Jorhat celebrates 42nd District Day with cultural splendour

Dibrugarh: Jorhat continued the celebrations for its 42nd District Day for the second day on Tuesday. The day-long festivities started with the hoisting of 42 flags in front of Jorhat DC's office, symbolising each year of the district's existence as an independent administrative unit.
Jorhat, which was carved out of Sivasagar as a separate district on July 1, 1983, has emerged as one of Assam's most significant cultural and educational centres over the past four decades. The transformation from a sub-division to a full-fledged district has been marked by substantial development in infrastructure, education, and cultural preservation.
The morning celebration began with the rendition of the national anthem, setting the tone for the day's proceedings.
District Commissioner Jay Shivani delivered the opening address, highlighting the district's achievements and outlining the vision for its continued growth and development.
"Jorhat's journey over the past four decades has been remarkable. From tea gardens to educational institutions, from cultural preservation to technological advancements, the district exemplifies balanced growth. Our focus remains on sustainable development while honouring our roots," DC Shivani said.

The event featured vibrant cultural performances that reflected the rich artistic traditions of the state. Audiences were treated to melodious chorus performances, graceful Sattriya dance presentations, colourful Bihu dance displays, and captivating Bhaona performances. In a symbolic gesture, saplings were presented to distinguished guests. DC Shivani planted an orchid in the office compound in honour of the legendary Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
The celebration witnessed the distinguished presence of several prominent political leaders who addressed the gathering. Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, Dergaon MLA Bhabendra Nath Bharali, and Titabar MLA Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah delivered addresses that paid heartfelt tributes to the distinguished personalities who have contributed to Jorhat's development over the years.
"Jorhat has always been a beacon of culture, education, and progress in Assam.
The district's contribution to literature, performing arts, and educational excellence has been unparalleled. On this special day, we honour not just our administrative milestone but also the countless individuals who have made Jorhat what it is today," Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami said.
Titabar MLA Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah highlighted the district's educational significance, stating, "Jorhat's legacy in higher education, particularly through institutions like Jorhat Engineering College and Assam Agricultural University, has made it an educational hub for the entire northeastern region. Our district continues to produce scholars, artists, and leaders who contribute to the nation's progress.

The event also witnessed the presence of Padma Shri Jadav Payeng, popularly known as 'The Forest Man of India,' whose inspiring journey of single-handedly creating a forest has brought international recognition to Assam.

India needs to tread carefully in its trade negotiations with the United States, keeping in view the terms proposed under the latter's trade deal with Vietnam, trade experts say. As per the new trade pact announced by President Donald Trump , the US will impose a flat 20% tariff, besides a 40% tariff on transshipped goods from Vietnam. Goa govt's single scholarship portal to hasten student aid
Panaji: State govt on Wednesday introduced a single portal where all students in Goa, from the school level to the university level, can apply for scholarships across departments at one point. Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that the portal will ease the process of applying for scholarship benefits for students, both for state and central schemes. This will eliminate the need to fill physical forms and expedite the process of receiving benefits for students, he said. Sawant, who also holds the education portfolio, said the portal will benefit 50,000 students in Goa who are seeking aid to support their tuition fees from 'KG to PG level'. 'For the first time, we are launching the CM's scholarship portal. We saw that students have to fill forms physically and therefore we brought in this reform. We tested this portal last year, and it is ready for launch now. All scholarship schemes of social welfare, tribal welfare, directorate of education, and directorate of higher education will be available at a single point for students now. 'The portal will be the single point to apply for benefits for SC, ST, OBC, and EWS category students. Last year, we saw that 50% of the students who were eligible for the benefits did not apply at all. It is especially seen in our villages that students struggle to pay even Rs 20,000 as their institute fees. I realised it after a law college student came to me saying that he is unable to pay his fees. This portal will expedite the disbursement of benefits to such needy students.' In the case of schemes being implemented through central govt, the aid will be released as received from the Centre. 'A student has to go to the portal and upload all documents. We send the documents to the institution for verification. Once verification is done, the department gives sanction for release of the funds. Even Goa students studying nursing and pursuing other education outside the state can apply through the portal,' the CM said. He said that the labour welfare scholarship available for children of those working in the private sector will also be linked to this portal within the next 45 days. 'The education of no child in Goa will not stop because they are not able to pay the fees. We have launched the portal to fast track the aid,' Sawant said.
