Review needed for east-west highway after tragic accident, says Saarani
A thorough review of the East-West Highway or the Gerik-Jeli Road is needed to improve its condition, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The Perak Mentri Besar stated that state infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has been tasked with preparing a paper to outline the necessary improvements for the road. "It's high time we look into the alignment and the condition of the road. "The concession for the highway has long expired, for about 40 years," he said in a press conference after opening the Perak Export Day here on Wednesday (June 12). "The highway was built during (Malaysia's second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's time, to stop incursion by communists from Thailand," he said, adding that some stretches of the road could no longer be patched up. On June 9, some 15 individuals, including Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students, were killed after a bus lost control and flipped on its side on the highway. On Tuesday (June 10), Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi posted on Facebook that the site of the tragic accident was a key section set for rehabilitation in 2025, with an allocation of RM55mil. Saarani also said that a new hospital would be required in Gerik due to the high frequency of accidents on the highway. "A separate paper will be prepared by the state health committee A. Sivanesan on this," he said. "Both papers will be forwarded to the Federal Government for their consideration," he said, adding that he would also speak to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about the proposals required to improve the situation near the highway. He said that another suggestion brought up during the weekly state executive council meeting included having relevant mobile units situated in the middle stretch of the highway to provide faster assistance. "The road is long. "It would take about an hour to reach the middle stretch of the highway (from Gerik town) if an emergency is to occur there," he said, adding that accident victims could be stuck inside an ambulance on the road for up to three hours.

New Bailey Bridge At Sungai Liat Opens Today
TANJONG MALIM, April 29 (Bernama) -- The Bailey Bridge, which was built to temporarily replace the Sungai Liat Bridge in Felda Sungai Klah which collapsed on April 20 and leaving hundreds stranded, was opened for traffic at 6 pm today. State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the 42.6-metre long single-lane Bailey bridge was opened in one direction to all vehicles with a permitted load limit of not more than 20 tonnes. He said the installation work for the Bailey bridge was carried out on April 23 and was completed in quick time last Sunday (April 27). "Construction work of the temporary (Bailey Bridge), which is a crucial route linking Felda Sungai Klah and Felda Residence Hotspring as well as Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Tisong, has been fully completed. "Hence, motorists and other road users can use the (new bridge) route but should heed instructions and signage when passing through," he said when flagging off traffic at the opening ceremony of the Bailey Bridge at Sungai Liat which was opened to the public from today. The collapse of the Sungai Liat Bridge (culvert failure due to current surge and debris) had cut off access and exit routes connecting Felda Residence Hotspring, Kampung Tisong (which has 500 orang asli) and Buyong Mas Sanctuary Campsite, which left 136 people, including 81 students from a polytechnic in the three areas involved, stranded. On a separate matter, Mohammad Nizar said the Perak Public Works Department (JKR) has managed to distribute 137 maintenance projects involving a total cost of RM15.285 million, mainly maintenance work involved roads, street lights and traffic lights. "We implemented an online draw lot system to (tender) all 137 projects from the state allocation involving 104 civil works and 33 electrical works. "We hope all 137 contractors who have been appointed will be able to complete the work according to the specifications, cost and time period set," he said.

Perak govt proposes tahfiz centres be reclassified under lower water tariff code
IPOH: The Perak government is prepared to submit a proposal to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) to reclassify tahfiz centres under a different category for water service tariff, following complaints of rising monthly water bills at the centres. State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the power to amend or set water service tariffs lies with the relevant minister, based on recommendations made by SPAN. 'According to the implementation of the water supply rate adjustment under the Water Services Industry (Rates for Water Supply Services) (State of Perak) (Amendment) Regulations 2024, Second Schedule (Regulation 3), regarding Usage Type, tahfiz centres are now uniformly categorised across Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan under the 'School' category with Non-Domestic Usage Type, subject to tariff code 21. 'The state government takes note of the proposal to reclassify water tariff for tahfiz centres and is ready to forward it to SPAN for consideration,' he said during the winding up session on the Royal Address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today. On April 18, Selama assemblyman Mohd Akmal Kamarudin urged the state government to hold engagement sessions with tahfiz school administrators statewide following the water tariff code revision by the Perak Water Board which has affected these institutions. He said the change from tariff code 41, which covered houses of worship and charitable institutions, to code 21, a non-domestic category, has placed a financial burden on tahfiz management. The change in tariff code has allegedly resulted in a monthly water bill increase of between RM500 and RM1,000.
