TN govt installed 63 statues, 11 memorial halls in 4 years to honour icons, freedom fighters: CM
Chennai: In a landmark initiative to commemorate national leaders, Tamil scholars, and freedom fighters, the Tamil Nadu government under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has installed 63 statues and established 11 commemorative halls across the state over the past four years, according to an official statement issued on Sunday.
Reaffirming its commitment to preserving the legacy of those who fought for India's freedom and championed the Tamil language, the government said the initiative aims to inspire future generations to embrace their values and sacrifice for the nation and culture. 'Among the most iconic achievements is the 133-foot-tall statue of Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar in Kanniyakumari, originally conceptualised by former CM M. Karunanidhi. To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated the adjoining 'Wisdom Dome' on December 30, 2024,' the statement noted.
The government has also unveiled statues of Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, Tamil poet Subramania Bharathiar, former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar, Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy, renowned singer T.M. Soundararajan, and senior DMK leader K. Anbazhagan, among others. Memorial halls and statues have further been dedicated to freedom fighters such as Veeran Sundaralingam, Kuyili, and V.O. Chidambaram, alongside monuments celebrating literary pioneers including Mayuram Vedanayagam Pillai and Bharathidasan.
'Taking Tamil pride beyond the borders of the state, the government also established a statue of humanitarian and engineer Colonel John Pennycuick in the UK, and constructed a memorial house for poet Bharathiar in Varanasi, further cementing Tamil Nadu's cultural legacy on the global stage,' the statement added.
Drawing a comparison with previous administrations, the government pointed out that only 25 statues were erected between 2011 and 2021 under the AIADMK regime. It described that period as one of 'limited vision and neglect' of Tamil cultural icons. In contrast, the present government said its inclusive cultural initiatives, spanning historical, literary, and social reform figures, now serve as a model for the entire nation, celebrating diversity and heritage.

'We expect a transparent probe, but however, having known that the last 24 murders, there is no headway, this will be another big cover up from the DMK, but definitely those who are behind will be brought to justice, and AIADMK will stand by those people who demand justice, particularly the Ajith Kumar's family,' the AIADMK leader said Sathyan further said that temporary suspension and transfers to other departments will not work. As he claimed he did not know how to drive, he is said to have arranged for someone else to move the car. After their darshan at the temple, Niktha received the car keys back from Ajithkumar. Upon checking, she found that 9 1/2 sovereigns of gold jewellery kept inside the car were missing. When she questioned Ajit kumar, he allegedly denied any knowledge of the missing valuables. Following this, Niktha lodged a complaint with the police. A special team from the Manamadurai crime branch arrived at the temple and took Ajithkumar in for questioning in a police van. Later that evening, police claimed that Ajit kumar developed sudden health complications. He was first taken to a private hospital in Sivaganga and then referred to another hospital in Madurai. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead on arrival. Kumar's family members and friends alleged that he died as a result of police assault during interrogation.

The death of a 27-year-old temple security guard following police questioning in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district has triggered a political row, with opposition leaders demanding a judicial inquiry, the arrest of police personnel, and the resignation of Chief Minister M K Stalin. B Ajith Kumar, who worked as a temporary guard at the Madapuram Badrakaliamman Temple near Tiruppuvanam, was picked up on Saturday by a special police team investigating a complaint of gold jewellery theft. The complaint had been filed by a devotee from Madurai, who alleged that 9.5 sovereigns of gold kept in her car went missing during her visit to the temple. Ajith, who briefly had access to the car key since he was helping her with parking, was questioned and released, but later detained again for further questioning. During the second round of questioning, Ajith reportedly complained of discomfort. Police took him to a hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead'. His family has alleged that he was tortured in custody. His younger brother, B Naveenkumar, claimed both of them were tied up and beaten during transport in a police vehicle. The incident prompted the immediate suspension of six police personnel attached to the Manamadurai sub-division. Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat announced the suspensions on Sunday and promised a fair inquiry. Meanwhile, R Venkadesh Prasanth, the District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate of Tiruppuvanam, has begun an inquest into the death. Police officials said a case has been registered under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. As news of the death spread, residents of Madapuram, along with AIADMK workers led by local MLA Senthilnathan, staged a road blockade demanding justice and that Ajith's family be allowed to travel in a government vehicle to retrieve the body. Tensions subsided only after district officials arranged for government transportation and assured compensation. AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami demanded a judicial magistrate-led probe and compensation for Ajith's family. 'Even if police suspect someone of a crime, they must follow due legal process. Custodial torture is unacceptable,' he said in a statement, accusing the DMK government of failing to rein in police excesses. BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran echoed similar concerns, alleging that Ajith was 'beaten over two days by seven policemen'. He referred to an earlier incident in which women, including a pregnant complainant, were allegedly assaulted at a police station. 'This points to a disturbing pattern of police brutality. The DMK government has failed to make police stations safe for the poor and the marginalised,' he said. PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss took direct aim at Chief Minister Stalin, citing 28 alleged custodial deaths in the past four years under the DMK regime. 'As opposition leader, Stalin had demanded the resignation of then-CM Palaniswami during the Sathankulam custodial deaths. If he has a conscience, he should now step down himself,' he said. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) demanded the arrest of all officers involved, calling the death a 'custodial murder'. NTK leader Seeman said suspensions were insufficient and demanded that a murder case be registered. DMDK's Premalatha Vijayakant called for systemic reforms to prevent further such deaths.
