SHANGHAI, CHINA - Media OutReach Newswire - 13 June 2025 - The second season of Our Water: Flowing from Shanghai – Intercultural Dialogues Among World Cities officially launched on June 10 along the Thames River in London, ushering in a new chapter of collaboration between Shanghai and London focused on waterfront development, cultural exchange, and sustainable urban growth. More than 140 participants from both countries attended, including leaders in finance, urban planning and the creative industries.Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu River met the Thames, with water serving as a shared symbol of culture and urban identity, as the Shanghai-London Twin Cities Dialogue gathered momentumWang Qi, Minister at the Chinese Embassy in the UK, noted in his remarks that both Shanghai and London have flourished thanks to their rivers, prospered as port cities, and continue to be revitalized by culture and innovation. "Today's event is not only an exchange between two cities, but also a meaningful cultural interaction and a collective step towards a better future," he said.During the event, representatives from London, Liverpool, and Shanghai jointly launched the World-class Waterfront Development Initiative, aiming to drive the comprehensive transformation of urban waterfronts worldwide—from spatial regeneration to the integration of ecology, economy, and culture. The initiative aspires to establish global demonstration zones and pioneering models of waterfront development aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.Julia King, Co-founder of Social Place and former Researcher at the Cities Research Centre at the London School of Economics, shared her perspective: "I think China broadly has done a lot more interesting projects around nature-based solutions for rivers in general. And I think the approach that Shanghai is taking to its river, to its principal attributes is something that I think we could probably learn a lot from and then have an exchange as to kind of around public realm."Michael Clifford, Economic Advisor at EY-Parthenon, added: "I think there's already a good foundation of working collaboration between London and Shanghai. London has a real focus on investable propositions and opportunities and particularly in the development space, a whole set of kind of development opportunities around and alongside the river."Our Water Season 2 will launch a six-day program in London featuring six flagship events focused on cultural dialogue, historical and environmental renewal, Sino-British numismatic heritage, multimedia art, culinary exchange, and global innovation collaboration. Later this year, the season will return to Shanghai, where activities like the Shanghai–London "Poetry in Twin Cities Metro" campaign will be officially unveiled.Hashtag: #ShanghaiEye

Gold rebounds from over one-month low on weaker dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: Gold reversed course and edged higher on Monday, supported by a weaker dollar, after hitting a more than one-month low earlier as easing US-China trade tensions dampened safe-haven demand and bolstered risk appetite. Spot gold rose 0.30 per cent to US$3,281.65 per ounce, as of 0216 GMT, after hitting its lowest since May 29 earlier in the session. US gold futures were up 0.20 per cent at US$3,293.30. "There is less of a 'doom and gloom' outlook surrounding both tariff talks and events in the Middle East, which is relegating gold to play second fiddle to risk assets," KCM Trade Chief Market Analyst Tim Waterer said. Asian shares firmed, with Wall Street futures advancing, while the US dollar index fell 0.20 per cent. A lower dollar makes greenback-priced bullion less expensive. The US and China have resolved issues surrounding shipments of rare earth minerals and magnets to the United States, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday, adding that the Trump administration's various trade deals with other countries could be done by the September 1 Labor Day holiday. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump abruptly cut off trade talks with Canada on Friday over its tax targeting US technology firms, saying that it was a "blatant attack" and he would set a new tariff rate on Canadian goods within a week. The Iran-Israel ceasefire after a 12-day conflict also appeared to be holding, further reducing safe-haven demand. "The dollar remains pressured which is limiting the extent of the slide for gold. However, the US$3,250 level shapes as a key support level for gold. Any breach of this level could see losses accelerate towards the US$3,200 level," Waterer said. Stable geopolitical and economic conditions often reduce demand for gold as a safe-haven asset, while non-yielding bullion's appeal further wanes in a high-interest-rate environment. Spot silver was down 0.10 per cent at US$36.02 per ounce, platinum firmed one per cent to US$1,353.13, while palladium was up 0.20 per cent at US$1,135.48.

China lifts ban on Japanese seafood imports, but Fukushima and Tokyo still excluded

BEIJING, June 30 — China has lifted a ban on seafood imports from most regions of Japan, partially mending a years-long dispute over Tokyo's handling of nuclear wastewater. Japan began gradually releasing treated wastewater from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean in 2023. The move was backed by the International Atomic Energy Agency but drew sharp criticism from Beijing, which banned imports of Japanese seafood as a result. Samples from long-term monitoring of nuclear-contaminated water from Fukushima had 'not shown abnormalities', China's General Administration of Customs said in a statement Sunday. As a result, China 'decided to conditionally resume' seafood imports from Japan, with the exception of imports from 10 of the country's 47 prefectures, including Fukushima and Tokyo, which remain banned. In 2011, a huge earthquake triggered a deadly tsunami that swamped the Fukushima nuclear facility and pushed three of its six reactors into meltdown. China, whose ties with Japan have long been strained by Tokyo's imperial legacy, vociferously opposed the release of the treated wastewater, casting it as environmentally irresponsible. Production companies that had suspended imports must reapply for registration in China and would be 'strictly' supervised, Beijing's customs administration said Sunday. — AFP
