Sunil Gavaskar
Mumbai:
One can never be tired of listening to anecdotes revolving around the life of
Sunil Gavaskar
. It was, therefore, interesting to hear a few tales of Gavaskar during the legendary opening batsman's 76th birthday celebrations, organised by the Legends' Club at the Cricket Club of India on Wednesday evening.
Yajurvindra Singh recalled an incident during the 1979 Lord's Test between India and England when a steward refused entry
to
Gavaskar at the iconic Lord's Cricket Stadium as the cricketing great didn't have a 'pass,' even though he was a superstar by then. "It so happened that Gavaskar had promised passes for the Lord's Test. So, he came out of the Lord's gate to give the passes to his friend while wearing slippers.

However, afterwards, the steward at Lord's refused to let Gavaskar in. So, I went there and I told that security guard: 'This is Mr Gavaskar and he's going to be opening for us. He needs to come in!' (However), till he didn't have a ticket or a pass, the steward wasn't going to let him in at Lord's. And
Sunil
had naturally forgotten his pass.
So, I had to ring up the secretary of the club. He came, and we finally made that chap understand. Although people were taking (Gavaskar's) autograph. The British guy knew exactly who he (Gavaskar) was, but he harassed him right there at the gate."
In the same Lord's Test later, Gavaskar made fun of the whole incident in his own inimitable way. "We were playing against the MCC at Lord's. I remember that Dickie Bird was the umpire.

To indulge in some fun, Sunil had got one of those ugly masks, which he wore while standing at second slip. So, Dickie Bird (the umpire) told him that 'Mr Gavaskar, you are disturbing the batsman.' Gavaskar responded to him by saying: 'Which rule says that I'm not allowed to wear a mask while standing at second slip.
' 'No, you are disturbing everybody,' Bird replied. 'I'm not disturbing anyone. The batsman is concentrating on that (the other) side,' Gavaskar retorted.
'No, you are disturbing me!' Bird replied! That, you know, was Sunil.'
Virat Kohli on why did he retire from Test cricket: 'It's time when you...'
For the record, Gavaskar scored 42 & 59 in that Test, which was drawn.
Who is Sunny?
Yajurvindra revealed a recent meeting of his and Gavaskar's with
Amitabh Bachchan
, in which the duo asked the Bollywood icon to resolve an old 'feud' between them about who held the 'rights' to the name 'Sunny' since both were fondly called by this name.
"I told Amitabh Bachchan: 'We always have this problem that both of us are called 'Sunny.'
We have been trying to solve this fight over who actually is Sunny for a long, long time. I've always told him that you are Sunny because the Englishmen couldn't call you Sunil, whereas I've been Sunny, because my name Yajurvindra is to do with the Sun God.' We decided that the learned Bachchan would be the right man to approach (with this issue) and settle this issue for once and all.
Unfortunately, we did so at Sunil's annual party," the 72-year-old said.
Bachchan, of course, wisely chose to let the ball 'zip past his off-stump,' so to say. "Bachchan was very smart. He didn't make any decision. Although I told him that I watched him bowl left-arm spin in a benefit match, etc. I tried everything, but to no avail because it was Sunil's party. But I did tell Amitabh that he was very fortunate that Sunil didn't take up acting, although he did do one movie, because this chap imitates you, and can definitely imitate anyone anywhere in the world.
I said that if he had taken up acting, you'd have had to play cricket!" chuckled Yajurvindra.

Jamai No. 1 actress Simaran Kaur champions authenticity and balance online; says 'Social media is for us, not the other way round'

