Drought reveals rising land: South Africa's surprising connection to water loss
Researchers at the University of Bonn, Germany, have uncovered that certain regions in South Africa are gradually lifting, by as much as two millimetres a year, due to a phenomenon far removed from the hot mantle plumes previously thought to be responsible for such changes. Instead of deep-earth forces driving this uplift, the legs of science have turned to the immediate and pressing culprit: drought.
The groundbreaking study employs data accumulated through a vast network of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) base stations known as TrigNet, which has been observing subtle land movements across South Africa for over two decades. Current analyses indicate that when surface and underground water evaporate or deplete, the Earth's crust can rebound in a manner akin to a sponge expanding after being squeezed. This newly revealed elasticity of the land — a response to water loss — could have lasting implications for how scientists monitor and manage water in a warming world.
Detailed findings published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth illustrate a compelling correlation between drought-stricken regions and measurable land uplift. Between 2012 and 2020, an average uplift of six millimetres was recorded, consistent with declining water mass, particularly in areas experiencing severe drought. This pivotal research challenges long-held beliefs that attributed regional uplift predominantly to tectonic activity tied to mantle hotspots.
Dr. Makan Karegar, a key researcher in this study, alongside hydrologists and geodesists, matched the GPS data with climate records and findings from the GRACE satellite mission, which monitors changes in gravity caused by shifting water masses, to make their discovery. 'Groundwater adds weight to the land,' Karegar said. His research team found that as groundwater and surface water significantly diminished during prolonged dry spells, the land naturally lifted in response.
Further exploring this phenomenon, Dr. Christian Mielke from the same research team pointed out the potential applications of their findings: 'By measuring how much the land lifts during droughts, we can estimate how much water has been lost. This gives us a unique, independent method to track vital water resources, particularly underground reserves.'
The implications for countries like South Africa, where much of the water supply relies on underground aquifers, are profound. The urgent need for accurate water resource management has grown, especially following Cape Town's harrowing experience with 'Day Zero' in 2015, when the city faced the prospect of running entirely dry. By utilising existing GNSS data to monitor vertical land motion, the research indeed offers a cost-effective approach to preemptively manage water crisis.
As climate change continues to escalate, South African coastal cities such as Cape Town and Durban are already under siege from rising sea levels, eroding shorelines, and increasingly severe flooding. The study's findings highlight a complex interaction between drought and rising ground — while some areas may be somewhat shielded from rising sea levels, the diminishing water reserves remain a tantalising yet alarming dilemma. 'If I had to choose between a decreasing sea level rise at the coast versus drought in the interior, I would choose sea level as the least-worst option,' said Jasper Knight, a geoscientist at the University of Witwatersrand who reviewed the study.
This research not only reshapes perceptions surrounding South Africa's land dynamics but also underscores an urgent message: the land is responding to our choices regarding water use. As researchers continue to elucidate the nuances of changing climates, citizen awareness and policy integration concerning climate and ocean discussions, as highlighted by ocean governance policy researcher David Willima, become imperative. Properly linking these concerns could enable effective responses to one of the biggest challenges facing South Africa today — the disappearance of its water resources.

Kgalagadi lions now call Addo Elephant National Park home
Two male lions, previously from the Twee Rivieren section of Kgalagadi National Park, now call Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape home. The two, estimated to be around seven years-old, had been acclimatising to their new conditions in a boma in AENP for the past few weeks. They were released last week and early indications are that they are settling well into the landscape. Their arrival follows close on the heels of the introduction of two lionesses into the park at the beginning of March. The two-and-a-half year-old sisters were brought in from the !Khamab Kalahari Reserve on the south-eastern edge of the Kalahari. The new sets of genes are a valuable addition to the lion population in the Addo Elephant National Park, as they bring with them strong, healthy genes that will add to the genetic variety in the park. There are now nine lions in the main game viewing area and a further three in what is known as the Nyathi section of Addo. The two males are collared for ease of monitoring and so that the rangers and researchers can observe what habitats they use, their proximity to the other lions, other predators and which species they prey on. The collars will also enable management to reach a fine balance of managing the lion population carefully in relation to the size of the park and their impact on prey species. Their management forms part of a larger initiative to mimic natural processes that regulate lion social behaviour and population growth, which includes swapping individuals between parks to ensure constant introduction of new genes. At the same time two older males, known as Niklaas and Witwarm, were darted and moved to Mountain Zebra National Park outside Cradock. The two are first setting in a boma inside the park before released. Ntlathi is set to become the first black South African in space. "This slight budget cut means that South Africa's ability to compete on global markets is going to be delayed yet again." he said. The Soweto geologist uncovering the Earth's secrets
Tebogo Makhubela, a South African geologist recipient of one of the prestigious National Geographic 2025 Wayfinder Awards, dims the head lamp fixed on his safety helmet as he poses for a portrait inside the The Rising Star cave, in The Cradle of Humankind. In the 1997 action film "Dante's Peak", Pierce Brosnan plays the role of a volcanologist sent to investigate seismic activity beneath a long-dormant volcano. Years after its release, the story inspired South African Tebogo Makhubela to become a geologist, the 35-year-old said. Winner of one of the prestigious National Geographic 2025 Wayfinder awards, Makhubela leads a research team working to uncover ancient clues to human evolution. His turf lies below the surface of the Earth in the limestone caves of South Africa's Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage site about 50 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg. Speaking from inside The Rising Star cave, one of the numerous caves in the area, Makhubela said he and his colleagues have only "scratched the surface" of the site, which dates back five million years. In an unassuming savannah field, hidden under a rocky patch of grass, the cave is where scientists in 2013 discovered Homo naledi, an ancient human relative that lived about 300 000 years ago. "With this cave we've only studied 30 percent... To do the remaining 70 percent we need 20 years minimum," said Makhubela, wearing a dark green overall and a helmet fixed with a torchlight. And with many other caves to study, Makhubela's research isn't close to an end. "I will actually retire before we finish. Hence, I need to train a lot of students to take over from me." Makhubela, who lectures at the University of Johannesburg and supervises four PhD students, hopes more young scientists will join him on his mission -- one he believes is crucial to understanding the history of humankind and its environment. "Geology helps us understand Earth, our planet, how it works, how it was formed, its composition and its processes," he said, sitting on a rock next to his yellow backpack filled with notebooks, pens, measuring instruments and water. His own speciality is geochemistry and geochronology, or more simply, determining the age of fossils and environmental changes over time. One hurdle, he said, is that geology is not well known and some young people would rather "chase what is popular". "Right now we're living in the age of artificial intelligence. (But) you don't have to run and go study computer science or IT because you want to be relevant to the times," said the geologist. "If you're more passionate about natural science, go for it. Because if you do it well, there will be a place for you." Born and raised in Soweto, the sprawling township once home to Nelson Mandela, Makhubela was the first in his family to go to university. His mother never went to school and worked as a street vendor while his father moved away when he was 10, he said. As a bright young student, he was pressured to study engineering and work in South Africa's lucrative gold mining industry. But he decided on another path. "Curiosity inspires me, honestly. I have a lot of questions," he joked, describing what motivates him. And a decade after making that bold decision to forgo a future in mining and pursue his passion in geology, Makhubela is proud of his accomplishments. "I've got a very thriving, fulfilling career, one which is winning me international awards," he said.
