Hospitality Advisory Council discusses new national initiatives to boost growth and employment opportunities in the sector
Abu Dhabi: The Hospitality Advisory Council convened its second meeting of 2025 under the chairmanship of H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Emirates Tourism Council. The session brought together 16 Council members, including CEOs and senior executives from leading national and international hotel groups. Discussions focused on a range of new national initiatives developed in partnership with the private sector to accelerate the growth of the UAE's hospitality sector. The initiatives also aim to generate employment opportunities across all sectors of this vital industry.
H.E. Bin Touq said: "Thanks to the vision and guidance of our wise leadership, the UAE's tourism and hospitality sectors continue to thrive. In the first quarter of 2025, hotel revenues reached AED 13.5 billion, with over 8.4 million guests recorded, a two per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. Total hotel nights reached 29.3 million, and the national hotel occupancy rate stood at 81.3 per cent during the same period."
H.E. added: "These impressive figures reflect the UAE's strong commitment to advancing its hospitality industry in line with global best practices. We have invested heavily in developing hotel and entertainment infrastructure across all seven emirates, organizing major international events, and delivering exceptional hospitality experiences that reflect authentic Emirati heritage and culture. As a result, the UAE has become one of the world's leading hospitality destinations today."
The Minister of Economy continued: "The year 2025 marks a major milestone for UAE tourism, marked by the election of Shaikha Al Nowais as the first woman globally to serve as Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization for the term 2026-2029. This achievement reinforces the UAE's prominent role in supporting international efforts to advance the global tourism industry.'
The meeting's discussions covered a comprehensive array of key files and initiatives that support the UAE's efforts to enhance the growth and competitiveness of its hospitality sector. Participants emphasized the importance of promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors to meet the objectives of the National Tourism Strategy 2031, which aims to establish the UAE as the top global tourism brand by the next decade.
The Council also reviewed the newly launched 'Summer Hospitality Camp' program by the Ministry of Economy. It is designed to support Emiratization across hospitality-related sectors by offering hands-on training to school and university students in real-world environments such as hotels and tourism facilities, in addition to its structured learning tracks.
Established by the Emirates Tourism Council, the Hospitality Advisory Council serves as a strategic advisory body to the Chairman of the Emirates Tourism Council on matters specific to the hospitality sector. It provides insights and data on industry developments, recommends private-sector initiatives to drive sector growth and reinforce the UAE's position as a leading global tourism destination, and offers feedback on government tourism policies and initiatives.

As the UAE officially enters summer − following the hottest May on record, with temperatures topping 50°C − authorities and community groups are stepping up efforts to protect outdoor workers from extreme heat. In Dubai, the second year of the Al Freej Fridge campaign − Al Freej means neighbourhood in Arabic − is distributing cold drinks and frozen treats to thousands of frontline workers. As temperatures neared the 40°C mark on Saturday, construction workers from developer Azizi Group received cooling treats from volunteers, including Mirwais Azizi, founder and chairman of Azizi Developments, and four of his grandchildren. The campaign, led by neighbourhood community initiative Ferjan Dubai, with support from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, the UAE Water Aid Foundation − also known as Suqia − and the UAE Food Bank, aims to distribute more than two million bottles of water, juice and frozen treats to Dubai's frontline workers. Employees including cleaners, construction workers, delivery drivers and landscapers across Dubai are set to benefit from the initiative over the summer months. 'Without these labourers we are nothing. Without them we can't build anything in Dubai.' Mr Azizi told The National. 'I came today to give small gifts to labourers to show them respect.' Ibrahim Al Blooshi, director of sustainability and partnership at MBRGI said: 'Today, we distributed 12,500 items to over 4,000 workers. The initiative will be running until August 23.' Organisers say roaming refrigerated trucks and fixed fridges at worker accommodation ensure consistent access to cold drinks. Volunteers are also using personal vehicles to distribute beverages to sites across the city. Halim Mondal, a 30-year-old Indian carpenter, told The National that it's a good break from his routine work at Azizi Venice construction site in Dubai South. 'Usually, we take break in the afternoon and rest. Today, they asked us to line up for some gifts.' Shahzaib Alaldden, 28-year-old construction worker from Pakistan, said the initiative is a testament that Dubai really cares for its workers. 'I have an ice cream, a bottle of water and juice. It's a beautiful gesture,' Mr Alaldden told The National. 'I've been working in Dubai for six months in Azizi group. With the rise of summer temperatures, our managers make sure that we have enough water and good labour conditions.' The campaign comes as Dubai authorities ramp up enforcement of the midday break rule. The annual ban prevents labourers from carrying out any work under direct sunlight between 12pm and 3pm throughout the three-month period. An estimated half million construction workers in Dubai are expected to benefit from the Ministry of Labour's three-month mandatory midday break regulation this year.

Emirates extends suspension of flights to Tehran
Emirates has extended the suspension of its passenger services to the Iran's capital city of Tehran until July 5, citing "regional situation". The earlier suspension for all Dubai flights to Tehran was until June 30. In an update on its official website, the carrier said passengers "connecting through Dubai with final destinations in Iran will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin until further notice". Meanwhile, Emirates services to Iraqi city of Baghdad will resume on July 1, and Basra flights on July 2. Travellers are urged to check official airline channels for regular updates, the airline said, adding that it is "closely monitoring the developments". Meanwhile, Etihad Airways has suspended flights to Israel until July 15. The carrier added that passengers "transiting through Abu Dhabi to connect to cancelled flights will not be accepted for travel from their point of origin". flydubai said it expects to resume its full network operations from July 1, pending final assessments. The airline had suspended flights to Iran, Iraq, Israel, Syria and Russia's St. Petersburg until June 30. Air Arabia has also suspended operations to Iran, Iraq, Russia, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan until June 30.
