Iraq repatriates over 230 families from Syria ISIS detention camp
Also in Syria Kurdish-led forces dismantle suspected ISIS cell in al-Hol Rojava Kurds fear Kurdish forces integration with Syria state amid surge in minority violence Unidentified gunmen target SDF in Deir ez-Zor US repatriates child from Rojava ISIS detention camp A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Iraqi government on Thursday repatriated over 230 families from the notorious al-Hol camp in northeast Syria (Rojava) housing people with links to the Islamic State (ISIS), the Kurdish-led Rojava administration said. 'The al-Hol camp administration on Thursday evacuated 233 Iraqi families (812 individuals) in coordination between the [US-led] international coalition forces, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria [DAANES], and the Iraqi government,' the Rojava administration said in a statement. The latest repatriations marked the 28th batch of Iraqis to leave the camp, headed to the al-Jada camp in the northern Nineveh province for rehabilitation, according to DAANES. 'More people wishing to leave the camps in north and east Syria will be repatriated in the coming period,' it added. Thousands of individuals with suspected ISIS ties are held in al-Hol and Roj camps, both located in Rojava's Hasaka province and controlled by the Kurdish-led and US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Al-Hol is the larger of the two, housing nearly 30,000 people as of Thursday, according to data obtained by Rudaw English from Sheikhmous Ahmed, who supervises the camps in Rojava. Al-Hol has become notorious for its poor conditions and has been described as a breeding ground for terrorism. Since ISIS's territorial defeat in 2019, tens of thousands of people linked to the group - mostly Iraqis and Syrians - have been held there, alongside others from across the world who traveled to join the jihadists' so-called caliphate. Iraq has been repatriating its citizens from the camps in groups and providing rehabilitation, and is planning to host a conference in Geneva in September to encourage more countries to follow suit. Many other countries, however, remain reluctant to take back their nationals over fears of extremist ideology spreading at home. Baghdad has set a goal of repatriating all Iraqi citizens from camps in Rojava by 2027.

Canada intends to recognize Palestinian state at UN General Assembly
Ottawa – Canada plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday, a dramatic policy shift that was immediately rejected by Israel. Carney said the move was necessary to preserve hopes of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a long-standing Canadian goal that was 'being eroded before our eyes.' 'Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025,' the prime minister said. It makes Canada the third country, following recent announcements by France and the United Kingdom, that could recognize a Palestinian state in September. Israel blasted Canada's announcement as part of a 'distorted campaign of international pressure.' Asked by reporters if there was a scenario where Canada could change its position before the UN meeting, Carney said: 'there's a scenario (but) possibly one that I can't imagine.' Canada's intention 'is predicated on the Palestinian Authority's commitment to much-needed reforms,' Carney said, referring to the government body led by President Mahmud Abbas, which has civil authority in parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Carney also said it was also predicated on Abbas's pledge to 'hold general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part, and to demilitarize the Palestinian state.' – Israel rejects move – With Wednesday's announcement, Carney positioned Canada alongside France, after President Emmanuel Macron said his country would formally recognize a Palestinian state during the UN meeting, the most powerful European nation to announce such a move. The Israeli embassy in Ottawa said 'recognizing a Palestinian state in the absence of accountable government, functioning institutions, or benevolent leadership, rewards and legitimizes the monstrous barbarity of Hamas on October 7, 2023.' PA's Abbas welcomed the announcement as a 'historic' decision, while France said the countries would work together 'to revive the prospect of peace in the region.' Canada's plan goes a step further than this week's announcement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer said the UK will formally recognize the State of Palestine in September unless Israel takes various 'substantive steps,' including agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza. – Two-state solution – Carney stressed that Canada has been an unwavering member of the group of nations that hoped a two-state solution 'would be achieved as part of a peace process built around a negotiated settlement between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority.' 'Regrettably, this approach is no longer tenable,' he said, citing 'Hamas terrorism' and the group's 'longstanding violent rejection of Israel's right to exist.' The peace process has also been eroded by the expansion of Israeli settlements across the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, Carney said. The prime minister said a two-state solution was growing increasingly remote, with a vote in Israel's parliament 'calling for the annexation of the West Bank,' as well as Israel's 'ongoing failure' to prevent humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

US imposes sanctions on shipping empire tied to Iranian leaders
Washington – The United States on Wednesday slapped sanctions on a shipping empire controlled by the son of a top political advisor to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Treasury Department said the sanctions were being imposed on companies and vessels operated by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of Ali Shamkhani, who has been subject to US sanctions since 2020. It said Hossein operates a fleet of more than 50 tankers and container ships that transport Iranian and Russian oil and petroleum products, generating tens of billions of dollars in profit. 'The Shamkhani family's shipping empire highlights how the Iranian regime elites leverage their positions to accrue massive wealth and fund the regime's dangerous behavior,' Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. The Treasury Department said more than 115 individuals, corporate entities and vessels were being sanctioned, including companies based in Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and other countries. 'The over 115 sanctions issued today are the largest to-date since the Trump Administration implemented our campaign of maximum pressure on Iran,' Bessent said. The Treasury Department said Hossein's network 'comprises a vast fleet of vessels, ship management firms, and front companies… that launder billions in profits from global sales of Iranian and Russian crude oil and other petroleum products, most often to buyers in China.' The State Department said separately that it was imposing sanctions on 20 entities, including companies in India, Indonesia, Turkey and the UAE, for their involvement in the trade of Iranian petroleum, and 10 vessels. The sanctions are being imposed more than a month after the United States attacked Iran's nuclear program, hitting a uranium enrichment facility at Fordo, south of Tehran, as well as nuclear sites in Isfahan and Natanz. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said the sanctions are intended to 'disrupt the Iranian regime's ability to fund its destabilizing activities, including its nuclear program, support for terrorist groups, and oppression of its own people.' 'As President (Donald) Trump has said, any country or person who chooses to purchase Iranian oil or petrochemicals exposes themselves to the risk of US sanctions and will not be allowed to conduct business with the United States,' Bruce said. She said the United States will continue to put 'maximum pressure' on Tehran until it 'accepts a deal that advances regional peace and stability and in which Iran forgoes all aspirations of a nuclear weapon.'
