AIMIM leader arrested in Rs 1.5-lakh fake currency case, father cries conspiracy
An AIMIM leader was arrested in West Bengal's Asansol on Saturday in a fake currency case following a raid on his hotel room. However, the party's state unit claimed that Danish Aziz was expelled from the AIMIM last month.Police sources said Rs 1.5 lakh in fake currency were recovered, including 300 fake Rs 500 notes, along with 600 blank papers used for printing, colour dye and an iron machine from the hotel room. Aziz was arrested along with another accused, Mohammad Lal Khan.advertisementBoth have been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) - 213/25, 178, 179, 180, 181, 182, 318/4 and 3/5. They were produced before a court, where the police demanded 14 days of custody for further investigation and to track other members involved in the racket. However, the judge granted five days of police custody.
Reacting to his son's arrest, Aziz's father called it a "political conspiracy". He accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the arrest, claiming, "This arrest was made at the behest of the Trinamool Congress as my son was preparing to contest an election from the Asansol North assembly seat."He further said, "Asansol North has many minority voters and Danish Aziz's popularity was rising, which has become a threat to some political parties. That's why he has been trapped in a conspiracy."This is not the first time Aziz has been embroiled in a controversy. He was earlier arrested in a rape case of a woman from Jharkhand in West Bengal's Purulia district. The case is still pending in an Asansol court.Trending Reel

‘If found guilty, he should get maximum punishment': Father of Monojit Mishra, prime accused in Kolkata rape case, speaks out
Two days after Monojit Mishra was arrested in the Kolkata law college rape case, his father is still coming to terms with the news that his son has been accused of raping and assaulting a 24-year-old student for hours. A priest from Kalighat, Mishra's father (name withheld on request) said he was ashamed after hearing the news. 'We stay in a 6 x 8 ft room. We worked so hard and rose from the lower strata of society to make him a lawyer. It is hard to believe that my son has done it,' he said, speaking to The Indian Express over the phone. 'He is my son. I worked very hard to make him a lawyer. But I must say, if the judiciary, after seeing all the evidence, finds him to be guilty, he should be given the toughest punishment, the maximum punishment. I will accept it with my head bowed,' he added. Mishra, 31, the prime accused in the rape case, is among the four accused arrested. A former member of the ruling Trinamool Congress's (TMC's) student wing and a former president of its college unit, he allegedly wielded immense clout on the law college campus. The TMC has claimed that Mishra is no longer associated with the party. Asked if he would pursue the case for his son, Mishra's father said, 'I will not pursue the case or fight a legal battle. Frankly, I cannot afford it. It is a fact that as a father, one's duty is to do everything to see his son become something. What more can a father do? Then this happens.' Mishra's father said he and his son have been estranged for the last five years. 'We have not had any communication for the last five-six years. He is so busy. I live on my own money. Sometimes clients come enquiring about him, and I tell them this is not his chamber. Since this is his permanent address, his ATM cards and other things come. He collects it,' Mishra's father said. According to him, since school, Mishra had supported the TMC. 'Later, when he joined law college, he became a leader there. There was so much factionalism in the TMC in his college. There were cases and counter-cases…which is normal in college politics,' he added. Mishra's father said he loved 'being called 'Dada Dada' in college', liked it when students ran behind him, enjoyed felicitations, etc. 'I always wanted him to be a big lawyer. Now see what happened. Now, wherever I go, I fear people will point fingers at me,' he said. Ravik Bhattacharya is the Chief of Bureau of The Indian Express, Kolkata. EC Trying To Push NRC 'Through Backdoor'- TMC Blasts Poll Body, Alleges 'Nazi' Action
/ Jun 28, 2025, 02:06PM IST Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien has accused the Election Commission of launching a 'sinister' backdoor National Register of Citizens (NRC) under the guise of a special voter roll revision in Bihar. Comparing the required documentation to Nazi-era 'ancestor passes', O'Brien questioned the timing of the exercise just months before elections in Bihar—and warned that it may be extended to West Bengal. Citizens born after 2004, he claimed, would have to produce birth documents for themselves and both parents, or risk being struck off the voter list. Calling the move desperate and politically motivated, he alleged the EC is acting on BJP's behalf to influence results in states where they're losing ground. The INDIA bloc, he said, will raise this inside and outside Parliament. Is this a legitimate cleanup of electoral rolls—or a stealth NRC?#electioncommission #biharpolls #tmc #voterlist #tmcvsec #derekobrien #biharelections #nrcdebate #ecrevision #voterrollcontroversy #toi #toibharat #bharat #breakingnews #indianews
