Review needed for east-west highway after tragic accident, says Saarani
The Perak Mentri Besar stated that state infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has been tasked with preparing a paper to outline the necessary improvements for the road.
"It's high time we look into the alignment and the condition of the road.
"The concession for the highway has long expired, for about 40 years," he said in a press conference after opening the Perak Export Day here on Wednesday (June 12).
"The highway was built during (Malaysia's second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's time, to stop incursion by communists from Thailand," he said, adding that some stretches of the road could no longer be patched up.
On June 9, some 15 individuals, including Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students, were killed after a bus lost control and flipped on its side on the highway.
On Tuesday (June 10), Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi posted on Facebook that the site of the tragic accident was a key section set for rehabilitation in 2025, with an allocation of RM55mil.
Saarani also said that a new hospital would be required in Gerik due to the high frequency of accidents on the highway.
"A separate paper will be prepared by the state health committee A. Sivanesan on this," he said.
"Both papers will be forwarded to the Federal Government for their consideration," he said, adding that he would also speak to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about the proposals required to improve the situation near the highway.
He said that another suggestion brought up during the weekly state executive council meeting included having relevant mobile units situated in the middle stretch of the highway to provide faster assistance.
"The road is long.
"It would take about an hour to reach the middle stretch of the highway (from Gerik town) if an emergency is to occur there," he said, adding that accident victims could be stuck inside an ambulance on the road for up to three hours.

Federal Government to invest RM1.4bil in palm oil replanting under 13MP
JOHOR BARU: The Federal Government plans to invest approximately RM1.4bil in its palm oil replanting initiative as part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), according to Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. The initiative, set to be implemented over the next five years, aims to reinforce Malaysia's position as a leading palm oil producer globally. "The 13MP debate will commence on Monday (Aug 4), allowing MPs to provide feedback," Johari explained. "For the Plantation and Commodities Ministry, there is a clear focus by the Government to enhance replanting efforts among smallholders." He stated that RM1.4bil would be progressively allocated over five years to encourage smallholders, particularly those with ageing trees, to replant. Johari made these remarks while discussing the 13MP during the Johor Baru Umno division annual meeting. He highlighted that the initiative is expected to further boost Malaysia's export potential in the global market. Anwar reaffirms federal commitment to Sabah's rights and sovereignty
KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government remains steadfast in protecting Sabah's rights as an integral part of Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim declared. Speaking at the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen's Day closing ceremony, he reiterated the government's resolve to uphold national sovereignty against any threats. Anwar stressed that Malaysia is ready to pursue legal action in international courts if necessary to defend Sabah's rights. 'Why are we doing this? Because this is our country — Sabah is part of Malaysia. We are spending tens of millions of Ringgit, maybe a hundred million Ringgit, to defend our rights. We will not allow even an inch of our land or sea to be encroached upon,' he said. The Prime Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen Sabah's development, including resolving issues under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Key initiatives include doubling the interim special grant for Sabah from RM300 million to RM600 million this year and allocating RM10 billion to complete the Pan Borneo Highway. Anwar acknowledged delays in the highway project under previous administrations but assured progress under the current government. 'Maybe it's not visible yet, not completed, but at least we've approved it and the work packages are in progress,' he said.
