Rangers vs Panathinaikos player ratings: 8/10 rescue act, the visionary, dream debut and drowsy display
Despite home goalkeeper Jack Butland being forced into numerous saves in the opening throws of the game, it was 18-year-old Findlay Curtis that swung the game in Rangers favour, smashing home from long range in the 52nd minute to secure a narrow win on Russell Martin's first competitive game in charge of the Glasgow giants.
Panathinaikos were dealt an even bigger blow just six minutes after Curtis' strike when midfielder Georgios Vagiannidis was sent off for his second booking of the game, and the Light Blues took full advantage in the 78th minute when debutant Djeidi Gassama lashed home from just outside the area minutes just three minutes after his introduction to the field.
Rangers will now take a short break from competitive action as they return to Ibrox this weekend to face EFL Championship promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough as part of their pre-season schedule, before they head to Athens for next week's second leg against Rui Vitória's side on Wednesday 30 July.

And with a favourable play-off draw handing Celts a golden chance at Champions League qualification, McCowan insists they're ready to rise to the challenge. The Parkhead side discovered on Monday they'll face either FC Kairat Almaty or Slovan Bratislava for a place back at Europe's top table. It's a draw Brendan Rodgers would've snapped your hand off for after avoiding dangerous ties against Basel and Sturm Graz. Celtic have nothing to fear against Slovan after dismantling the Slovakians 5-1 in last season's Champions League opener - their biggest-ever win in the competition. Meanwhile, Almaty's only European adventure was finishing fourth in their 2021/22 Europa Conference League group. But with £40million on the line, it's still a nerve-wracking two-legged shootout with absolutely no margin for error. Rodgers knows his troops will need to show a far more ruthless streak than they did against St Mirren. Luckily, McCowan was there to dig them out of a hole. And the midfielder is adamant they'll only get stronger heading into the playoffs. The ex-Dundee star said: 'We're just at the start. You have a good pre-season, you work really hard, obviously away in different countries and whatever, getting your fitness levels high. 'It's about coming into the game on Sunday and implementing that and letting that carry on throughout the games to come. 'You've got Champions League qualifiers to come and it's just about the next step, the next game, the next performance. 'The boys know that and it's just about staying level-headed with that.' That all-important first leg at Celtic Park is just a fortnight away. But if it were tomorrow? McCowan insists they'd be more than ready to go. He said: 'I'm sure we will be, aye. I mean if you were to ask us if we played it this midweek, I'm sure we'd all be ready. 'So it makes no difference being in two weeks. If anything, I think we'll be more prepared. 'These players play under massive pressure all the time. I keep repeating it, but it's what playing at this club takes. 'You need to be ready for that pressure, you need to have your chest out, your head high and go and show that you're a Celtic player.' Ambitious boss Rodgers is desperate to leave his mark on Europe. And Celtic have already shown they can go toe-to-toe with the elite, after pushing Bayern Munich all the way in last season's knockouts. McCowan knows it's time to prove it all over again. He said: 'I think we showed that last year, it's about proving it again. There's always a demand for more at this club. 'The more games under our belt within the season, the quicker we'll get up to speed and the performance levels will hopefully credit points on the board throughout the Champions League phases and the qualifiers and whatever it may be, so we just need to keep performing well.' McCowan cut a calm figure in front of the cameras after his match-winning heroics. But deep down, the 27-year-old will be buzzing to have kick-started the bid for five-in-a-row. Just when it looked like the Buddies would spoil the party, McCowan popped up to drill a clinical low strike into the corner. He smiled: 'Aye, it feels good. Good to start the season off with a win. It's always important to go off to a good start. 'It's what you're here to do. You're here to score goals and help the team win games. Luckily enough, I've done that today. 'It's just one of those ones, you want to create energy, you want to create positivity when you're coming off the bench and I think at the point we made the changes, they probably needed it. 'Some fresh legs, stuff like that, so that's what the squad's there for.' "It could have been Jimmy [James Forrest] coming off the bench and scoring like he did at the end of last season. "It was just me there today and I'm sure through the season there'll be more moments like that. 