News182 days ago
John Abraham's Tehran, initially set for a 2023 release, will now premiere on OTT during the Independence Day week. The actors fans are disappointed with the move.
John Abraham's Tehran was slated for release in 2023. However, the film is finally set to release after a long haul. The actor, who generally prefers a theatre release for his films, surprised fans by announcing a direct OTT release for his film. While a section of fans shared their excitement, others expressed their disappointment at the OTT release of John's film. The film also stars Manushi Chhillar.
John Abraham's Tehran has been in the making for a while now. The film was initially set for release in 2023; however, it appears that the film will finally release this year. On July 31, the makers of Tehran revealed that John's upcoming geopolitical action-thriller will premiere on Zee5 via OTTplay Premium during the Independence Day week.

John Abraham fans took to the comment section and expressed their displeasure at Tehran's OTT release. They wrote, 'OTT Release", 'Action Abraham is Back", 'Kyun bhai . Aap toh kehte the ki Mai direct OTT release kabhi Nahi karunga", 'Why not releasing in theater", 'Why ott ???", 'Need it in big screen", 'Release in Cinema", 'This should be released in the theatres".
A Bollywood Hungama report had previously revealed the reason behind opting for OTT release for Tehran. It said, 'Tehran has a run time of less than two hours and moreover, it's not just a Hindi language film. To maintain authenticity, certain dialogues are also in Farsi and English. Hence, the makers realised that it would suit the OTT medium more." The makers are yet to confirm the same.
Interestingly, John Abraham recently spoke about why he is content staying on the big screen for now, with no interest in diving into the world of web series. He told Hindustan Times, 'To do OTT, you need a very big office setup. You need a lot of people working towards something, where you don't even own the IP of. You make a commission from the series and that goes into your overheads. Anybody who's doing OTT today, they'll tell you absolutely the same thing. So, I don't see sense in breaking sweat on doing these series."
That said, he's open to the idea, badmitting that if a compelling series comes his way and sparks his interest as a producer, he wouldn't hesitate to get on board. 'I would love to because I want to tell that story, not because I want to make a business model out of it. So, that's one reason why I'm not doing this as a producer yet."
When asked if he would ever act in OTT, the actor responds, 'Never say never, but at this point of time, I do not want to come on OTT as an actor for a series or an original film. I want to come on the big screen. In my head, I believe I was made for the big screen. I have a lot of respect for OTT channels because most of the content, at least internationally, and so much of the Indian content like Paatal Lok is outstanding. I have so much of respect for the space, but I don't see myself yet in it."
What is John Abraham's Tehran about?
Tehran is a high-stakes Hindi action-thriller headlined by John Abraham and Manushi Chhillar. Inspired by true events and set against the backdrop of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, the film delves into the shifting sands of international politics. It is directed by Arun Gopalan and backed by producers Dinesh Vijan, Sandeep Leyzell, and Shobhna Yadav, with a screenplay penned by Ritesh Shah and Ashish Prakash Verma.

