50,000 security personnel, anti-drone systems deployed for Kanwar Yatra in UP

Indian Express2 days ago
The Uttar Pradesh government has deployed more than 50,000 security personnel, advanced surveillance system and anti-drone and tethered-drone technologies to detect any threat along the Kanwar Yatra route, and set up a centralised control room for round-the-clock real-time monitoring of the pilgrimage, officials said.
Such an elaborate security bandobast, made on the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, was earlier put in place only during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj earlier this year and the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya in January 2024.
Also, nearly 29,500 CCTV cameras have been installed along the key routes and major congregation points to enhance vigilance, it is learnt.
The security personnel on the ground are drawn from the Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC), Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Quick Response Team (QRT) among others.
They include 39,965 male constables, 8,541 women constables, 1,424 home guards, 587 gazetted officers, 2,040 male inspectors, 1,486 women sub-inspectors and 13,520 sub-inspectors.
CM Adityanath reviewed the preparations and issued instructions to ensure arrangements for security, healthcare, sanitation, drinking water and traffic management.
As many as 395 high-tech drones, including anti-drone systems and tethered drones, are transmitting real-time video feeds directly to the police headquarters in Lucknow.
Tethered drones, which hover in a fixed position for extended periods, are proving particularly effective in monitoring dense crowds and enabling quick response in case of emergencies, the officials said.
The control room has been established at the DGP office on the lines of the Maha Kumbh Mela.
An eight-member social media surveillance team is also at work to continuously monitor online platforms for rumours, misleading information and sensitive posts. The team's mandate includes promptly alerting the district officials and ensuring swift removal of objectionable online content.
A separate control room team monitors inputs from electronic media, UP-112 helpline, and other channels to ensure seamless coordination and prompt response.
Details such as police officers' contact numbers, traffic diversion plans, and all Kanwar Yatra-related guidelines have been shared with the public through hoardings, newspapers, and social media.
For effective interstate coordination, a dedicated WhatsApp group comprising officials from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan has been created. This group facilitates an exchange of real-time information on route conditions, security updates, and crowd management plans.
The anti-drone systems detect unauthorised drones by using radar, sensors, and other advanced technologies. Once detected, these systems disrupt the drone's communication link through jamming, rendering it inoperable or physically destroying the drone using lasers or missiles.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed indigenous solutions like the D4S system which is capable of tracking, intercepting, and neutralising hostile drones with high precision, the officials added.
Tethered drones are connected to a ground-based power source via a cable, allowing them to remain airborne for extended durations without battery limitations. The tether also provides greater stability in windy conditions for continuous surveillance and communication in sensitive areas.

Ahead of EAM's visit, China says Tibet-related issues ‘thorn' in bilateral ties

New Delhi: Ahead of external affairs minister S Jaishankar's first visit to China since the deadly border clashes in 2020, Beijing on Sunday said that Tibet-related issues such as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama are a 'thorn' in bilateral relations that have become a 'burden' for New Delhi. China reacted angrily after the Dalai Lama announced ahead of his 90th birthday on July 9 that only a trust set up by him can recognise his reincarnation (AFP/ Representative photo) Jaishankar is set to visit China this week for the first time since bilateral ties plummeted to their lowest point in six decades because of the military standoff in Ladakh sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The two sides are currently engaged in the delicate task of normalising their relations after agreeing in October last year to end the face-off in Ladakh. China reacted angrily after the Dalai Lama announced ahead of his 90th birthday on July 9 that only a trust set up by him can recognise his reincarnation. The Dalai Lama's remarks were endorsed by Union minister Kiran Rijiju, who was one of two ministers who attended the spiritual leader's birthday celebration in Dharamshala. Beijing said that the next Dalai Lama would have to be approved by the Chinese government. On Sunday, Chinese embassy spokesperson Yu Jing said on social media that members of the strategic and academic communities, including former officials, had made 'improper remarks' regarding the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. Such professionals, she said, should be 'fully cognisant of the sensitivity of issues related to Xizang', using the name by which China refers to Tibet. The succession of the Dalai Lama is 'inherently an internal affair of China, brooking no interference of any external forces,' Yu said. 'In reality, Xizang-related issue is a thorn in China-India relations and has become a burden for India. Playing the'Xizang card' will definitely end up shooting oneself in the foot,' she said. Also Read: Jaishankar to visit China for SCO meeting, his first after standoff in 2020 Earlier, Chinese ambassador Xu Feihong too had weighed in on the Dalai Lama's reincarnation, saying on social media that the Chinese government regulates religious affairs that involve national interests. He also accused the Dalai Lama of engaging in 'anti-China separatist activities'. Xu said: 'Chinese government opposes any attempts by overseas organisations or individuals to interfere in or dictate the reincarnation process.' Xu added, 'No interference by any external forces will be allowed.' Also Read: India-China relations at 75: An uncertain thaw The Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India since he fled Tibet amid a Chinese military crackdown in 1959. Following China's strong reaction to the Dalai Lama's recent remarks, the external affairs ministry said on July 4 that the government does not take any position or speak on matters related to beliefs and practices of faith and religion. Jaishankar is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during his visit to China on July 14 and 15 to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The two foreign ministers are expected to take forward discussions to normalise bilateral relations and address the long-standing border dispute between India and China.