'Your performance levels are always the thing you look at the most. 'Even if you came away from that game at 0-0, you know your performance level was good, you know you created so many chances in the game. 'But the thing that you come away from after the game with a good performance is the three points and the boys are chuffed with that. 'We had a ton of chances. We had enough chances to go and win probably two football matches. 'Really unlucky with a few hitting the post, obviously a goal chopped off as well. 'Listen on another day, you probably come away scoring two or three, maybe more. 'But at the end of the day, it's three points and that's what we're glad with.' Celtic face Aberdeen and Falkirk before that playoff blockbuster. But McCowan made it clear this weekend's trip to Pittodrie is at the forefront of their minds. He added: 'It's an old cliche but Aberdeen on Sunday again, you hit that with a good performance, then you go into the qualifiers feeling ready, feeling up to scratch and you want to go into them as positive as you can.' Benjamin Sesko set 48-hour deadline as Newcastle have no plans to replicate Man Utd deal
Newcastle United have reportedly informed RB Leipzig of a deadline in terms of their interest in a possible move for striker Benjamin Sesko, who is also a target for Manchester United Newcastle United have provided a 48-hour deadline regarding their interest in Benjamin Sesko. Eddie Howe's side have identified the RB Leipzig striker as a target as the club look to add reinforcements in attack. The Magpies, who are preparing for a Champions League campaign, currently have limited options up front. First-choice striker Alexander Isak has been the subject of a rejected bid worth up to £120million from Liverpool, while the expiry of Callum Wilson 's contract leaves prospect William Osula as the club's only other recognised centre-forward. Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Brentford star Yoane Wissa, who scored 19 league goals last term. However, the club are determined not to allow their pursuit of Leipzig forward Sesko to emulate Manchester United's earlier transfer strategy. talkSPORT have reported that Newcastle have informed Leipzig of their desire for clarity in terms of Sesko's next steps by Wednesday. It is said that the club are confident of reaching an agreement with the German side. Leipzig are thought to value the 22-year-old striker at around £70million. Sesko is also a target for Man United and had been on Arsenal's radar prior to the Gunners signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. However, the report also claimed that Newcastle feel they must have a clear idea of Sesko's intentions before the latter half of the week. It is said that Leipzig have yet to receive any formal offers for Sesko, despite recent reports. Newcastle's unwillingness to find themselves in a transfer saga is contrary to Man United's approach to signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Despite the club's public interest in Mbeumo, Man United had several offers turned down before the striker finally arrived at Old Trafford in a deal worth up to £71m. Newcastle wish to avoid replicating a similar scenario with Sesko. The Isak situation provides Newcastle with extra motivation to accelerate negotiations for Sesko and any other transfer targets. Aside from potentially losing a star player, Howe will want to ensure any new recruits have time to settle before the start of an important season for the club. Newcastle reportedly value their star forward at £150m and turned down an initial £110m offer from Liverpool last week. Sky Sports spotted the striker arriving at Newcastle's training ground on Monday, having spent time training with former side Real Sociedad. When asked if he thought Isak would report back to the club as the squad prepared to return from their pre-season tour of Asia, Newcastle boss Howe said: "Of course I'd like him to be (there), but whether he will I don't know at this moment in time. We have been here with the time difference, preparing for training and for games. Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home." Isak scored 27 goals across all competitions as Newcastle finally ended their long wait for silverware by winning the Carabao Cup and secured a Champions League spot by finishing fifth in the Premier League. He was brought by Newcastle in for around £63m in August 2022. Meanwhile, Sesko scored 21 goals in 45 games for Leipzig, including four goals in the Champions League. The centre-forward is one of the most sought-after strikers in European football, having thrived during his spells in Austria and Germany. Newcastle have welcomed winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55m and secured a loan move for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale so far this summer. In terms of outgoings, the club have recouped some money through the sales of Lloyd Kelly and Sean Longstaff to Juventus and Leeds United, respectively.
