Guernsey FC and Jersey Bulls return to FA Cup

BBC News3 days ago

Guernsey FC will play in the FA Cup for the first time in eight years - and could meet Jersey Bulls in the competition. The Green Lions have not played in the world's oldest knockout tournament since 2016 after pulling out for financial reasons. Meanwhile Jersey Bulls have returned to the tournament after withdrawing last season due to issues with travel logistics. The Channel Island rivals could meet as early as August's extra preliminary round - the two club teams have never faced one another before. "It's been a long time since we entered the FA Cup," Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance told BBC Radio Guernsey."Financially it costs us, it's not all the bright lights and excitement everyone thinks - you have to win about seven games to even remotely have a chance of earning any income, so those extra games do cost you, but that aside it's exciting and it brings a fresh impetus to the season."It's the most famous club competition in the world and it's got so much history."We've been lucky enough to play in it, the trophy came over here once and it was amazing."You can only dream of getting to a certain level, but teams at our level have done it so there's always that dream."
Jersey Bulls will play in the FA Trophy for the first time, having won promotion to the Isthmian League last season after winning the Combined Counties Premier South play-offs. Bulls were knocked out of the FA Vase by eventual winners Whitstable Town in the third round last season and will start in the FA Trophy's first qualifying round - they could face sides from the National League if they are able to make the third round proper.Guernsey FC will also play in the FA Vase this season after their relegation from the Isthmian League to the Southern Combination Premier Division. They are eligible for the competition for the first time since they made the semi-finals back in 2013, when they lost 4-1 on aggregate to Spennymoor.

Non-league manager is slapped with six-game ban after joking female referees 'need help parking' in controversial comment on a podcast

Dorking Wanderers manager Marc White has received a six-game touchline ban for a sexist comment made on a podcast. When discussing his disciplinary record on the Under The Cosh podcast, White said: 'More women refs now, so you have to pay a bit more respect, do you know what I mean? 'You have to pay a bit more respect, like help them park.' In May White, who also owns Dorking, was charged by the FA with using insulting or abusive words. The FA stated that White's comments were an aggravated breach of the rules because of the reference made to gender. Dorking confirmed that White will not be in the dugout for their first six games of the National League South season. A statement from Dorking read: "Following (intended fun) comments made on a podcast regarding women drivers, first team manager Marc White has received a six-game touchline suspension to be served from the beginning of the league season.' White made the comments prior to Dorking's 3-1 loss against Weston-super-Mare last season. In 1999 White founded Dorking with friends as an amateur team and initially played for the club. The 51-year-old has helped Dorking to secure 12 promotions in 23 years. White has overseen more than 1,000 matches in charge of Dorking. His side were beaten by Boreham Wood last season in the National League South play-of final.

It is also reported that Fletcher had reservations about taking up the position in the past, with his twin sons Jack and Tyler playing at that age group. But they've now moved up to 21s, paving the way for Fletcher to begin his first steps in management. The role is currently vacant after Adam Lawrence left at the end last season to "seek a new challenge" following four years at the club. And Fletcher, who holds a UEFA A licence, is rated by sporting director Jason Wilcox and departing academy director Nick Cox who's becoming technical director at Everton. Fletcher made his playing debut in the Champions League in 2003 under Sir Alex Ferguson against Basel. The midfielder would go on to amass more than 300 games for the club, scoring 24 goals. He also played almost 100 games for West Brom and 42 for Stoke City towards the end of his career after recovering from ulcerative colitis. He was diagnosed with the debilitating bowel condition in 2011 and was forced to take time away from the game. He won five Premier League titles in a glittering career as well as the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. Darren Fletcher says Walter Smith was behind Cristiano Ronaldo's transformation as kid at Man Utd The ex-midfielder returned to the Man Utd in 2020 to coach their under 16s and was promoted to first-team coach the following season. He then became a technical director in March 2021 for three years helping to bridge the gap between the academy and first team before being replaced by Jason Wilcox. He then returned to a coaching capacity under Eric ten Hag and Amorim before reportedly holding talks about current vacancy at the U18s managerial position.
