Managers are using AI to determine raises, promotions, layoffs

The Hill7 hours ago
(NewsNation) — Artificial intelligence (AI) isn't just changing workflows, it's deciding who moves up and who gets the boot.
According to a new Resume Builder survey of 1,342 U.S. managers, 6 in 10 said they use AI tools to make decisions about their direct reports.
Even more striking is that most managers who use AI said they've turned to it for high-stakes calls, such as determining raises, promotions and even who to let go.
Yet two-thirds of those using AI admitted they haven't received training on how to manage people with it, the survey found.
ChatGPT was the most popular tool among AI-using managers, with 53% citing it as their go-to. Nearly 30% said they primarily use Microsoft's Copilot, while 16% said they mostly use Google's Gemini.
Other surveys have shown that managers are more likely than their employees to use AI, but the latest findings suggest a dystopian future where leadership loses its human touch entirely.
'While AI can support data-driven insights, it lacks context, empathy, and judgment,' Stacie Haller, chief career advisor at Resume Builder, warned in a statement.
Haller said it's essential not to lose the 'people' in 'people management,' pointing out that AI reflects the data it's given, which can be flawed and manipulated.
The concern is real enough that lawmakers have introduced legislation to limit AI's role in employment decisions.
In March, a California state senator introduced the 'No Robo Bosses Act,' aimed at preventing employers from letting AI make key decisions — such as hiring, firing or promotions — without human oversight.
'AI must remain a tool controlled by humans, not the other way around,' California State Sen. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, said in a release announcing the legislation.
While generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini have only been mainstream for a few years, they're already reshaping how people work — and how they look for work.
Recent college graduates have taken notice, as the rise of AI chips away at entry-level white collar roles, helping create one of the toughest job markets in years.
Meanwhile, employers are getting buried in AI-generated resumes.
The number of applications submitted on LinkedIn has surged more than 45% in the past year, and the platform is now clocking an average of 11,000 applications a minute, according to the New York Times.
Resume Builder's survey doesn't detail exactly how managers are using AI to automate personnel decisions. After all, there's a big difference between organizing metrics for a performance review and asking ChatGPT: 'Should I fire Steve?'

Elon Musk issues stark one-word warning on skyrocketing $36T debt

Elon Musk issues stark one-word warning on skyrocketing $36T debt originally appeared on TheStreet. Billionaires, including the world's wealthiest man Elon Musk, couldn't stop reacting as the U.S. national debt hits record high. As per the Treasury Department, the U.S. debt stood at $36.2 trillion on June 3. "Scary," the tycoon reacted on X. Musk's one-word response to the monumental debt encapsulates what nearly everyone has been feeling. The tech tycoon isn't the only billionaire worried about the precarious condition. Tyler Winklevoss, who co-founded the Gemini crypto exchange along with his twin brother Cameron Winklevoss, also reacted to the development. The billionaire crypto entrepreneur, however, seemed to offer a rather unique way out of the condition: Buy bitcoin Though Winklevoss's advice is quite uncommon, it is not entirely new. Even Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), a political heavyweight in the crypto circle, thinks on similar lines. Lummis, a leading pro-crypto voice in the U.S. Senate, is well-known for her BITCOIN Act that, once legislated, will codify President Donald Trump's March executive order to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve. Sen. Lummis thinks Bitcoin is the solution to the soaring national debt too. On March 27, she shared the stage with Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR) founder Michael Saylor when she claimed: If it [Bitcoin] is held for 20 years, pursuant to the best modeling available, we can reduce our national debt by half. The views of the likes of Winklevoss and Sen. Lummis regarding Bitcoin's viability to resolve the debt crisis haven't found any wide support so far. Nonetheless, Trump has emerged as a strong supporter of Bitcoin during his second term. As per Bitcoin Treasuries, the U.S. holds most Bitcoin — 198,012 BTC worth $21 billion at the time of writing — among all the countries. As per Kraken, Bitcoin was trading at $105,704.14 at press time. This Stock Is Shaping the Future of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but Is It a Buy Right Now?

Alphabet is responsible for key discoveries in the development of artificial intelligence as we know it. Google Cloud is Alphabet's fastest-growing segment, increasing revenue 28% year over year in the first quarter. Alphabet is currently trading at a lower valuation than every other "Magnificent Seven" stock and the S&P 500. 10 stocks we like better than Alphabet › Artificial intelligence (AI) has been one of the most discussed subjects over the past few years. It's far from a new technology, but with the explosion in popularity of generative AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, it has soared into the mainstream. The AI landscape is layered and evolving daily. Some companies are laying the groundwork and foundation for developing the technology, others are using this foundation to build their own tools, and some are perfectly content with simply using tools, like the average user. When it comes to companies shaping the future of AI, one of the first to come to mind is Google's parent company, Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL), which has been one of the key players in the development of AI as we know it today. What makes Alphabet so important to AI development starts with its research. Through its companies DeepMind and Google Research, Alphabet has been responsible for some of AI's biggest breakthroughs. It developed the transformer architecture that powers large language models (LLMs); it developed an AI program called AlphaFold that predicts protein structures, allowing for faster drug and vaccine developments; and its AlphaGo program was one of the first examples of how good AI could be at solving complex issues that many thought required human reasoning. Alphabet operates in all three phases of the AI pipeline: research and development, training and deployment, and real-world applications (Gemini, Google Search, etc.). This helps keep operations streamlined, which may not be the case with companies that rely on other companies for infrastructure or AI models. For example, OpenAI relies on Microsoft for cloud infrastructure. Some people have voiced concerns that AI tools could harm Alphabet's core business, Google Search, by reducing the need to click on search ads when users can type the same question into a tool like ChatGPT and receive a more conversational answer. In theory, it's a fair concern, but there haven't been any signs of this tangibly harming Alphabet's business. Alphabet continues to be a money machine, bringing in $90.2 billion in revenue in the first quarter, up 12% year over year. This growth was led by Google Cloud, which increased its revenue by 28% year over year to $12.3 billion. It probably won't ever catch up to Google Search (56% of its Q1 revenue), but it's a high-growth area that's beginning to carry more of its own weight. Arguably the best thing about Alphabet's stock right now is how undervalued it seems. It's trading at 18.5 times its forward earnings, which is below the 21.7 times the S&P 500 is trading at, and well below what the other "Magnificent Seven" companies are trading at today. For a company that has consistently grown through the years, the pessimism toward Alphabet's stock seems a bit overblown. It has top-tier in-house AI capabilities, a fast-growing cloud business (third in market share behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure), and a portfolio full of industry-leading companies like Google, YouTube, and Waymo. I wouldn't invest in the stock expecting to double your money in a couple of years, but if you're a long-term investor, you likely won't regret investing at Alphabet's current prices. If you're concerned about current volatility and market conditions, consider dollar-cost averaging your way into a stake. The stock is a bargain.
