Born on September 17, 1997, in San Ramon, California. Auston Matthews was raised in Scottsdale, Arizona. While baseball initially caught his attention, hockey quickly took over.
By age five, he was regularly attending Phoenix Coyotes games. His hand-eye coordination set him apart from his peers, and he eventually joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.
Matthews took an unconventional route to the NHL. And spending a season with the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League. Instead of playing NCAA or Canadian junior hockey, his strong performance overseas raised his draft stock.
This is leading to the Toronto Maple Leafs selecting him No. 1 overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, the first American to do so since Patrick Kane.
34 Amazing Auston Matthews Highlights
A record-setting NHL debut and a Leafs legacy in motion
Matthews's debut in the National Hockey League was nothing short of sensational. In his first game, he scored four goals, setting a modern-era record for a rookie. His 40-goal rookie campaign earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best newcomer. He became only the second teen since the 2004–05 lockout to hit that goal milestone, joining Alexander Ovechkin.

How Caitlin Clark's ongoing recovery could impact the Indiana Fever's clash with the New York Liberty

(Image Source - Getty Images) The Indiana Fever are set to go up against the New York Liberty on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, the focus isn't solely on the game—it's on whether star player Caitlin Clark will be on the floor. Clark, the Fever's leading point guard, has been struggling with a right groin injury, and it seems unlikely she'll be able to play in this matchup. Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White addresses Caitlin Clark's injury On July 15, 2025, Caitlin Clark suffered an injury during a match with the Connecticut Sun. With only 30 seconds left on the clock, she made a pass to Kelsey Mitchell and immediately exhibited signs of distress. Her facial expression revealed everything—she was in pain. She held her right groin and left the court, unable to continue playing. After the game, Fever coach Stephanie White shared an initial update with reporters, saying, 'She felt a little something in her groin, so we'll get it evaluated and see what happens' On July 16, the day after, the Fever indicated that Clark was questionable for the game against the Liberty planned for July 17, with the team tweeting, 'Caitlin Clark is questionable for tomorrow's game against New York with a right groin injury'. By July 17, though, the verdict was in: Clark was officially ruled out for that game, with the Fever confirming via X, 'Caitlin Clark has been downgraded to OUT for tonight's game vs. New York due to a right groin injury'. Caitlin Clark skips Indiana Fever practice while awaiting results from injury scans After the injury, the Fever have kept things under wraps but are being careful about Caitlin Clark's recovery. On July 20, 2025, Coach Stephanie White talked to the media after the team resumed practice following the All-Star break. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo She gave the latest update, mentioning, 'She's going to see some doctors and get some more tests around early in the week. You know, I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday, so we're just going to continue to take it one day at a time and let her get her evaluations early this week, and then once we've done that, hopefully we'll have a clear line of what it looks like'. Clark herself didn't make it to that Sunday practice, along with her All-Star teammates Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell, who were probably just resting up after the weekend's events. Missing out on the All-Star festivities really hit Clark hard. She opened up to reporters before the All-Star Game, sharing her feelings of frustration: 'When the injury happened, it was pretty frustrating, considering I knew what the coming days were gonna hold for myself. But I feel like dealing with that, and then also just like trying to look at it in the most positive manner that I can... I think just it all comes back to having good perspective on everything'. Coach Stephanie White trusts Indiana Fever's adaptability in Caitlin Clark's absence Clark is the heart of the Fever's offense. She's an excellent shooter and playmaker, consistently putting up high points and assists when she's healthy. If she's not playing, the team will turn to Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. Mitchell is a fantastic scorer from three-point range, and Boston is a strong presence in the paint, so they have to really step up. The bench will also need to bring some extra hustle to keep the Fever in the fight. Stephanie White gives concerning update on Caitlin Clark groin Injury Coach White is confident in the team's ability to adapt, telling IndyStar, 'This group has played without her; we've at least got experience in that. We know that we have a tough opponent in New York, and we know it's going to be a challenge no matter what'. The Fever have managed to adjust before, with an 8-4 record in games Clark missed earlier this season, but the Liberty present a whole new level of difficulty. Playing as a guard, she applies pressure on opponents out on the perimeter and causes turnovers. Without her presence, the Fever could find it hard to manage the Liberty's guards, such as Sabrina Ionescu, who can score from beyond the arc. The team may need to modify their defensive approach, putting extra pressure on other players to make up for her. FAQs What injury is Caitlin Clark currently dealing with? A right groin strain from the July 15 game against the Connecticut Sun. How many games has Clark missed this season? She's missed 11 of the Fever's 23 regular-season games When is Clark expected to return? 'Ravindra Jadeja fought very hard but ... ': Mohammed Siraj breaks silence on gut-wrenching Lord's defeat

