‘Misleading': Election Commission Fact-Checks Kharge's Post On Bihar Voter List Revision
The ECI dubbed the Kharge's claim as "misleading" and said that there were no change in the instructions of SIR that is being carried out in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday fact-checked Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters' list in Bihar, who had claimed that the poll body has amended the process of voter verification from asking for documents to only filling a form without any documents citing a newspaper advertisement.
The ECI dubbed the Kharge's claim as 'misleading" and said that there were no change in the instructions of SIR that is being carried out in the state ahead of the assembly elections.
'The claim made in this post, that no document is required and only filling the form is sufficient, is misleading. There is no change in the instructions. SIR is being conducted as per the orders dated 24.06.2025. While submitting the filled enumeration form before 25th July 2025 is mandatory, the documents can be submitted at any time either before 25th July 2025 or during the claims and objections period," the ECI said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission's decision to initiate a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral roll in the run-up to the assembly elections later this year has triggered major political controversy. The opposition parties have been alleging that the BJP is trying to snatch voting rights from crores of people in Bihar.
On Sunday, the Congress President accused the BJP of conspiring to deprive the people of Bihar of their voter rights through the revision of electoral rolls and said the voters of the state would teach the saffron party a lesson for its attack on democracy and the Constitution.
He cited a new advertisement issued by the Election Commission (EC), urging the voters of Bihar to only fill a form under the SIR, and alleged that 'when people rise, BJP backtracks".
'With the support of the Election Commission, the master plan that the BJP had devised to deprive crores of people in Bihar of their voting rights now seems to be ensnaring the BJP itself," Kharge alleged in a post in Hindi on X.

'Why are people who have been voting election after election being asked to show their documents for voting? 'Forcibly depriving the poor, weak, deprived, Dalits, oppressed and backward people of their voting rights is the conspiracy of the BJP-RSS," he alleged.
The Congress chief claimed that nearly eight crore people will suffer because of the SIR.
'The responsibility to correct the voter list lies with the EC, not the public.
'When the pressure from the opposition, the public and civil society increased, the Election Commission hurriedly published these advertisements today, which state that now only a form needs to be filled and showing documents is not necessary," he claimed.
'This is part of the BJP's tactic to mislead and confuse the public. The truth is that the BJP has decided it will crush democracy at all costs. But when faced with public opposition, it cleverly takes a step back," the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha alleged.
Meanwhile, the ECI has explained the need for the SIR across India as its constitutional mandate to protect the integrity of electoral rolls. It decided to begin with Bihar since it is the first state where the next assembly election will be held later this year.
It said that the SIR is being implemented smoothly at the ground level with the active cooperation of the electors.
The EC added that all voters are directly made aware through more than 77,000 BLOs and 4 Lakh volunteers as well as 1.5 lakh BLAs appointed by all political parties.
'In accordance with Article 326, the orders of SIR dated 24 June 2025 clearly enable all eligible electors to be included while excluding ineligible electors after verification by the concerned ERO," the EC said.

Chandigarh launches inclusive education policy for kids with disabilities
The Chandigarh Administration on Friday rolled out its first comprehensive Education Policy for Children with Special Needs – 2025, aimed at ensuring barrier-free, dignified, and quality education for children with benchmark disabilities. The policy was launched at Punjab Raj Bhavan by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, who called it 'a strong initiative towards inclusiveness and the spirit of equality guaranteed by the Constitution'. Kataria underlined the social significance of the step, stating, 'the measure of the true progress of any society is how it empowers its weakest sections. This policy is not just limited to opening the doors of schools, it is also a means to bring out the inherent talent and potential of the children. Chandigarh is proud that we are strengthening the spirit of equal opportunity and inclusion in the field of education'. Framed in line with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the policy guarantees free and compulsory education in government and aided schools for children with disabilities up to the age of 18. For those unable to attend regular classes, home-based education will be provided, supported by a transport allowance and auxiliary services. Admissions have been made entirely non-discriminatory, with all inclusive neighbourhood schools required to admit disabled children. A three per cent reservation has also been set aside for them within the 25 per cent quota for economically weaker sections under the Right to Education Act. Private schools will now be obliged to admit students with special needs and provide tailored educational support. The framework mandates the appointment of trained special educators for inclusive classrooms, adapted curricula, Braille and large-print textbooks, sign language resources, and modified evaluation systems. Collaboration with special schools and integrated education centres will support children with severe disabilities, while vocational and skill training from Class 9 onwards will prepare them for independent livelihoods. To foster a sensitive learning environment, the policy calls for regular training and awareness programmes for teachers, parents and classmates. A grievance redressal committee in every school and a state-level monitoring body will oversee its implementation. Senior officials, including Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma, Principal Secretary to the Governor Vivek Pratap Singh, Education Secretary Prerna Puri and Director of School Education Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, were present at the launch. Officials said the new policy represents 'an inspirational effort to strengthen the values of social justice, inclusion and compassion' and carries the message that 'disability is not a limitation; with the right environment and opportunities, every child can make society proud with their talent'.

No funds from muzrai temples diverted: DGR
Mangaluru: Minister for health and family welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, expressed concern over the spread of false information accusing the govt of diverting revenue from endowment temples for other purposes. Stating that the govt utilises the revenue from muzrai temples exclusively for the development of religious shrines under the department, the minister said that a few organisations have been spreading malicious campaigns against the govt with a political agenda. TMC seeks timeline for talks on SIR, Sindoor
Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Friday sought a fixed timeline from the Centre for discussions on Bihar's special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and Operation Sindoor. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the party's deputy leader in Lok Sabha, made the demand during an all-party meeting convened by Speaker Om Birla where Union ministers Arjun Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju were present. Dastidar said the Speaker informed her that discussion on Operation Sindoor would begin Monday but did not commit to a timeframe to discuss SIR. According to her, the Speaker cited a UPA-era rule that stated: "EC, being an autonomous body, its functions cannot be discussed on the floor of the House." "Discussions on Operation Sindoor are important. We too want to know where the perpetrators went. But the discussions must include SIR. The UPA logic doesn't hold because EC has now become a BJP party office," Dastidar told reporters outside Parliament. "SIR is a dark shadow on our democracy. Overnight, eligible voters are being struck off voter rolls. This hits (at) the core of our democracy," she added. If the home ministry is trying to say that there are 56 lakh illegal voters in Bihar, where did they come from?"
