New York man's body found after going missing in Maryland reservoir
After a massive search and rescue mission, 20-year-old Scott Veras' body was found after going underwater in Liberty Reservoir, a 704 ft reservoir West of Baltimore, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office announced.
Swimming with friends
According to police, Veras, from Queens, New York, was visiting friends in Pikesville, Maryland, when the incident occurred.
"He and three friends were swimming, they went down and jumped in the water. They swam across to an island, and about halfway across, this gentleman, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, he started to go underwater," said Lt. Brandon Holland with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. "He was last seen about halfway across."
Lt. Holland told WJZ the reservoir is a popular swimming spot for teens and young adults despite the fact that it is illegal. "It can go from three feet deep to about 70 feet deep...So, it is not safe, and again, it is illegal."
"No Swimming" warning signs are posted around the reservoir due to very rapid drop-offs, currents, and hidden rocks and branches, according to Baltimore City Public Works.
Also, the temperature drastically dips within the reservoir's deep waters, which can lead to hypothermia.
Massive search and rescue operation
The extensive, coordinated search for Veras began on July 3, the night of the incident, according to police.
However, search and rescue operations proceeded on July 4, both in the water and along the shoreline, with a massive number of agencies responding to assist, including:

No foul play suspected
Smith's family, who was provided lodging nearby after traveling from Queens, New York, was notified of the outcome.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Smith Veras during this tragic time," the Carroll County Sheriff's Office wrote in a statement released on Facebook.
Officers do not suspect foul play as the incident remains under investigation.

Both were confirmed dead at the scene. Less than 24 hours later, at 12.53pm on Thursday, the body of a woman in her 60s was discovered below the same cliffs. Emergency services, including mountain rescue and lifeboat crews, recovered her body during high tide. Her death is also being treated as non-suspicious. Her family has been informed. On Saturday morning, a fourth body - a woman in her 50s from the local area - was found beneath the cliffs at Sandsend. She was recovered by emergency teams just before 1pm. Her death, like the others, is not being treated as suspicious. Three More Workers Found Dead in Collapsed Chilean Mine
Rescuers have discovered the bodies of three more missing miners in Chile, where part of a large copper mine collapsed after an earthquake last week. The National Copper Corporation of Chile, known as Codelco, identified one of the dead as Gonzalo Núñez Caroca in a statement early Sunday. It said the identities of the other two miners would be confirmed later. Rescuers were continuing to search for two more missing workers whom they believed were still trapped in El Teniente mine, a massive complex in the Andes Mountains, the company said in a statement. 'We share the anguish this situation causes their families and the entire community,' Codelco said. A fourth man, identified by authorities as Paulo Marín Tapia, was found dead on Thursday. Codelco said Mr. Tapia had been working on the Andesita project, an effort to expand the El Teniente mine. Since Thursday, rescuers have been frantically trying to locate the miners, who were trapped by 65 feet of debris when part of the mine collapsed. Codelco said the accident was caused by a 'seismic event.' A magnitude 5 earthquake was detected by the U.S. Geological Survey on Thursday near Machalí, where the mine is located. At a news conference on Friday morning, the general manager of the mine said 100 rescue workers were involved in the operation, some of whom had also worked to help free 33 miners who were trapped for weeks in a mine in the Atacama Desert in 2010. Rescue efforts since the collapse had been hampered by repeated aftershocks, Codelco officials said. The mine shut down immediately after the collapse, which injured nine other workers.