Mohammed Siraj (Getty Images) With India now in a must-win situation to keep their hopes alive for a first Test series win in England in 18 years, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj admitted he is still heartbroken over the narrow 22-run loss at Lord's ahead of the crucial fourth Test at Old Trafford, starting July 23. Siraj, alongside Ravindra Jadeja , was fighting hard during the final session of Day 5, inching closer to the target before an unfortunate moment saw him defend a delivery from Shoaib Bashir, only for the ball to roll back onto the stumps and dislodge the bail. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I had taken the final wicket in 2021 as well. I am a very emotional person; it could have been 2-1. Jaddu bhai fought very hard. But then I said to myself that the series is not over and I will work on my batting. We kept working hard on our batting since Australia. The 22-run loss was heartbreaking,' Siraj said during the pre-match press conference. Reflecting further on the dismissal, Siraj said the result might have been different had luck favoured them in that moment. Mohammed Siraj press conference: Akash Deep and Bumrah update, on India vs Pakistan, warning to ENG 'To middle the ball and still get bowled, the way we were batting together, I was feeling confident and thought I will not get out today. But it was unlucky and it was heartbreaking because the result could have been entirely different,' he added. "There are no plans regarding this. When you are bowling, you are in another zone; your focus is on taking wickets, so you don't know what you say. You want to divert the batter — like when I asked Root, 'Where is the Bazball?'" When asked whether he'll continue with the same fiery energy in the fourth Test, Siraj responded without hesitation: 'yes.' Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

IND vs ENG: 'England won't, India might' - Former England pacer gives crucial bowling advice for Manchester Test

Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav during a net session at Emirates Old Trafford (Photo by) Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison believes India may consider fielding three spinners in their playing XI for the fourth Test against England, starting Wednesday at Old Trafford in Manchester. India currently trail 1-2 in the five-match series, with the upcoming match potentially deciding the direction of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. In the last two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord's, India opted for a two-spinner strategy with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. The move paid off in Birmingham with a win, while they fell narrowly short by 22 runs at Lord's. Weighing India's bowling tactics for the upcoming Test, Harmison said the conditions in Manchester could justify adding Kuldeep Yadav to the mix. 'If it's going to rain anywhere in England, and it hasn't rained here in almost three months, it'll be in Manchester. If there's any venue where you might consider playing two spinners or even three, it's Manchester. England won't go that route; they have got Liam Dawson, but India might consider it. I expect a wicket very similar to what we saw at Edgbaston and Lord's, one that will break up as the game progresses and offer turn later on. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo But I don't see much pace or bounce in it, and once again, we could be looking at a lower-scoring affair,' said Harmison, speaking on JioHotstar's 'Follow The Blues', Mohammed Siraj press conference: Akash Deep and Bumrah update, on India vs Pakistan, warning to ENG He further weighed in on Kuldeep's role and the challenge of adjusting the combination. "The wicket in the fourth Test is not going to offer bounce to Kuldeep, but it will spin as the Test match progresses. And with the last three Tests all going deep into the fifth day, India have to seriously consider playing a second or even a third spinner. At the moment, their side is well-balanced. But the challenge lies in finding a way to bring Kuldeep Yadav in. You cannot drop Washington Sundar or Ravindra Jadeja," he explained. Poll Should India consider playing three spinners in the fourth Test against England? Yes, due to the conditions in Manchester. No, stick with two spinners. Making room for Kuldeep could require a difficult selection call. "So, can you play three spinners? That would be a big call, especially considering the situation around Jasprit Bumrah. Picking Kuldeep can be the right move, but how would you fit him in? There may have to be a tough decision – is it Sundar who misses out? I wouldn't want to be the one making that call," Harmison added. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