Kathal: Where To Watch Sanya Malhotra's National Award-Winning Film

Last Updated: Sanya Malhotra's Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery won big at the 71st National Film Awards. If you haven't yet watched the satirical drama, here's your cue to stream it. Sanya Malhotra's Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery has won the prestigious National Award for Best Hindi Feature Film at the 71st National Film Awards. The press conference was held on August 1 by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It was organised to recognise the excellence in Indian cinema for the year 2023. The announcement was made in the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of State L Murugan and I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju. The ceremony was also live streamed for the public. Before Kathal receives the National Award at a ceremony scheduled later this year, now is the perfect time to revisit or discover this unique film. If you haven't yet watched the satirical drama, here's your cue to stream it. Below is everything you need to know about where to watch Kathal, and why it's a film that truly deserved the honour. Where To Watch Kathal Directed by Yashowardhan Mishra and written by Ashok Mishra, Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery premiered directly on Netflix on May 19, 2023. Bypassing the traditional theatrical route, the film proved that meaningful storytelling, strong performances, and a bold narrative can resonate deeply with audiences, even through an OTT release. Since its premiere, the film steadily built a strong word-of-mouth following on the streaming platform, praised for both its social relevance and its distinct tone. And now, after clinching a National Award, it stands tall as one of the most important Hindi films of recent years. If you're yet to watch it, it's available to stream anytime on Netflix. Kathal Plot Set in the fictional town of Moba, Kathal follows the story of Inspector Mahima Basor, brilliantly portrayed by Sanya Malhotra, who is assigned to solve the odd case of two jackfruits stolen from the garden of MLA Pateria. While the premise looks lighthearted and filled with comic elements, the narrative is so layered that it gradually unravels weightier themes such as caste discrimination, systematic negligence and human trafficking. Why Kathal Stands Out What makes Kathal more than just another quirky comedy is how it quietly holds up a mirror to our system, without ever losing its sense of humour. At the heart of it is Sanya Malhotra, playing a young police officer who isn't just dealing with a bizarre case of stolen jackfruits, but also the everyday weight of being a woman in uniform from a marginalised background. Through her, the film explores how deeply personal professional struggles can feel when you're constantly being underestimated or dismissed. But Kathal doesn't go down the heavy-handed route. Instead, it lets absurdity do the talking. Watching an entire police force scramble to recover two jackfruits for a powerful politician, while cases involving missing girls are barely acknowledged, feels oddly familiar and that's where the satire hits hard. The humour isn't just there for laughs; it's used smartly to point out what we, as a society, have come to accept without question. Kathal stands out because it chooses to be funny and fearless at the same time. It entertains, yes, but more importantly, it nudges you to think. Alongside starring Sanya Malhotra in the lead role, Kathal features Anant V Joshi, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav and Brijendra Kaka in other significant roles. Directed by Yashowardhan Mishra and written by Ashok Mishra the film is produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Guneet Monga and Achin Jain under the banners of Balaji Motion Pictures and Sikhya Entertainment. Son of Sardaar 2 Box Office Collection Day 1: Ajay Devgn's comedy struggles with Rs 6.75 crore debut amid poor reviews

Ajay Devgn's latest comedy outing, Son of Sardaar 2, co-starring Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, and Deepak Dobriyal in lead roles, finally hit theatres on Friday. The film opened to a decent response at the box office, collecting around Rs 6.75 crore (India net) on its first day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The film recorded an overall Day 1 occupancy of 22.56%, starting with just 10.24% during morning shows, improving to 17.88% in the afternoon, 21.84% in the evening, and peaking at 40.27% during night shows, nearly double its early-day performance. In terms of regional performance, Tier-2 cities like Lucknow and Jaipur led the occupancy charts with 39% and 37%, respectively. Meanwhile, traditional strongholds for Hindi films like Delhi-NCR and Mumbai lagged slightly behind, recording 30.50% and 20.25% occupancy respectively. What's striking, however, is how Son of Sardaar 2 opened significantly lower than Ajay's last release, another sequel, Raid 2, which had a solid opening day collection of Rs 19.25 crore. In comparison, the new film's first-day figure is also less than half of Shaitaan, Ajay's recent horror blockbuster, which had opened at Rs 14.75 crore. That said, it still fared better than Maa, starring Kajol, which managed Rs 4.5 crore on its opening day last month. Also Read | Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi's Dhadak 2 seethes with the rage of filmmaker Shazia Iqbal Despite the modest opening, Son of Sardaar 2 did manage to outperform its immediate competition, Shazia Iqbal's Dhadak 2, which collected just Rs 3.35 crore on its opening day, according to Sacnilk. Both films, however, are struggling to draw audiences in the face of stiff competition from Mohit Suri's romantic musical Saiyaara, which is currently in its second week and has already amassed a staggering Rs 285.75 crore. Interestingly, Son of Sardaar 2 was initially scheduled for release last week. However, in light of Saiyaara's unexpected box office dominance, Ajay chose to delay the release by a week to avoid any sort of indirect clash, a strategic move in contrast to 2012, when the original Son of Sardaar released opposite Yash Raj Films' Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Back then, despite immense pressure, Ajay went ahead with the clash, which ended up affecting both films' long-term box office performance. Whether the sequel can sustain and grow in the coming days remains to be seen.
