Kaizer Chiefs cut ties with man after pre-season in Netherlands

Kaizer Chiefs have officially parted ways with strength and conditioning expert Firas Zghal following the club's recent return from their pre-season tour in the Netherlands.
The club brought in Zghal, a France-based professor and renowned sports scientist, on a short-term basis to lead the squad's physical preparations in Europe. He temporarily replaced Majdi Safi, who stayed behind in South Africa due to travel-related challenges.
While Safi continued working with the group of players who did not travel, rumours circulated linking him with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic. Despite the speculation, he remains under contract with Amakhosi.
Zghal's presence proved crucial during the European camp. His long-standing professional relationship with head coach Nasreddine Nabi, which began over a decade ago at Al Ahly Tripoli in Libya, played a key role in ensuring a smooth transition during the club's five-match friendly schedule.
'Zghal and Nabi first worked together over a decade ago at Al Ahly Tripoli in Libya.'
Zghal brings a wealth of experience, not just from the touchline, but also from the classroom. At 42, the former Stade Gabèsien and CS M'saken striker currently serves as an associate professor at Paris-Saclay University. With over 30 published research papers in exercise and performance science, Zghal has established himself as a leading figure in sports science.
Despite his value during pre-season, his contract was always meant to be temporary, and his departure follows the plan set out from the beginning of the tour. Safi is now expected to resume his role with the first team as they return to full training in Johannesburg.
The brief collaboration has offered insight into Nabi's trusted circle of professionals. Which could shape future appointments at Naturena. Chiefs now look ahead to their final preparations for the upcoming season, with the full technical team back in place.
Will Kaizer Chiefs lose Majdi Safi?

SABC to televise Orlando Pirates MTN8 match

SABC will televise the MTN8 quarter-final match between Orlando Pirates and Polokwane City on Saturday afternoon. The highly anticipated quarter-final fixture takes place at Orlando Stadium at 15:00. The two sides are not only raising the curtain to the new season, but also provide a duel that could determine where the coveted piece of silverware, which has resided in the Bucs quarters for the past three years, ends up next. Having provided a permanent home for the trophy in recent seasons, the Soweto Giants are more than determined to create even more history as the first side to lift it on four consecutive occasions. Orlando Pirates have won the competition four times in the last five editions and are favourites once again this season. The Buccaneers head into their season opener having added an ex-Rise and Shine player in Oswin Appollis among their off-season signings. The winger is joined by a few more potential Bucs debutants ahead of the clash, with the likes of Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Yanela Mbuthuma and Sihle Nduli, with the club also kicking off the new season with a new leadership structure in the form of new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and recently-appointed skipper Nkosinathi Sibisi. The Orlando Pirates pre-season preparations included a return to the Spanish coast, where they faced English outfit Bolton Wanderers and Pafos from Cyprus, along with more familiar foes in Las Palmas and Granada, who they had locked horns with in their previous trips to Malaga. These European excursions have usually been followed up by some silverware, but the Soweto Giants will know better than to rest on their laurels as they encounter a tricky proposition in the form of their quarter-final opponents. The match will kick off at 15:00, streaming live on SuperSport PSL (202) and SABC 1. Live updates will be provided across Orlando Pirates social media platforms throughout the game. MTN8 quarter-finals herald the start of the PSL's new season

Abdeslam Ouaddou steps into the hot seat at Orlando Pirates, tasked with delivering silverware in a high-pressure season. Photo: Backpageix The Premier Soccer League will launch its 2025-26 season with the annual MTN8 quarter-finals, scheduled for the weekend. This single-leg knockout tournament features the top eight teams from last season's Premiership, and fans are eagerly awaiting the intensity of the first matches that promise to set the tone for the season ahead. Orlando Pirates will kick off the MTN8 action at the iconic Orlando Stadium, hosting Polokwane City. Pirates will be looking to showcase their squad full of new talent and embark on what they hope will be a glorious season. Among the standout signings taking centre stage is the former Polokwane star, Oswin Appollis, who returns to the pitch with a point to prove. Another addition that has garnered significant attention is the skilful Pirates midfielder Sipho 'Masterchef' Mbule, known for his flair and creativity. These players could be vital for the Pirates as they aim to reclaim their MTN8 dominance. This match marks the official start of the Abdeslam Ouaddou era at Pirates, as the Moroccan coach takes the helm following the departure of José Riveiro. Following their pre-season tour of Spain, Ouaddou and his squad are set to make a strong statement, especially with Pirates being the reigning champions after clinching title victories for the past three consecutive years. Getting a fourth title in a row would send a message to the rest of the league, signalling their intent to also pursue their first league title since 2012. Following a remarkable showing at the FIFA Club World Cup, league champions Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for their first competitive match of the season. They host Richards Bay at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Sunday. Stellenbosch FC's resilience will be put to the test by AmaZulu on Sunday. The Winelands club are now confronting a new set of challenges as it navigates a wave of player departures that could have a significant impact on their campaign. In the remaining quarter-final, Sekhukhune United will begin their campaign against TS Galaxy at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. They have shown huge improvement in the Premiership, but are yet to win their first trophy.

Opinion: Why this is Nasreddine Nabi's last season at Kaizer Chiefs

Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi had high expectations during his 12 months at Kaizer Chiefs, but ultimately delivered disappointing results. The 59-year-old coach was initially sought after by Amakhosi while he was with Yanga. After parting ways with the Tanzanian club in 2023, he joined FAR Rabat in Morocco. At that time, reports indicated that Chiefs were reluctant to hire him along with his three assistants. Instead, the Glamour Boys appointed Molefi Ntseki, but his tenure lasted just four months before Cavin Johnson took over. Sadly, Johnson also struggled to move the team forward. Eventually, Kaizer Chiefs decided to approach Nabi once more, allowing him to bring his technical team this time. Nabi began the season positively, winning his first three matches across all competitions. However, despite a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign, Amakhosi were unable to maintain their momentum and finished ninth in the Betway Premiership. Their only saving grace was winning the Nedbank Cup, which marked the first trophy for the Khosination in a decade and helped secure the coach's position. With the new season starting this weekend, pressure is on the Tunisian coach. Chiefs will not participate in the MTN8 and will play their opening match next weekend against Stellenbosch. Given the team's recent performances in pre-season, it appears unlikely that they will contend for the league title. With the MTN8 out of consideration, Chiefs' realistic chances for silverware now lie in the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup. Since 2013, Nabi has never coached a team for more than two seasons. Despite his success with Yanga, he was only there for two years. After that, he joined AS FAR but lasted just a season before joining the Soweto giants. In May, there were rumours that Kaizer Chiefs might cut Nabi's stay short despite the Nedbank triumph. It appears the Tunisian was given another season to improve the team. With Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns looking sharp, it seems unlikely that Amakhosi will challenge for top honours. A bad start for Kaizer Chiefs will put pressure on the players, forcing Nabi to quit before his three-year contract expires. The only thing that can see him stay beyond this season is another cup win and top four finish. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