Actor Simaran Kaur , known for winning hearts with her charm and talent in Jamai No.1, is refreshingly candid when it comes to social media. With a massive fanbase that admires her for both her performances and authenticity, Simaran has a grounded perspective on how digital platforms impact actors and the entertainment industry. 'Social media is undoubtedly important for an actor — it's how we stay connected with our fans,' Simaran says. 'There are so many people who shower love, blessings, and support. That connection is beautiful. But I consciously limit my screen time. There's so much more to life that demands attention, and I've even set screen usage limits for myself.' While she acknowledges the significance of having a digital presence, she is equally wary of the pitfalls. 'It can quickly become addictive if you're not careful. But I've never let it control me. I always remind myself — social media is for us; we are not for social media,' she states firmly, reflecting her mindful approach. Simaran also addresses the growing industry trend of judging actors based on follower count. 'People often assume that a high follower count is equal to talent. But I don't agree. An actor should be hired for their skill, dedication, and the work they've done — not for their online numbers,' she says. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tetange: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo 'Craft should always take precedence over digital popularity.' On the topic of oversharing, Simaran believes in striking a healthy balance. 'Some people put everything out there — every moment becomes content. I believe in boundaries. Not everything needs to be on display. But again, it's a personal choice, and everyone uses social media in their own way.' Her guiding principle, however, remains clear: authenticity. 'I've never tried to be someone I'm not. I don't strategize my posts or overthink them. I share what feels right, when it feels right. The key is to stay real — that's what truly connects.' Whether it's through her acting, her voice work as Nobita, or her popular dance reels, Simaran Kaur stands out for her sincerity. In an age of curated perfection, her realness offers a breath of fresh air — reminding us that staying true to oneself never goes out of style. Simaran Kaur: I got my first love letter in school

India vs England, 5th Test: Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna become brothers of destruction, script new milestone on Day 2

Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna (AP Photo) Day Two of the fifth Test between India and England produced a breathtaking spectacle of seam, swing, and collapses, with 15 wickets falling, the most in a single day's play in the ongoing series. This number overtook the previous high of 14 wickets, which fell on Day Four of the second Test at Lord's. What started as a day favouring the batters, with England's openers blazing away in the morning session, quickly turned into a bowler's paradise. India's pace attack, led by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, sparked a stunning turnaround. England, who were 109 for 1 at lunch chasing India's first-innings total of 224, were bowled out for 247 in the final session. Siraj and Prasidh both took four wickets apiece, as India clawed back into the contest with relentless discipline and hostile seam bowling. The drama didn't end there. India's second innings began under fading light and rising tension, and the visitors struck quickly again. KL Rahul fell cheaply, and Sai Sudharsan was trapped in front late in the day. Draw India win England win Too close to call By stumps, India had reached 75 for two wickets in just 18 overs, taking the total to 15 wickets for the day, a statistic that reflects not just the quality of bowling, but the unpredictability of the pitch and match situation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Featuring Brigade Ebony™ at Brigade Showcase 2025 | Aug 8–10, Sheraton Grand, Brigade Gateway Brigade Group Learn More Undo This dramatic swing in momentum echoed the gripping nature of the series itself, where no session has felt entirely safe for either side. The seam-friendly conditions at The Oval, combined with high-stakes pressure in a series decider, brought out both the brilliance of the pacers and the vulnerability of top-order batters. With three days still to go and conditions continuing to assist the bowlers, this record of 15 wickets in a day might not stand for long. 'SSMB29' update: No birthday surprise for Mahesh Babu fans as Rajamouli skips traditional release plans

Picture Credit: X It is common practice among South Indian filmmakers to release a motion poster on an actor's birthday as a treat to fans. With superstar Mahesh Babu teaming up with SS Rajamouli for their much-anticipated film, expectations were high that the makers would unveil something special on the 'Guntur Kaaram' actor's birthday. However, this year, it appears that fans will have to wait a little longer. No birthday glimpse this year According to a report by India Today, director SS Rajamouli has taken a deliberate decision to skip the traditional birthday release, focusing instead on building something far more grand in scale and scope. It has been reported that the makers discussed releasing a title teaser or a concept poster for Mahesh 's birthday, but the ace director did not want the release to be rushed just to meet a date for the momentary hype. No mass poster moments SS Rajamouli, after the global success of 'RRR', is reportedly creating an international-level action-adventure film that aims to appeal not just to Telugu cinema fans but to audiences worldwide. It is also said that the film won't be a typical mass film with a poster with fiery eyes and a punchline. The project is still in deep pre-production, with multiple test shoots, costume and makeup trials, and stunt choreography underway. A grand project is in the works While fans may be momentarily disheartened, it is expected to be worth the wait as Rajamouli reportedly has something massive planned for the reveal on his own timeline and wants the first glimpse to shake up not just Indian social media but film conversations worldwide. Alongside Mahesh Babu, 'SSMB29' also stars Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran and is expected to release in 2027.
