David Moyes learned of OBE at grandson's nativity play
The former Manchester United and West Ham boss was formally made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by avid football fan the Prince of Wales during a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.
Reflecting on when he learned of the honour, in December, the former Celtic and Preston player told the PA news agency: 'I was actually at my grandson's nativity and I'd got a call from the Home Office.
'My mother-in-law wasn't well, she was dying at the time, and we hadn't opened up the mail for a wee while – you know, we'd been concentrating on my mother-in-law.

'I had to say to my wife, 'Can you check and see if I've had a message here?'
'I didn't believe them. I can sometimes get quite a lot of phone calls which you don't always believe.
'I went back, we checked, and I've got to say it was a big moment for both me and my wife. It was emotional.'
Moyes was in charge of West Ham from 2017-2018 and then 2019-2024, the highlight of his second stint coming when he guided the Hammers to 2023 Europa Conference League glory – their first major trophy in 43 years.
He suspected his success at the London club was a key part of him making the New Year Honours list.

'Bringing a trophy to West Ham, I think was huge, and I've been really fortunate that I've been able to manage and stay in the game for a long time, which in itself is something which is not easy to do in the league which is seen as the best league in the world – it's not easy to have longevity in it,' he said.
The Glaswegian, 62, managed Everton from 2002-2013 and returned to the Merseyside team earlier this year.
Moyes said Aston Villa supporter William congratulated him during the ceremony on his work at Everton.
The father-of-two told PA: 'He actually congratulated me on Everton and was praising for especially the way things have turned around in the second half of the season.
'I had said that I thought his side were doing remarkably well.'

Villa finished sixth in the Premier League, with Everton in 13th place, having been just one point above the relegation zone when Moyes took over in January.
The Prince of Wales often attends Villa games and has been photographed with his son Prince George at their matches.
Moyes added: 'He actually commented that it's great that he's seen them, and he's trying to enjoy all the good times at the moment with Aston Villa.
'He takes his sons, which is great – I think in many ways it shows that the royal family are very much part of the people as well and want to do normal things in life.'
Moyes has overseen the third-most Premier Leagues matches as a manager, behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

Graham Potter has insisted Lucas Paqueta is 'happy and committed' to West Ham after the Brazil midfielder was cleared of alleged breaches of the Football Association's betting regulations. Paqueta's lawyer Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level, said the case had taken a heavy toll on Paqueta and effectively cost him a Premier League title winner's medal. He was on the brink of a £85m move to City when the charges were announced in August 2023. Campbell said: 'Lucas' life has basically been on hold for the last two years. He woke up every morning with the fear that this could be the day when his career was going to be over. Of course, Lucas is delighted with the outcome of the commission - but what shouldn't be forgotten is that there is an alternative universe where he moves to Manchester City and now has a Premier League winner's medal. 'The strain he has been under since the charges were announced in August 2023 has been incredible. That's something that shouldn't be forgotten in all of this. This case has come at a considerable cost to Lucas, both as a person and as a professional footballer.' Potter said there was little doubt about how difficult the process has been for Paqueta. 'You can imagine how hard it was on a personal level for him, having to fight those allegations, which he's done,' he said. 'The club have supported him through that. 'But again, you forget these guys are Premier League footballers competing at the highest level and to have that as well in the background was an incredible challenge for him. 'It's been a really tough period of his life and his career, so it's a credit to him and his family and everybody connected with him and the support he's had, that he's come through. 'Obviously, if that's a benefit to him, then it's going to be a benefit to us, the team and the club.' Potter, who has signed former Newcastle striker Callum Wilson on a free transfer, confirmed Michail Antonio will not be part of his first team squad after recovering from his car crash. The Jamaica striker, 35, faced a potential career-ending leg operation after a car crash in December but played for his adopted nation in this summer's Gold Cup. He is now out of contract.
