Two in Sibu lose over RM300,000 to separate online scams
An elderly victim lost RM200,000 while a businesswoman in her 40s lost over RM110,000. — Bernama photo SIBU (July 9): A senior citizen here reported the loss of RM200,000 after falling victim to a non-existent online investment scheme. Sibu police chief ACP Zulkilpi Suhaili said the victim, in his 70s, had come across an advertisement on Facebook regarding the scheme. 'The victim was later contacted by two persons who introduced themselves as Timothy and Amy, who then added him to a WhatsApp group called 'Wealth Freedom KLSE'. 'They promised the victim high returns and convinced him to make two payments of RM100,000 each into a local bank account on June 25 and July 2,' he said in a statement today. Zulkipli said after transferring the money, the victim was shown fake investment profit statements to convince him of the scheme's legitimacy. However, the victim began sensing something was amiss when he was asked to pay an additional RM992,525 to supposedly redeem a 'lucky draw prize' involving shares of a company. 'He then lodged a police report and to date has not received any returns from his so-called investment,' said Zulkipli. In a separate case, Zulkipli said a businesswoman in her 40s lost over RM110,000 to a phishing scam after clicking on a link in an advertisement on Facebook regarding the sale of fruits. He said the victim's mobile phone suddenly shut down after she clicked on the link. 'Upon restarting the device, she found multiple unauthorised fund transfers had been made through her bank account and credit cards. 'A total of nine transactions were made to eight local bank accounts without her consent,' he said. Zulkipli said both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and urged the public not to click on dubious investment-related advertisements or links on social media, especially ones that promise high returns. 'Always verify the legitimacy of the companies through official channels such as Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission,' he said. online investment scam Sibu

US tariffs pose ‘economic earthquake' for SMEs
KUALA LUMPUR: The Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta) views the 25% tariff imposed by the US on Malaysian exports as a serious threat to the country's trade competitiveness and industrial base, especially for export-oriented SMEs that form the backbone of the domestic manufacturing ecosystem. Samenta national president Datuk William Ng said the new US tariff is the equivalent of an 'economic earthquake' for domestic SMEs that are significantly exposed to the US market. He said Samenta has consistently pointed out that Malaysia's headline economic growth often masks deeper structural weaknesses within the SME sector. 'The real paradox is our ability to register macro-level gains while most SMEs remain trapped in low-margin, low-scale operations – squeezed by rising costs, regulatory pressures, and now, geopolitical shocks. 'The imposition of US tariffs is a stark reminder of the urgent need to recalibrate our economic model to prioritise the long-term viability and competitiveness of our 1.5 million SMEs, with the creative and service economy at the heart of it,' he said. Ng stated that Samenta is fully committed to collaborating with the government to provide support to all SMEs, whether directly or indirectly impacted by the tariff. 'We acknowledge the government's continued pursuit of a 'balanced and mutually beneficial' trade resolution with Washington, but we need urgent and coordinated action to cushion the impact on impacted SMEs. 'Samenta is hopeful that the government will expedite the roll-out of previously announced targeted support measures, particularly the RM1 billion increase in SJPP guarantees, RM500 million in soft loans via development financial institutions, and the RM50 million boost to Matrade. 'These initiatives must be delivered quickly and with minimal red tape,' he said in a statement. Ng said more importantly, these relief measures must be extended to domestic, non-exporting businesses. The anticipated tailwinds from subdued exports and weaker domestic demand will affect the services sector in equal intensity, he said. 'In particular, we urge the government to pause all new and planned cost increases on SMEs, including the proposed rationalisation of petrol subsidy and incremental fees proposed by various agencies and local councils. 'As labour shortages remain one of the most pressing challenges, particularly in the services sector, we urge the government to urgently review and ease restrictions on the hiring of foreign workers in sectors such as food services, tourism, and logistics. 'With our export momentum set to face headwinds, supporting our service-based SMEs to absorb the slack will be crucial in maintaining our economic resilience,' Ng said.

Samenta warns US tariff threatens Malaysia's SMEs, trade competitiveness
Ng warns that the move poses a serious threat to Malaysia's trade competitiveness and industrial base, particularly to export-oriented SMEs, which form the backbone of the manufacturing sector. KUCHING (July 9): The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) has expressed deep concern over the United States government's decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Malaysian exports, set to take effect in August. In a statement, Samenta president Datuk William Ng warned that the move poses a serious threat to Malaysia's trade competitiveness and industrial base, particularly to export-oriented small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the manufacturing sector. He described the tariff as an 'economic earthquake' for SMEs heavily reliant on the US market. 'We acknowledge the government's continued pursuit of a 'balanced and mutually beneficial' trade resolution with Washington, DC, but we urgently need coordinated action to cushion the impact on impacted SMEs,' Ng said. As such, Samenta is urging the government to expedite the rollout of previously announced support initiatives, including a RM1 billion increase in Business Financing Guarantee Scheme (SJPP) loan guarantees, RM500 million in soft loans through development financial institutions, and a RM50 million boost to Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade). 'These initiatives must be delivered quickly and with minimal red-tape,' Ng emphasised. 'More importantly, these relief measures must be extended to domestic, non- exporting businesses, which will be equally affected by the anticipated tailwinds from subdued exports and weaker domestic demand.' He further urged the government to halt all new and planned cost increases on SMEs, including the proposed rationalisation of petrol subsidy and incremental fees by various agencies and local councils. Ng also highlighted persistent labour shortages, especially in service sectors like food and beverage, tourism, and logistics. In view of this, Samenta is calling on the government to urgently review and ease restrictions on the hiring of foreign workers to help service-based SMEs absorb economic slack amid export headwinds. 'As Samenta has consistently pointed out, Malaysia's headline economic growth often masks deeper structural weaknesses within the SME sector. 'The real paradox is our ability to register macro-level gains while most SMEs remain trapped in low-margin, low-scale operations, squeezed by rising costs, regulatory pressures, and now, geopolitical shocks,' said Ng. He also noted the imposition of US tariffs is a stark reminder of the urgent need to recalibrate Malaysia's economic model to prioritise the long-term viability and competitiveness of its 1.5 million SMEs, with the creative and service economy at the heart of it. 'Samenta remains fully committed to working hand-in-hand with the government to support all SMEs directly or indirectly affected by the tariff,' he added. Samenta US tariff William Ng
