Erik ten Hag has already 'annoyed and upset' ex-Arsenal star Granit Xhaka
Erik ten Hag has upset Granit Xhaka with his period of silence after being named the new Bayer Leverkusen boss which has caused the Arsenal star to question his future
Erik ten Hag has already managed to annoy Granit Xhaka since being appointed as Bayer Leverkusen boss, according to reports in Germany.
The Dutch coach returned to the dugout after several months out of the game following his Manchester United sacking. He's inherited a squad from Xabi Alonso that won the Bundesliga title this time last year with Xhaka a crucial cog in their midfield.
The ex-Arsenal man has proved a huge hit in Germany but he and the new manager have not struck it off on the right note. Bild claim that Ten Hag made a deliberate effort to give his new Leverkusen players time and space before touching base for the first time.
However this approach has not been universally well received with Xhaka among those to take issue with the new manager's idea. Ten Hag only made contact with the former Arsenal midfielder three weeks after his appointment. That lack of communication has seen the Swiss star question his future.
Ten Hag has been keen to underlined how important he felt the 32-year-old would be to his plans moving forward, but the period of silence looks to have backfire on the new manager.
Xhaka was an integral part of Alonso's remarkable Bundesliga-winning side that went unbeaten all year and claimed the German Cup. He has a contract at the BayArena until 2028 but AC Milan are circling. It's claimed a deal could be sealed if Milan make an offer in the region of £12.8million, despite Leverkusen initially holding out for a fee of £34m.
The German side have already seen a host of their leading lights leave, putting Ten Hag on the back foot as he begins his tenure. Florian Wirtz has left for Liverpool in a British-record deal that has banked the club more than £100m.
Jeremie Frimpong has also joined him in moving to Anfield whilst defensive star Jonathan Tah has moved to arch rivals Bayern Munich on a free when his contract expired. It does leave Leverkusen with money to spend however after finishing second in the Bundesliga.
Ten Hag had been tipped to return to Ajax, only for him to reject the Eredivisie outfit in favour of a move to Leverkusen when they came calling. He signed a two-year contract and will look to prove himself once again after a poor end to his spell in charge in Manchester.

Arsenal star Mikel Arteta sold for £9m linked with shock Premier League return
A former Arsenal star Mikel Arteta sold for just £9million, could make a surprise transfer back to the Premier League, according to reports. While no new signings have been confirmed yet, Arsenal have been busy this summer transfer window, especially with regards to their midfield. They are set to buy Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and Christian Norgaard from Brentford, who will replace the released Thomas Partey and Jorginho. Another Premier League side overhauling their midfield is newly-promoted Sunderland who have the difficult task of replacing Jobe Bellingham, who was sold to Borussia Dortmund. To do so, it has been widely-reported that the Black Cats will pay a club-record £30.5m to sign Habib Diarra from Strasbourg. The highly-rated 21-year-old was also a target for Leeds, Brighton and Everton, and notably scored for Senegal in their historic win over England earlier this month. But French outlet RMC Sport claim that Sunderland are also interested in signing Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi who spent two years at the Emirates. Guendouzi knows Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris well having worked with him at Lorient but it remains to be seen whether the France international would consider a transfer. The 26-year-old only moved to Lazio on a permanent deal last summer and is considered a key player, but the Serie A club may be forced to sell due its financial situation. Signed by Unai Emery in 2018 for £7m, Guendouzi quickly established himself in Arsenal's first-team despite his tender years, going onto make 82 appearances for the club in two seasons. Appearances: 82 Goals: 1 Assists: 5 Yellow cards: 20 Red Cards: 1 It was expected that he would become a key player for the Gunners for many years to come but he fell out with Arteta after multiple disciplinary issues on the training ground. More Trending The final straw came in June 2020 following a post-match altercation with Brighton's Neal Maupay, during which he grabbed the striker's throat, with Arteta exiling Guendouzi from training. Guendouzi would never again play for Arsenal, loaned out to Hertha Berlin and Marseille before leaving for good in 2022, and upon departing north London said: 'I will never forget any minute spent with the Gunners jersey. 'I will never forget the Emirates Stadium. I will never forget the fans. I won't forget the city. I will never forget everything I've been through here. I will never forget that my only will was to defend with pride Arsenal colours. 'Thanks to all of those who believed in me during my time here, during the good and the bad moments. I can only wish the best to the club and its fan who deserve so much, trust me! 'Goodbye Arsenal, I will never forget you and will be a Gooner forever.' Spirit Mixer produces 25-1 Northumberland Plate surprise
Bred in the purple as a son of Frankel and owner Jeff Smith's Group One-winning mare Arabian Queen, Spirit Mixer was delivered with his challenge in the home straight and knuckled down to get the better Dancing In Paris by a neck under a delighted Rob Hornby, who travelled north for a solitary ride. Spirit Mixer comes out on top in the Northumberland Plate! The son of Frankel digs deep to take the prize at the third attempt, getting the better of Dancing In Paris on the run for home for @rob_hornby18 and @AndrewBalding2 at @NewcastleRaces! — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 28, 2025 'He was never a 25-1 shot in my head. I've won big races on him before and he was coming in off the back of a really good run at Goodwood,' said the jockey. 'I could have gone to Windsor and had four or five rides, but I wanted to come and ride him. He's a horse that's done no harm to me and it's fantastic to get that sort of reward today. 'There's a great crowd here today – I don't usually make the trek up north this far! I put it in my Sat Nav and it's just over five hours to get home, so this will make it a bit easier.' Jockey Rob Hornby with Spirit Mixer after winning the Northumberland Plate (Scott Heppell/PA) He added: 'He's such a cool horse, he's seven years old now and a beautifully-bred homebred of Mr Smith's. He's just thriving and really enjoying his racing at his tender age. 'The race went pretty smooth. I thought I was jostling for the lead early enough, but he got into a battle and outstayed them then inside the last furlong. 'It's important to be riding winners on Saturdays in these big races and I've been fortunate enough to win a July Cup in these colours (on Alcohol Free), they mean a great deal to me, as does riding winners for Kingsclere. 'What a joy he is to own and to train and to ride.'
