Gurgaon: The appointment of newly elected MCG mayor
Raj Rani Malhotra
's husband Tilakraj Malhotra as an adviser in her office is raising eyebrows and drawing political heat. Congress on Tuesday said it will submit a formal memorandum to the deputy commissioner next week to challenge the legality and propriety of the appointment of Tilakraj, who happens to be a former BJP district president.

Tilakraj was named as an adviser to the mayor in a letter issued on April 21 by MCG commissioner Ashok Garg. The letter said that his position was "honorary", with no financial benefits.
Senior Congress functionary Pankaj Dawar said the appointment was a blatant case of "nepotism" and "parivarvaad" – a term often used by the BJP leadership to criticise the Gandhi family for what they call dynastic politics. "There is no provision that allows a mayor to appoint a family member, particularly a spouse, to an advisory role — honorary or otherwise.
This move violates the principles of fair governance and may not stand scrutiny under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act," Dawar said on Tuesday.
The controversy comes at a time when the mayor's election is under scrutiny over allegations that she and her Congress rival submitted fake caste certificates. MCG's mayoral position was reserved for a woman candidate from the backward class (A) category in civic polls held this March.
Punjab and Haryana high court earlier this month issued a notice to the mayor over a petition challenging her election. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 22.
Raj Rani and Tilakraj refused to comment on the controversy on Tuesday, but the mayor told TOI that her husband has not yet assumed responsibilities as adviser.
Dawar alleged that such an appointment had broader implications on gender representation in politics.

"It is detrimental to the idea of women's empowerment. Today, the mayor has appointed her husband as an adviser. Tomorrow, women councillors might follow suit. This will erode the accountability of elected representatives," he said.
He said BJP claimed to be opposed to dynastic politics, but this appointment "exposes" their "true nature".
"The mayor, who was imposed on Gurgaon as a dummy candidate with no administrative experience and no agenda during the campaign, has now handed over decision-making responsibilities to her husband.
This is not governance, it is betrayal," Dawar said.
Raj Rani (66) trounced her Congress rival Seema Pahuja by a margin of 1.8 lakh votes to become the city's mayor.
A BJP source said "discontent" over Tilakraj's appointment was not limited to the opposition. "A faction within the party is unhappy with the development, They believe it was an avoidable misstep that has handed an unnecessary talking point to the opposition," the source said.

Edappadi Palaniswami likely to meet PM Modi in Tiruchi

Chennai: AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tiruchi during the latter's two-day visit to Tamil Nadu on July 26 and 27. This would be the first formal meeting between the two leaders since the AIADMK renewed its alliance with the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to arrive in Tamil Nadu on the evening of July 26 after completing an official visit to the Maldives. He is expected to land at the Tuticorin airport at 7.50 p.m. and will inaugurate the expanded Tuticorin airport and proceed to Tiruchi for an overnight stay. On July 27, PM Modi will attend the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Ariyalur district. Following the event, he is scheduled to depart for New Delhi from Tiruchi at 2.25 p.m. According to sources, Edappadi Palaniswami is expected to meet the Prime Minister either late on July 26 or on the morning of July 27 in Tiruchi. While AIADMK has not officially confirmed the meeting, the party has rescheduled EPS's pre-announced campaign events -- originally planned in Karaikudi, Tirupattur, and Sivaganga on July 26 -- to July 29. The party, in a statement, did not mention the reason for the rescheduling, but political observers believe it is to facilitate the meeting with PM Modi. This meeting gains significance as all alliance negotiations between the AIADMK and BJP had so far been handled primarily by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. EPS and PM Modi had not met directly since the fallout during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when both parties contested separately. Earlier, Amit Shah had declared that the BJP would be part of the alliance led by AIADMK in the 2026 Assembly polls. However, EPS later countered that the AIADMK would form the government on its own with a clear majority, triggering confusion among the cadre of both parties. The proposed meeting is also expected to cover other strategic issues, including EPS's reported request for the Union government to fast-track Central agency investigations against DMK leaders. If confirmed, this would mark the first personal interaction between PM Modi and Palaniswami since the former began his third consecutive term as the Prime Minister.

Bengaluru bandh over GST notices to small vendors called off after CM Siddaramaiah meets trade bodies

