Poland manager Probierz quits after Lewandowski refuses to play under him
Lewandowski, Poland's record goalscorer, said his trust had been betrayed and that he was very hurt by the way Probierz told him he was being replaced as the captain. The 36-year-old Barcelona striker said on Monday he received a short call from Probierz as he was putting his children to bed and that a statement about him losing the captaincy appeared soon after on the Polish Football Association website.
Probierz decided to replace Lewandowski as captain with the Inter midfielder Piotr Zielinski. Poland went on to suffer an embarrassing 2-1 defeat in Finland on Tuesday, to put their World Cup qualification hopes into jeopardy.
'I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach,' Probierz said. 'Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.'
Lewandowski, who has a record 158 caps and 85 goals, is arguably the most outstanding player in Polish football history. He pulled out of last Friday's friendly win over Moldova, citing tiredness from a La Liga title-winning season.
Probierz, who took over in September 2023 after the disappointing tenure of Fernando Santos, qualified for the 2024 European Championship but has since struggled. The Polish FA's president, Cezary Kulesza, had summoned Probierz on Wednesday to discuss the matter.

'I give coaches a lot of freedom, but with that comes responsibility,' Kulesza said. 'I expect results, first and foremost. These were difficult days for the fans of the national team.'

QB Teddy Bridgewater, 32 eyes return to NFL
August 5 - Former quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is leaving his position as head football coach at Miami Northwestern High School and seeking a return to the NFL, according to multiple media reports on Monday. Bridgewater's Miami Northwestern exit comes three weeks after he was suspended for allegedly providing impermissible benefits to his players, including Uber rides, meals and recovery services. He also asked for fans to donate to help cover these type of expenses. The 32-year-old confirmed the suspension in a Facebook post last month. "The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you," Bridgewater said. "So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. "And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem." After joining Miami Northwestern in 2024, Bridgewater led his alma mater to its first state championship since 2019. The program heads into the season as the fourth-ranked team in the state, per to the Massey Ratings. Bridgewater returned to the NFL as Jared Goff's backup with the Detroit Lions in December but did not appear in a regular-season game. Bridgewater completed his only pass for 3 yards in the Lions' divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders. In 10 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (2014-15, 2017), New Orleans Saints (2018-19), Carolina Panthers (2020), Denver Broncos (2021), Miami Dolphins (2022) and Detroit (2023-24), Bridgewater completed 1,372 of 2,067 passes (66.4 percent) for 15,120 yards with 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions. He added 844 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground. Bridgewater was named to the Pro Bowl in his second season after starting all 16 games for the Vikings and leading them to an 11-5 record. Three children are orphaned after their football coach father died - just months after their mother
Three children have sadly been left orphaned after their football coach father died only five months after his wife following a brief illness. Caoimhe, 19, Fionn, 15 and their younger sister, Teagan, have been left without parents after the death of their Royal Army Medical Service warrant officer, Guy McFadden-Newman. The 'loving' father and 'beloved' husband died surrounded by his children and wider family in hospital on July 30, in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. His 'dearly loved' wife and the mother of his children, Lieutenant Colonel Kerry McFadden Newman, passed away just five before on February 24, 2025. Mr McFadden Newman coached local football team, Portrush FC Youths, for nearly a decade, who described him as a 'real gentleman', a 'good friend', and a 'very well-respected and dedicated coach'. The 'absolutely devastated, shocked and heartbroken' club said in a statement: 'Everyone at Portrush FC Youths wish to offer their sincerest sympathy and condolences to Caoimhe, Fionn and Teagan and the wider family circle at this very sad and difficult time. 'Guy was a very well respected and dedicated coach at Portrush FC Youths for almost 10 years with his son Fionn and later with his daughter Teagan who both played for the club 'Guy was a real gentleman and a good friend to many. He was always first to step up and offer assistance to anyone needing help at the club. 'Nothing was too much bother for Guy, he always had a smile on his face, loved his role as a coach at the club, always showed a great example to all the kids he coached over his many years at the club and made many good friends through the club. 'Guy will be sadly missed by all that had the good fortune to know him.' Adding how their hearts go out to Guy and Kerry's children, who tragically lost both parents in a short amount of time, they said: 'RIP Guy and Kerry who will now be reunited and together forever.' A local theatre, where the family regularly participated, also released a touching tribute to the father, who was 'a quiet part of the panto family'. 'We are shocked and saddened at the loss of our friend, Guy McFadden-Newman. It comes too soon after the loss of our Kerry and our hearts go out to Caoimhe, Fionn, Teagan and the wider family circle,' the statement read. 'Guy has been a quiet part of our panto family since we began, usually being volunteered by Kerry for a role or two backstage and supporting her and the kids while they took to the boards. 'Although he might try and convince others that he was coerced, he did it all with a smile on his face and we loved having him involved. 'Family is at the heart of what we do in panto and there is no other family that has put quite so much into it.'