How Pakistani Handlers Used A Popular Mobile Game To Target Rajasthan Man

Bhilwara, Rajasthan: Like thousands of youngsters in India, Mohammed Sohail Bhishti from Rajasthan's Bhilwara was also a big fan of online gaming. The 23-year-old began playing the popular Free Fire -- a battle royale-style survival shooter mobile game that allows players from around the globe to interact with each other. Over the next few months, Sohail came in contact with other players, and thus began his spiral towards extremism. Sohail was arrested in September last year, and the chargesheet filed by Rajasthan's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has revealed details not just about Sohail but also foreign-linked online networks that are targeting Indians to spread their extremist ideologies. The ATS has formally presented its case in court, charging Sohail under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which pertains to advocating or inciting unlawful activity. The court is set to begin hearings in the case on July 16. Gateway To Radicalisation Sohail's engagement with the online gaming platform led him into encrypted chat groups, many of which had associations with radical networks allegedly operating from Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. According to the ATS, Sohail became a member of over 60 such online groups and acted as an administrator in several of them. These groups operated under the guise of gaming forums but, according to the ATS, were spreading anti-India propaganda. It was within these networks that Sohail began corresponding with individuals operating Pakistani phone numbers. The chargesheet names contacts saved in his phone as "Hameed Mustafa", "Mahboob Ali", and "PK Rawalpindi". Authorities believe these individuals are associated with digital cells operating from across the border. 'Mujahid Mian' The ATS alleges that Sohail, using the alias 'Mujahid Mian', ran a YouTube channel that promoted inflammatory content, including visuals of Taliban fighters and protest footage related to the Babri Masjid, Jama Masjid, and the 2022 Amravati riots. Several videos, recovered from his devices by forensic teams, were said to contain communally charged content. In addition to YouTube, Sohail was active on other platforms, including Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The forensic report submitted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) on February 28 last year confirmed this. To mask his identity, Sohail is reported to have employed multiple mobile devices and SIM cards. He would activate a hotspot from one phone and use another to upload videos, ensuring his IP address was safe. Videos uploaded from one account were often 'liked' or 'boosted' using other accounts under his control, giving an artificial sense of reach and endorsement. According to the ATS, Sohail's radicalisation interacted with social media profiles claiming to be Pakistani women. The accounts used names suggestive of Islamic military ranks and referred to themselves as "commander" or "sister in arms". The conversations, conducted in English, reportedly included anti-India content. Sohail's Background Sohail lived in Shahpura, a semi-urban locality in Bhilwara district. His father works as a house painter. Sohail had studied till Class 12 in a government school and held a job at an auto parts shop with a monthly wage of Rs 8,000. His personal life was also on the cusp of change. He had become engaged to a woman from Madhya Pradesh, just 15 days before his arrest. There is no evidence so far to suggest that his immediate family or fiancee were aware of his online activities. Timeline of Inve stigation September 15, 2023: Sohail was arrested by ATS officers from his residence in Bhilwara following weeks of surveillance and digital monitoring. February 28, 2024: The Forensic Science Laboratory submitted its report detailing the contents of Sohail's mobile devices and digital footprint. March 11, 2024: The Rajasthan state government granted formal permission to prosecute Sohail under UAPA and IPC provisions, designating the case as sensitive. June 2, 2025: ATS submitted a detailed chargesheet to the Jaipur sessions court, comprising statements, forensic analysis, and digital evidence.
