Former Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ahmadshah Dies
Sabah State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong confirmed the news of his passing in a statement issued here tonight.
'The state government has declared a one-day official mourning period (tomorrow), during which the Sabah state flag will be flown at half-mast,' he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmadshah's grandson Arfanshah Abdul Gafar called on the public to offer prayers and recite Surah Al-Fatihah for his late grandfather.
'Please recite Al-Fatihah for my grandfather, Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Ahmadshah bin Abdullah, who passed away a short while ago at KPJ Hospital Kota Kinabalu. May he be placed among the faithful. Aamiin Ya Mujib,' he said in a Facebook post.
Ahmadshah was sworn in as Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah on Jan 1, 2003, for a four-year term and was reappointed for a second term from Jan 1, 2007, to Dec 31, 2010.
He was married to Toh Puan Dayang Masuyah Awang Japardan, who passed away in 2020, and they were blessed with four children.
Born in Kampung Inanam here on Dec 9, 1946, Ahmadshah, held a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Indiana State University, United States, and last served as deputy secretary to the Sabah State Government before retiring on Dec 9, 2002.
He also held several key positions in the state administration, including Director of the Sabah Public Services Department, Head of the Home Affairs and Research Division in the Chief Minister's Department, and Secretary of the Sabah Islamic Religious Council.

Ahmad Ibrahim Sworn In As Senator For Second Term
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim was today sworn in as a senator for a second term. He took the oath of office before Dewan Negara president Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah. Ahmad was reappointed by the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly for a three-year term, effective today and running until July 22, 2028. Previously, Ahmad, 55, served as a senator from July 22, 2022, until July 21 this year. Meanwhile, Awang Bemee, in his speech, welcomed Ahmad's reappointment and reminded all senators to remain well-informed on current issues, while upholding the principles and responsibilities of the Dewan Negara as the country's highest legislative body. At a press conference after the ceremony, Ahmad said that his reappointment was a mandate to continue defending the rights and privileges of Sarawak, within the framework of the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). The Kanowit native pledged to carry out the trust placed in him with greater determination, enthusiasm and dedication, supported by fellow members of the Senate. 'Let us continue to move forward, not merely as a voice of protest, but as a voice of hope - not to divide, but to strengthen unity. Azalina Tables Motion To Extend Debate On Auditor-general's Report
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said tabled a motion in the Dewan Rakyat today to extend the debate on the Auditor-General's Report (LKAN) to facilitate institutional checks and balances. She said the move is part of ongoing reforms to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness of public entities, and reinforce the government's push for stronger public sector governance and supporting the oversight of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). 'In line with the principles of transparency and accountability, the MADANI Government has taken a significant step by not only tabling the LKAN in this Honourable House but also allowing it to be openly debated. 'This is a departure from previous administrations that only tabled the report without debate,' she said while tabling the LKAN 2/2025 motion in the Dewan Rakyat today, adding that since June 6, 2023, the report has been debated four times. She said the report, which covers the activities of ministries, departments, statutory bodies and federal government-linked companies, presents audit findings on five programmes, activities, or projects across seven ministries, with a total audited value of RM48.873 billion. Azalina said LKAN 2/2025 highlighted serious irregularities in three of the five audited programmes, potentially undermining their efficiency and intended impact. 'To address these shortcomings and prevent recurrence, the report sets out 22 recommendations for the relevant ministries, departments, agencies and federal government-linked companies to act upon. 'This initiative creates a direct avenue for more members of parliament to play an active role in ensuring government funds are managed prudently in the public interest,' she said. She added that the debate is also intended to provide a platform for discussing concrete steps to address the issues raised, ensuring they are given due attention before effective corrective action is taken.