Small vendors and traders in Bengaluru, who have been protesting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) notices issued by the state commercial tax department to those conducting transactions of over ₹ 40 lakh per annum through UPI, have called off their strike on Thursday following a meeting with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. 'Trade bodies confirmed they have not supported any bandhs and agreed to withdraw planned protests following the chief minister's assurances. The government reiterated its focus on empowering small traders and boosting purchasing power through various programmes,' the chief minister's office said after the meeting with trade bodies, including the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), on Wednesday. The proposed GST on small vendors—such as bakeries, tea and coffee sellers, chaat vendors, etc.—had sparked concerns over the last fortnight. Many had stopped UPI transactions and sought cash following rumours that authorities were likely to retrospectively impose GST on their previous sales. At the meeting, trade representatives raised concerns over the confusion regarding GST for small traders, including loan amounts and personal transactions, and urged the state government to allow traders to directly resolve issues with the commercial tax department. The traders also sought a helpline, awareness programmes to clarify GST regulations, and a 'one-time waiver of old tax arrears'. Siddaramaiah clarified at the meeting that 'notices were issued only to traders with UPI transactions exceeding Rs 40 lakh' to trigger GST registrations and announced that old tax arrears would not be pursued if traders register under the GST and start paying the tax in the future. Siddaramaiah also told the trade bodies that 'no taxes would be collected from traders dealing in exempt goods like milk, vegetables, meat, and fruits, but those liable under the law must comply'. Chief Minister Shri @siddaramaiah held a meeting with representatives of trade unions today regarding the recent GST notices issued to small businesses, and later addressed the media to clarify the issue and share the government's stance. • Representatives from various trade… — CM of Karnataka (@CMofKarnataka) July 23, 2025 'Karnataka ranks second in India for GST collection and shares 50 per cent of the revenue with the central government, as decided by the GST Council chaired by the Union finance minister,' Siddaramaiah said. The representatives of the trade bodies were told that 'only 9,000 notices have been issued and spread over 2-3 years which comes to around 18,000 notices'. The state government's move to issue GST notices to small-scale traders had resulted in a war of words between the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP and JD(S) in Karnataka. 'With the Congress government's treasury running dry, the CM has unleashed the commercial taxes department to issue these notices in a bid to raise money. The notices served on street vendors and small businesses are completely illegal. The government must immediately stop issuing them and withdraw those already sent,' B Y Vijayendra, state BJP president, said at the party office this week. Former BJP chief minister Basavaraj Bommai also accused Siddaramaiah of trying to blame the Centre for the GST notices to small vendors. 'The GST Council is a joint responsibility of both the state and the Centre, but the major responsibility lies with the state. The implementation and administration are handled by the state's commercial tax department. Issuing notices to small traders has now disrupted their businesses severely,' Bommai said. 'As the finance minister, Siddaramaiah must resolve this issue and also ensure a lawful and practical framework is provided for traders to pay taxes in the future,' he added. Earlier, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had claimed that the GST notices were being issued by the Centre, but the blame for it was being planted on the state. 'The BJP government at the Centre fixed a turnover limit of ₹ 40 lakh for the GST registration and also instructed the state governments to follow it. The GST office has issued notices to about 14,000 traders, including tender coconut, flower, vegetable vendors. Our leader Rahul Gandhi had opposed the GST in the past,' Shivakumar stated. Asked if notices had been issued in view of the tax collection targets given by Siddaramaiah, he said, 'The officials are following the rules set by the Centre's GST Council. These notices have been issued due to the pressure from the Central GST Council.'

From Layover To Legacy: How PM Modis 1993 UK Stopover Ignited A Diaspora Powerhouse

New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in London, chants of 'Modi, Modi', 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', and 'Vande Mataram' echoed through the air, a testament to a relationship that extends far beyond politics. For India's diaspora, this moment symbolized not just national pride but decades of connection with a leader who had embraced them long before reaching the country's highest office. PM Modi's deep and strategic engagement with the Indian diaspora has evolved into a cornerstone of India's foreign policy, especially during his second term. But this approach didn't begin in Delhi; it was seeded much earlier. Back in 1993, as BJP's General Secretary in Gujarat, Modi made an unplanned stopover in the UK while returning from the US Despite the brief nature of the visit, he met local Indian families in Croydon and Hastings, interacted with diaspora media such as Sunrise Radio and Naya Padkar, and even rode the London Underground to connect with everyday Indians. These early gestures sowed the seeds of a diaspora diplomacy that would blossom over the years. By 1999, following the BJP's landslide electoral victory, Modi returned to the UK for a five-day tour. Now a key national leader and the party's global face, he had already demonstrated his organizational strength in Gujarat, where the BJP expanded from 1,000 to 16,000 grassroots units under his leadership. His visit culminated in a landmark address at the Swaminarayan School in Neasden, hosted by the Overseas Friends of BJP (UK). Braving a cold drizzle, a packed hall of supporters listened as he articulated the BJP's vision, rooted in nationalism, tradition, and democracy. Attendees included British political figures such as Lord Navnit Dholakia and MP Barry Gardiner. In his speeches, Modi highlighted India's democratic values and positioned the BJP as more than a political party, as a civilizational movement embracing modernity, religion, and rooted culture. He was also honoured by the Lohana Mahajan community for his growing influence and his outreach to Indians abroad. In 2000, on his way to the World Hindu Conference in the Caribbean and the UN Peace Summit in the US, Modi again stopped in London. Soon to be appointed BJP General Secretary (Organisation), a role previously held by only two others since the Jana Sangh era, Modi met UK Deputy PM John Prescott to discuss Asia's political landscape and the rising threat of terrorism. In a powerful moment of foresight, a year before 9/11, he warned, 'Terrorism is an evil against humanity, whether in India, the Middle East, or Northern Ireland.' He also briefed diaspora leaders on Jammu and Kashmir's security situation, reinforcing his reputation as a leader with global awareness and local empathy. In August 2003, following the devastating Bhuj earthquake, Modi returned to the UK as Chief Minister of Gujarat to personally thank the diaspora for their support. Speaking to a packed Wembley Conference Centre, he said, 'You are the real friends of Gujarat. I have come to repay a debt of friendship.' His emotional tribute resonated deeply with the overseas community. During that visit, he also inaugurated Shakti Hall at the Gujarat Samachar and Asian Voice offices and delivered a speech that is still quoted fondly, 'IT is not just Information Technology, it is India Today. BT is not Biotechnology, it is Bharat Today. IT plus IT equals India Tomorrow.' He also met then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and political leaders along the River Thames, reinforcing the importance of diaspora engagement as part of India's broader diplomatic outreach. Even in 2011, during Gujarat's golden jubilee, Modi connected with the UK diaspora via video conference. Addressing an elite gathering in London, he declared, 'The name Gujarat and development are synonymous. Gujarat is creating history.' He also announced the construction of Mahatma Mandir using soil from 18,000 villages, and from diaspora communities around the world, including the UK. 'For me, the diaspora has never been a passive audience,' he said. 'It is a vital partner in India's journey.' Today, as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi continues to celebrate the global Indian community as ambassadors of Indian culture, democracy, and development. His enduring relationship with the diaspora reflects not only emotional resonance but strategic depth, making overseas Indians a vital force in shaping India's global identity.
