A New York man who went missing on Thursday, July 3, while swimming with friends in a Maryland reservoir was recovered on Saturday afternoon. "It can go from three feet deep to about 70 feet it is not safe, and again, it is illegal." "No Swimming" warning signs are posted around the reservoir due to very rapid drop-offs, currents, and hidden rocks and branches, according to Baltimore City Public Works. New York man missing after swimming in Maryland reservoir, officials say
A New York man is reportedly missing after he went swimming in a Maryland reservoir, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. The search continued Friday evening for the young man who disappeared in Liberty Reservoir while swimming with friends on Thursday, July 3. "It's heartbreaking," said kayaker Rich Fairhurst. "We heard about it this morning, and we weren't sure if the lake was going to be open, but we came anyway. And we saw the search and rescue team starting back up today." Search for missing swimmer Crews from multiple agencies were out until dark on Thursday night, searching for the man after his friends called for help. "He and three friends were swimming, they went down and jumped in the water. They swam across to an island, and about halfway across, this gentleman, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, he started to go underwater," said Lt. Brandon Holland with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. "He was last seen about halfway across." Lt. Holland said the man is from Queens, New York, but was visiting friends in Pikesville, Maryland, when the incident occurred. According to Lt. Holland, crews are likely looking at a recovery mission. "It is popular for teens and young adults to come down here and want to swim, but it is illegal. It can go from three feet deep to about 70 feet deep is where we think he was last seen," Lt. Holland said. "So, it is not safe, and again, it is illegal." Carroll County deputies said the young man's three friends have been cooperative in the investigation. No charges or citations have been filed. Water safety reminder The incident serves as a reminder to obey signs when visiting bodies of water, especially during the summer, and to be careful, stay sober and wear a life vest when on the water. "We usually wear life vests, and we have a whistle on," said boater Willow Timko. "There is always a big possibility that it might not happen, but there's a small possibility that something bad could happen."

Baltimore County gym teacher accused of inappropriately touching students
A 28-year-old Baltimore County gym teacher is facing charges for allegedly inappropriately touching students, according to police. Jordan Adams, a teacher at Northwest Academy in Pikesville, has been charged with multiple counts of second-degree assault. He is being held in the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond. Police said the allegations happened at the school. Investigators are asking family members of students to contact the police department at 410-887-7720 if they have additional information regarding Adams or believe their child may also be a victim. More gym teachers are accused of sexual assault Two other school gym teachers were arrested within the past couple of weeks on charges of sex crimes against students. Police said 40-year-old Sean Brooks,, a gym teacher at Perry Hall High School, allegedly sexually assaulted a student on school property. According to the school, Brooks has worked at Perry Hall High School since 2017. School leaders said he is on administrative leave and is barred from Baltimore County Public Schools property. "Ensuring a safe learning environment for our students is our top priority," Perry Hall Principal Abbey Campbell said in a letter to families. On June 2, Baltimore County police said a middle school physical education teacher was arrested on charges of sexually abusing children. Roger Myers, 61, allegedly abused the students at Deep Creek Middle School in Essex. The school said Myers was placed on administrative leave in January. "These charges are deeply troubling," Deep Creek Middle School principal Laura Kelly said in a letter to families. "BCPS holds its employees to a high standard of character, and this alleged behavior is abhorrent and completely unacceptable." Myers has been employed with the Baltimore County Public Schools since 1996 and has been employed at Deep Creek Middle School since July 2024. Anne Arundel teacher acquitted of charges On Tuesday, June 17, Matthew Schlegel, a suspended elementary school teacher in Anne Arundel County, was cleared of sexual abuse allegations. Schlegel is a third-grade math teacher at Severna Park Elementary School. According to the school district, Schlegel will return to "paid status," but officials are still determining whether he should remain employed. Five children testified during the five-week trial. Schlegel was ordered by the judge to be released from jail. Protesters rallied outside the courthouse Wednesday to oppose the not-guilty verdict and to advocate for child sex abuse survivors. The jury deliberated for three days, with jurors struggling to agree on several counts. On Monday, the jury told the judge they were deadlocked on four charges. After agreeing on one more charge, they told the judge they doubted they would come to a consensus on the others. Court officials are expected to share more information about how the three remaining charges will be handled during a status hearing on July 1.

Members of Maryland synagogue stuck in Israel as airstrikes continue
A group from a Baltimore County synagogue traveled to Israel hours before Iran airstrikes began. They remain stuck there amid ongoing tension between the countries. Nearly 50 people from Beth Tfiloh in Pikesville arrived just hours before the Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv closed down due to "a special security situation" on Friday, June 13. Maryland rabbi in Israel during airstrikes "You're asleep at 3 o'clock in the morning, and you get an alarm. Just make sure you're near a shelter. Sometimes you hear the booms going on kind of around you," said Rabbi Chai Posner of Beth Tfiloh. "But then, like you get the all clear and you go, you go out. You go back to bed, or you go back to what you were doing. And today, outside, right in the courtyard of the hotel where we're staying, right outside our door, there was a wedding going on just really just beautiful and singing and dancing, and we've been doing our best to keep our group active and having fun." Tensions began to rise after Israel launched a wave of air strikes on Iran, targeting the country's military and nuclear infrastructure to try and rid it of weapons. Iran retaliated soon after, launching back-and-forth airstrikes that continued through the weekend. Officials confirmed Monday that 14 Israelis and 224 Iranians have died. Rabbi Posner said while it's scary and nerve-wracking, it's a trip he's thankful to be on. "We could do a tour of Israel anytime, and we'll do it again another time. But this was an opportunity to be a part of something historic, amazing," Rabbi Posner said. "They took care of some evil, evil people with some dangerous weapons. Nothing else was going to make it happen." President Trump would not comment on what it would take for the US to get involved in the conflict, but says he's hoping for a deal. However, he also said if any U.S. armed forces are hit by Iran, America will retaliate with "full strength and might."
