HC: Where did cops get power to close 121 plaints against Ponmudy?
Madras high court
on Tuesday.
In response, advocate general P S Raman submitted that all the cases were closed after following due process by conducting a preliminary inquiry under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). It was concluded that the speech did not amount to hate speech; therefore, the complaints were closed, the AG added. The remedy available to the complainants does not end here. Under BNSS, they have an option to appeal to the inspector general and the DGP if they are not satisfied with the findings of the investigating officer, AG said.
In response to the AG's claim that the former minister was just quoting an incident that occurred 60 years ago, Justice P Velmurugan said, "Can you (TN police) say that only the original speaker can be punished and not the subsequent speaker who made the same speech?"

"They (politicians) cannot act like kings; the court cannot tolerate such behaviour. They must respect the public who are the victims," the judge said. "Let them (complainants) exhaust their remedies; meanwhile, we (court) will keep the contempt petition pending.

We will watch vigilantly," Justice Velmurugan said.
People in public life must understand that this country is for all and not for a particular class of citizens, he added. Asserting that he will keep the suo motu contempt open, Justice Velmurugan directed the state police to ensure that all the complainants are served with the closure notice. "If anyone comes to the court alleging that they have not been served with the closure notice, the court will be constrained to take serious action," the judge said and adjourned the hearing to Aug 1.

Sporadic clashes disrupt normalcy in Bengal during strike
1 2 Kolkata: Sporadic clashes between protesters and police disrupted normalcy in parts of Bengal on Wednesday as 10 central trade unions and their allies observed Bharat Bandh . Police arrested 383 bandh supporters across Bengal, including 41 from Kolkata. A clash took place between bandh supporters and police at Ganguly Bagan in Kolkata in the morning, when CPM and SFI members set a tyre on fire. The fire spread to a police guardrail, causing panic among commuters, including schoolchildren. Nineteen protesters, including SFI general secretary Srijan Bhattacharya, were arrested on the spot. At Jadavpur railway station, protesters tried to stall train movement on platform 1. There was also a scuffle between police and protesters at College Street. "The situation was under control and necessary precautions were taken to prevent any escalation," said a top officer at Lalbazar. Unemployment is raging, and farmers are unable to get a proper price for their produce. In Bengal, state govt was even more agile in opposing the bandh. Our workers were beaten up. The police force, which looks the other way when women are raped or riots take place, was active in stopping our workers protesting against anti-people laws," said CPM state secretary Md Salim.

'Unemployment got me': Ilhan Omar's daughter sells clothes on thrifting platform, says she has no money
Ilhan Omar's daughter starts selling used clothes as she has no money, no job. Rep Ilhan Omar's daughter Isra Hisri, who was arrested for a pro-Palestine campus protest and then got suspended from her college, took to social media to announce that she has no money and so she has to sell her used clothes to pay her bills. 'Unemployment got me,' she said, adding that she is selling her clothes on thrifting platform Depop. Hisri was suspended from Columbia University's liberal arts college, Barnard College, after she was arrested during a demonstration that turned hostile. Later, Barnard took her back and she graduated from the same college. At the graduation program, she held a Palestinian flag on the stage when she collected her diploma. On Instagram, she said that she finally got her graduation "despite what Barnard, Columbia and the internet wanted. " When Hirsi graduated earlier this year, Omar said in a statement she was 'overwhelmed with joy and gratitude' at getting to see her daughter collect her diploma despite her suspension. "It's been an incredible four years of tremendous growth and challenges as she navigated college life through a pandemic, move to NYC and a righteous fight against Columbia University's support of genocide," Omar wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "I am so proud of you, Isra and I can't wait to see you flourish in the real world." Science teachers turn drug chemists, busted for running high-tech MD lab in Sriganganagar
1 2 3 4 Jaipur: In a case echoing the plot of Breaking Bad, two science teachers from Rajasthan were arrested for operating a high-tech mephedrone (MD) drug lab out of a rented flat in Sriganganagar. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Jodhpur unit, raided the apartment Tuesday morning and uncovered a fully functional synthetic drug lab allegedly run by Manoj Bhargava (25), a govt school science teacher, and Indrajit Bishnoi (35), a former physics tutor now preparing for Rajasthan Administrative Services (RAS) exam. According to NCB, the duo turned their scientific knowledge into an illegal enterprise, using weekends to manufacture MD in a makeshift lab located in Riddhi-Siddhi Enclave, Dream Homes. This week, they even took leave Monday to extend production time. NCB zonal director Ghanshyam Soni, said, the lab was operating for over two months. "They rented the flat solely to manufacture drugs. They would stay there on weekends and used their knowledge of science to mix the chemicals in the right proportions," said an official. Officials revealed that around 5 kg of the synthetic drug was produced in the last two and a half months, with over 4 kg already pushed into the market—allegedly consumed largely by local youth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Inside the flat, officials found a sophisticated setup, including chemicals, laboratory-grade glassware, and other equipment. Seized substances included acetone, benzene, sodium bicarbonate, bromine, 4-methyl propiophenone, isopropyl alcohol, ethylamine, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone—all essential in MD synthesis. Most of these items are available in labs or chemical markets, with many of them sourced from Delhi. NCB launched the operation following a tip-off. Both accused are in custody, and investigations are underway.
