25th custodial murder in Tamil Nadu since DMK came to power: AIADMK's Kovai Sathyan on temple guard's death

India Gazette7 hours ago

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 30 (ANI): Following the death of a temple guard from allegedly in police custody in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) spokesperson Kovai Sathyan alleged that this was the 25th custodial murder under Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and there was a blatant cover-up of evidence.
Kovai Sathyan said, 'This is not a custodial death. This is the 25th custodial murder since DMK came to power. Ajith Kumar, a security guard with the temple and his brother, who had been called for an inquiry, were exposed to brutality. Ajith Kumar succumbed to the police brutality within the police station itself, and there is a blatant cover-up of evidence that relates to brutality, such as the plastic pipes, chilli powders, and iron rods, which were all removed from the scene. This clearly indicates how rattled the entire scenario is with respect to the police force handling Ajith Kumar.'
He alleged that a major cover-up was happening in connection with the death of Ajith Kumar.
'We expect a transparent probe, but however, having known that the last 24 murders, there is no headway, this will be another big cover up from the DMK, but definitely those who are behind will be brought to justice, and AIADMK will stand by those people who demand justice, particularly the Ajith Kumar's family,' the AIADMK leader said
Sathyan further said that temporary suspension and transfers to other departments will not work.
'This has to stop. Ajit Kumar was not a history sheeter. He did not have any criminal record. There is no trace that he was unwell,' the AIADMK spokesperson said.
Relatives of a Ajit Kumar employed as a security guard at the at the Madapuram Kaliamman temple in Tirupuvanam have alleged that the 28-year-old man died after being beaten and tortured during interrogation by police..
Ajit Kumar was initially detained for questioning regarding a theft at the Madapuram Kaliamman temple, the district Superintendent of Police said.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter and to provide compensation for Kumar's family.
In a post on X, Palaniswami said, 'Ajit Kumar, a security guard at the Madapuram temple in Sivagangai district, was reportedly arrested and interrogated by the Thirupuvanam police following a complaint that he had stolen 9.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a female devotee's car. During the interrogation, Ajit Kumar allegedly died due to police assault. His relatives, refusing to accept his body, have launched a protest.'
'Where is the Chief Minister who once wrote a movie review saying, 'I watched Jai Bhim, it shook my heart'? Weren't you the one who blatantly lied even in the State Assembly during the Vignesh lock-up death case? Will we hear the same kind of lies as a response to this case too? If the police believe someone has committed a crime, they must arrest and produce them before the court, following due legal process. they cannot take the law completely into their own hands,' he further said.
'I strongly condemn this puppet Chief Minister who cannot even manage the police force that functions directly under his control. Regarding the death of Ajit Kumar, the temple guard, at the Thirupuvanam police station, I urge this so-called DMK 'Stalin-model' government to immediately form a committee headed by the District Judge to conduct a full investigation, take legal action against those responsible for this death, and provide compensation to the family of the deceased,' Palaniswami said.
Sivaganga District SP said that six policemen of the crime branch unit involved in the questioning of Ajith Kumar have been placed under suspension by the District Superintendent of Police and an investigation is underway.
Kumar was picked up by police for questioning following a complaint filed by two women, Sivakami and her daughter Nikitha, who alleged that about 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery had gone missing from their car. (ANI)

Rajnath-led DAC to clear over Rs 1 lakh crore in defence upgrades amid ongoing Operation Sindoor

Defence minister Rajnath Singh (ANI) NEW DELHI: In the midst of Operation Sindoor, the defence acquisition council (DAC) headed by defence minister Rajnath Singh is set to convene this week to consider a sweeping set of military modernisation proposals worth over Rs 1 lakh crore. According to defence sources cited by ANI, the high-stakes meeting, scheduled for later this week, will include approvals for a wide range of acquisitions aimed at strengthening India's air, naval, and ground defence capabilities. This will be the first DAC meeting since India launched Operation Sindoor, its recent counter-terror and cross-border surveillance campaign. Big push for air defence Among the top proposals is the clearance of the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system developed by DRDO. The Rs 30,000 crore project is intended to significantly bolster the Indian Army's air defence capability, offering interception capability against aerial threats up to 30 km away. IAF eyes ground surveillance The Indian Air Force is also pushing for the purchase of three intelligence, surveillance, targeting and reconnaissance (I-STAR) aircraft to enhance real-time battlefield awareness and precision strike capabilities. EPS saying AIADMK will have majority win shows party's conflict with BJP: Thirumavalavan

VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has seen an inherent conflict between the AIADMK and the BJP on whether they would form a coalition government, if they win next year's Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. 'While Union Home Minister Amit Shah is repeating there will be a coalition government, AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami has made it clear that his party will win with a majority (hinting it will form a single party rule),' he said. Addressing a public meeting at Melavalavu near Madurai on Monday to mark the anniversary of 'Melavalavu massacre', in which seven Scheduled Caste people, including panchayat president Murugesan, were murdered decades ago, he pointed to Mr. Palaniswami's statement that no party could gobble up the AIADMK, and said the AIADMK leader was referring to the BJP attempting to undermine his party. 'If it was about the DMK, he (Palaniswami) cannot say 'gobble up' as the DMK only thinks of defeating the AIADMK electorally. Only the BJP is planning to disrupt the opposition party to put it as a replacement,' he charged. Welcoming AIADMK's position of not losing their uniqueness in dealing with the BJP, he said the repeated instances showed that there was an ongoing conflict between them. He said everyone was preying upon the VCK to get a hint of disruption in the DMK alliance, but that would not happen as their alliance was to save the State from Hindutva organisations. Commenting on the Hindu Munnani's mocking video on former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai and Periyar E.V. Ramasamy during the recent Muruga Bhakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu in Madurai, Mr. Thirumavalavan said the 'Sangh' could never criticise or mock Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. 'Though everyone knows they have a hidden agenda, they try to portray B.R. Ambedkar as their guiding light,' he added. Starting from BJP's win in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party had been trying to alter the Constitution. 'Martyrs like Murugesan, who lost their life to the brutal violence staged by caste Hindus, fought for their right to become the panchayat president,' he added. Mr. Thirumavalavan said Murugesan stood for his rights despite being aware of the consequences. 'But our struggle should not just stop with winning a panchayat president seat, but it should expand to rule the country, that is when our struggle will have a meaning,' he said. The VCK, which was started as a social organisation, had never fallen for the offer of more seats in an alliance. The party's aim was not just to attain political power but to educate people and politicise them. 'When other parties can feel proud of winning seats and earning money, we can proclaim that we have politicised people about their rights and role in society,' Mr. Thirumavalavan added.
