Inclusive prosperity promotion: Minister calls for Pakistan-ASEAN technology alliance
The minister expressed these views while addressing the ASEAN-Pakistan Technology Expo 2025 as the chief guest at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad on Monday.
The minister said that our vision is to make Pakistan a knowledge economy that empowers the youth, strengthens its industries and plays a meaningful role in regional cooperation.
The two-day event brought together distinguished delegates from ASEAN member states, academia, industry leaders, and students to foster collaboration in science, technology, and innovation.
The minister underscored the significance of the Expo as a symbol of shared commitment between Pakistan and ASEAN nations to harness the transformative power of technology.
He emphasised the dual nature of technological change, which offers immense promise but also presents serious challenges. From artificial intelligence to clean energy, Iqbal noted that disruptive innovations are reshaping global economies and societies, and highlighted the risks posed by the growing technology gap, digital divide, and skills mismatch in developing regions.
Iqbal outlined the common challenges faced by Pakistan and ASEAN countries, including climate change, youth unemployment, and uneven digital infrastructure, while also pointing to shared strengths such as a young and tech-savvy population, robust universities, and a growing appetite for innovation. He stated that this synergy forms the foundation for deeper cooperation in science and technology.
Reaffirming Pakistan's strong commitment to its partnership with ASEAN, Iqbal proposed a forward-looking vision for ASEAN-Pakistan technology collaboration. He outlined three strategic pillars to drive this agenda: fostering knowledge and talent exchange through academic partnerships and innovation fellowships; building joint research and development platforms in emerging fields; and ensuring that technology contributes to sustainable and inclusive development, particularly in areas such as climate resilience, health, and education.
The minister also highlighted recent milestones in Pakistan's journey toward a knowledge-based economy.
These include the launch of the National AI Policy, the creation of Special Technology Zones to attract global investment, the digitisation of governance through the E-Pakistan initiative, and the strengthening of institutions such as NUST and Ignite to support startups and applied research.
He emphasised that the future must be built through cooperation, innovation, and shared vision.
Commending NUST for its leadership in technology education and research, he called upon the youth to develop technologies that serve not just markets, but the greater public good. The minister expressed hope that the ASEAN-Pakistan Technology Expo would mark the beginning of a new era of collaboration, shaping a smarter, greener, and more inclusive future for the region.
In his concluding remarks, Iqbal issued a compelling call to action, urging all stakeholders to reimagine ASEAN-Pakistan relations not merely through the traditional lenses of trade and diplomacy, but as a dynamic technology alliance for inclusive and sustainable prosperity. He also proposed the following action steps for consideration at EXPO 2025:
Establish an ASEAN-Pakistan Technology Cooperation Forum that convenes annually to identify joint initiatives, exchange innovative ideas, and evaluate collaborative progress.
Launch an ASEAN-Pakistan Startup Bridge aimed at connecting incubators, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs across the region to foster a vibrant cross-border innovation ecosystem.
Promote the development of regional standards and interoperability in digital technologies to enable efficient, seamless collaboration and integration among member states.
Encourage the co-hosting of technology expos, hackathons, and innovation challenges that actively crowdsource solutions to shared developmental challenges and stimulate youth-led innovation.
Institutionalise a structured digital dialogue bringing together policymakers, academia, industry leaders, and young innovators to ensure that technology policies remain inclusive, future-oriented, and people-centered.
In his welcome remarks, Umar Khan, Project Director of the National Centre of Robotics and Automation (NCRA) at NUST, acknowledged the pivotal role of Ahsan Iqbal in establishing key national research centers. He highlighted that the NCRA, along with the National Centre of Artificial Intelligence, National Centre of Big Data and Cloud Computing, National Centre of Cyber Security, and the National Centre of GIS and Space Applications, were all launched in 2017-2018 as part of the minister's vision to propel Pakistan into a technology-driven future. He noted that Iqbal's unwavering dedication has transformed these initiatives into thriving ecosystems of innovation, commercialisation, and national impact.

