer passes and designed runs. That provided hope he could continue rebuilding his value as a Jet. However, he may not get that chance. Fields was carted off the practice field Thursday due to injury, casting doubt over his availability going forward. If he's out for an extended period, Tyrod Taylor will likely step into the Jets' QB1 role. Taylor is a former Pro Bowl quarterback, though that speaks more to the desperation of the exhibition to convince passers to show up than anything else (Mac Jones, for example, is a former Pro Bowl quarterback). Taylor turns 36 years old on August 3. He's started only five games the last three seasons while providing roughly average quarterbacking. If he can't go, the rest of the New York quarterback depth chart includes former Nebraska and Kansas State star Adrian Martinez -- who was undrafted in 2023 and has yet to play a regular season NFL snap -- and 2025 undrafted free agent Brady Cook. Should the Jets have to turn to free agency to backfill their quarterback position, the pickings are similarly slim. The best available options include C.J. Beathard, Tyler Huntley and, if they can lure him away from coaching high school, Teddy Bridgewater. Atlanta Falcons backup Kirk Cousins may be available via trade, though that will depend on how much of his guaranteed salary New York is willing to absorb.

Packers Must Consider Late Push for 5-Time Pro Bowler
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers have started off the 2025 NFL season. With training camp underway, the pursuit of a Super Bowl run has begun. Over the last two years since Jordan Love took over as the team's starting quarterback, the Packers have made the playoffs in both seasons. However, they have been unable to make enough plays to get to the NFC Championship Game. Looking at the roster, Green Bay should be a contender once again this season. A lot of their success or lack thereof will depend on the growth and development of Love. Head coach Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers looks on prior to the game against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field on September 18, 2022 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Photo byWhile Love needs to take a step forward, there are two question marks on the defensive side of the football that could become a concern during the season. Read more: Steelers' TJ Watt Doesn't Hold Back About 2025 NFL Season One of those concerns comes at the cornerback position. Following Jaire Alexander's departure, the Packers could use more help in the secondary. The other is pass rushing, which Green Bay chose not to address with a veteran and instead brought in two rookie options. At cornerback, the Packers have made the move to transition Bo Melton from wide receiver to cornerback. That could pay off, but it would be very risky to expect him to play a key role in his first year as a defensive back. Keeping that in mind, Green Bay should strongly consider pursuing five-time Pro Bowl free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore still being available in free agency this late is a major surprise. He has been a longtime star in the NFL, but has yet to be signed. The Packers should bring him onboard. Last season with the NFC North division rival Minnesota Vikings, Gilmore was a big part of Brian Flores' defense. He played in 15 games, racking up 56 total tackles to go along with an interception and nine defended passes. Read more: Lions' Dan Campbell Gets Honest About Aidan Hutchinson Heading into the 2025 campaign, Gilmore is 34 years old and will turn 35 on September 19. He may not be the superstar that he once was, but he's still more than capable of being an impact player. Green Bay needs more help and consistency at the cornerback position. Gilmore could bring just that and his game is a good fit within second-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley's defensive system. It's possible that the Packers are comfortable with their current situation in the secondary. But, if general manager Brian Gutekunst is open to making a move, he should look no further than Gilmore. Why Budda Baker is excited despite Cardinals' struggles
The post Why Budda Baker is excited despite Cardinals' struggles appeared first on ClutchPoints. Budda Baker is bringing optimism for the 2025 NFL season despite past struggles for the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona hasn't returned to the playoffs from the NFC bracket since the 2021 campaign. Their three consecutive seasons of not playing postseason football gives motivation for the current squad to prove doubters wrong, especially for Baker. 'I was drafted here, I know it was a different GM and a different coaching staff, but for me all I've been trying to do is do my job at a high level each and every day,' Baker said on The Mina Kimes Show this week. 'Of course, I'm a sore loser, I hate losing, and my career with the Cardinals has kind of been more losing than winning. 'But for me it's just stay ten toes down, you believe in what you believe in, and I believe in this coaching staff, I believe in these players that we brought in, free agency, draft, and very excited for the future.' What's next for Budda Baker, Cardinals It's a strong statement for Budda Baker to make about the Cardinals going into the 2025 season. Baker proves that he is capable of helping Arizona be a threat with his talent. He played for the entire 2024 campaign as he made 164 tackles, five pass deflections, two sacks, and a forced fumble. His efforts helped him make the most tackles of any season throughout his career. He earned his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl selection while landing on the NFL's All-Pro second team. The Cardinals finished 2024 with an 8-9 record. It was a significant improvement from the back-to-back 4-13 records they had in 2022 and 2023, but it wasn't enough to make the playoffs. They finished third in the NFC West Division standings behind the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. Arizona will hope to make that jump with quarterback Kyler Murray gaining more chemistry with James Connor, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride. Hopefully with Baker's optimism, they can do just that.
