Underground tunnel work on Aerocity corridor done
New Delhi: The
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation
(DMRC) completed the construction of an underground tunnel between Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj Station on the Tughlaqabad-Aerocity corridor on Wednesday, a key aspect of phase 4 expansion.
The tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through at Vasant Kunj Station after boring a 1,550-metre-long tunnel. This milestone was accomplished with a massive 91-metre-long TBM. Two parallel circular tunnels for up and down movement are being constructed on this stretch. The breakthrough on the other parallel tunnel was achieved on March 6 this year, a statement from DMRC said.
The new tunnel was built at an average depth of about 22.86 metres (minimum depth 15.48 metres and maximum 30.25 metres).
About 1,105 rings were installed in the tunnel, with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres. The tunnel was built using the earth pressure balancing method with a concrete lining made of precast tunnel rings. These tunnel rings were cast at a fully mechanised casting yard set up at Mundka. The concrete segments were cured with a steam curing system to achieve early strength.
"All necessary safety precautions were taken during the construction of the tunnel below the existing structures.

As part of the phase 4 expansion work approved so far, the DMRC is constructing 40.109 kilometres of underground lines. The Aerocity-Tughlaqabad corridor has underground sections totalling 19.343 kilometres. The machine used, TBM, excavates tunnels with a circular cross-section through various soil and rock strata.
They can be designed to bore through anything from hard rock to sand.
"TBMs have revolutionised tunnelling work worldwide, enabling tunnels to be bored without disturbing buildings and other surface structures. TBMs are particularly useful for underground tunnelling work in congested urban areas. DMRC has been using TBMs for its tunnelling work since Phase 1. In phase 3, when approximately 50 kilometres of underground sections were built, about 30 TBMs were deployed in the national capital," said DMRC in a statement.

Mexico slaps cruise passengers with new tourist tax, fee set to quadruple by 2027
Starting this week, cruise passengers arriving in Mexico will be hit with a new tourist tax, a move that has stirred tensions between the cruise industry and the Mexican government, and left some local business owners fearing for their livelihoods, as per a report. New $5 Cruise Passenger Fee Begins This Week in Mexico The $5-per-passenger fee, which applies every time a cruise ship docks at a Mexican port, is set to gradually rise to $21 by 2027, as reported by New York Post. Landing gear snag delays Kol-Doha flight by 5 hrs
Kolkata: A suspected snag in the landing gear, probably due to hydraulics or electrical issue, delayed the departure of a Qatar Airways flight from Kolkata airport on Monday. The aircraft in use was a Boeing B 787-8 twinjet. The airline alternates between this aircraft and an Airbus A 350-900 twinjet on this sector. Flight QR 540 reached Kolkata at 2.14 am, around 6 minutes before the scheduled arrival. However, the return flight QR 541 departed nearly 5 hours behind schedule. Sources said the pilots may have either experienced a problem with the deployment of the landing gear prior to touchdown or received an alert on the cockpit instrument panel about an issue with the landing gear. After passengers alighted from the aircraft, the boarding of Doha-bound passengers was kept on hold while engineers looked into the landing gear, including the hydraulics, to sort out the issue. Reminding the airline that he was a frequent flier, he urged the airline to be more compassionate towards fliers' purpose of travel as he further added: "To make things worse, I paid Rs 24,606 for extra baggage just to carry my golf set for this tournament. Now I'm stranded at Kolkata Airport, unsure if I'll even make it. I chose this flight specifically so I could rest before my match." An airport official said the issue was resolved around 8.15 am, after which boarding commenced. The flight finally departed at 9.40 am instead of 3.50 am. Six days ago, only 11 passengers took the Qatar Airways flight to Doha after it was delayed by nearly 10 hours following the airspace closure in Qatar after Iranian missiles attacked a US airbase near the capital. A week prior to that, another Qatar flight was similarly delayed by 5 hours due to geopolitical turbulence in West Asia.

Centre delays green panel nod, airport expansion yet to take off
T'puram: Uncertainty looms large over the expansion of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, known as Project Anantha, due to administrative bottlenecks in obtaining environmental clearance. Centre's delay in approving the list of new committee members for State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), forwarded by state govt, is cited as the reason. Though state govt submitted the new list two months ago, Centre hasn't taken any decision on it. Originally scheduled to begin in April 2025, the project is now on hold after the previous SEIAA committee, responsible for reviewing and granting environmental approvals, expired on March 5. Even after four months, a new committee is yet to be formed, stalling progress on one of Kerala's most ambitious infrastructure developments. Airport operator Adani Airport Holdings Ltd submitted detailed plans for redeveloping terminals 1 and 2, which included a five-star hotel, underground parking, expanded passenger facilities and various commercial amenities. The revised master plan, which incorporated recommendations from ministry of environment, forest and climate change, was under review when SEIAA committee's term expired, effectively freezing all decisions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passa a WINDTRE, attiva a 0€ Passa a WINDTRE Undo Although SEIAA requested some modifications, the process couldn't continue due to the committee's dissolution. As a result, critical approvals required to commence construction remain pending. Aviation secretary K Biju confirmed that state govt submitted a list of new SEIAA committee members to Union ministry of environment and forests for approval. He told TOI that once Centre gives the green light, the new committee will be constituted and clearing the airport terminal expansion will be treated as a top priority. Until then, no construction activity can begin. According to sources close to the airport, a public hearing is due before obtaining environmental clearance. The public hearing is for clearance from Kerala state pollution control board. "We are waiting for the public hearing to be called by the pollution control board. That has to be decided by the board. However, we have not been informed about the hearing so far. Besides, the initial proceedings for Project Anantha are also yet to be completed," a source said. Project Anantha aims to transform the airport into a major international gateway capable of handling 27 million passengers annually and 0.42 million tonnes of cargo. One major structural feature of the plan is vertical expansion of the terminal building, with two separate levels for domestic and international passengers. Demolition of the existing domestic terminal has been deferred until after 2027 and will be reconsidered in the next control period. Meanwhile, the airport has been experiencing a significant rise in both passenger traffic and flight operations, further straining its outdated infrastructure.