FBR reforms: PM calls for launching digital invoicing system in Urdu
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that the digital invoicing system must be launched in Urdu to ensure inclusivity and accessibility. A weekly review meeting on FBR's digitization, implementation of an AI-based system, and other reforms was held today in Islamabad under the chairmanship of PM Shehbaz, said a press release by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The meeting was briefed on progress regarding digital invoicing, e-Bilty (electronic freight documentation), simplification of tax returns, AI-based assessment system, establishment of a central Command and Control Center, and cargo tracking system. PM Shehbaz orders crackdown on tax evasion, under-invoicing The PM welcomed the introduction of simplified tax return forms in Urdu and directed the establishment of a helpline to assist citizens in filing their returns. 'Tax reforms must focus on easing the burden for the common man,' the PMO quoted the prime minister as saying. The PM also called for third-party validation of all FBR reforms to ensure full transparency. Officials briefed the meeting that the new digital tax returns, connected to a central database, were made simpler and more accessible. The salaried class stands to benefit the most, with the new return forms going live from July 15 for salaried individuals, and from July 30 for other taxpayers, the meeting was informed. Urdu-language returns for salaried taxpayers will also be available by the end of the month. The premier ordered a nationwide awareness campaign to educate citizens on how to use the new system.

PSX crosses 135,000-point mark for first time as week kicks off with gains

The index gained 1066.42 points, reflecting a 0.79% increase. At the time of reporting, the current index stood at 135,366.18 points during intra-day trading. This marked another strong performance for the market, with the day's high hitting 135,521.84, while the low settled at 134,937.43. The market saw a robust trading volume of 71.9 million shares, indicating a high level of investor participation. The total market value reached an impressive Rs6.33 billion, up from the previous close of 134,299.76. Earlier in the week, the KSE-100 index of the PSX surged 2,351 points, or +2% week-on-week (WoW), to close at 134,300, marking a second week of gains driven by a strong earnings outlook, record remittances and positive macro news. Major boosts came from a US-Pakistan trade deal, $2 billion investment from Azerbaijan and rising Panda bond expectations. The State Bank's foreign currency reserves hit a 39-month high of $14.5 billion. Among FY25 highlights were remittances hitting $38.3 billion (+27%), auto sales higher by 43% and early retiring of Rs1.5 trillion worth of debt. Analysts see continued momentum with room for profit-taking. The index trades at a 6.8x forward price-to-earnings ratio, offering a 7.4% dividend yield. Top picks include OGDC, Pakistan Petroleum, Meezan Bank, MCB Bank, PSO, Hubco and Systems Limited.

JUI-F jirga also rejects committee on ex-Fata
Listen to article A tribal jirga organized by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has expressed serious reservations about a committee formed to restore the traditional jirga system in the merged tribal districts, which were earlier part of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) The jirga held in Peshawar on Sunday also declared that a decision taken with regard to the merged districts without proper public representation and consultation would be unacceptable. The jirga led by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman brought together tribal elders and leaders from the merged districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). Senior leaders like Maulana Jamaluddin, Maulana Abdul Rasheed, Malik Nasrullah Khan, Malik Shaheen, Malik Khan Marjan, Mufti Baitullah, Malik Nadir Manan, Abdul Khaliq Pathan, MNA Mufti Misbahuddin, Malik Shireen, and Dr GG Jamal addressed the gathering and presented key recommendations. In a statement issued by the JUI-F, the jirga expressed concern about the rising incidents of terrorism and targeted killings in the former tribal districts, and demanded urgent and effective measures to ensure peace and protect lives and property in the region. The jirga also rejected the recently proposed Mines and Minerals Bill, terming it against the interests of the tribal population and the country at large. It emphasized the need to re-engage tribal leaders and Pashtun representatives to devise a comprehensive and inclusive strategy for the region's future. The participants reiterated that no imposed solution would be acceptable in the tribal belt without the voice and will of the people Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a special committee on the merged districts which on July 1 initiated deliberations on revival of the traditional jirga system in former Fata. These districts, earlier called agencies, were merged with the K-P in early 2018 through the 25th Constitutional Amendment. During the July 1 meeting, Minister for States and Frontier Regions Amir Muqam as the chairman of the committee stressed the need for an alternative justice system rooted in tribal customs but aligned with constitutional principles. The committee also decided to form a sub-committee to draft recommendations and agreed to hold its next session in the K-P's capital, Peshawar. The ANP and the PTI have already rejected the committee, which, they claim, does not represent the people of the merged districts.
