Two LSU football players make Athlon Sports' preseason All-SEC team

USA Today15 hours ago

Two LSU football players are projected to earn First-Team All-SEC honors, according to Athlon Sports' 2025 College Football Preview, released earlier this summer.
Linebacker Whit Weeks made the cut, as did Barion Brown in the kick returner role. LSU didn't place all-conference players on offense, with Texas QB Arch Manning getting the nod over Garrett Nussmeier.
Weeks left LSU's Texas Bowl win vs. Baylor with an ankle injury, but that was after the linebacker enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore. Weeks ranked second among SEC linebackers in stops and pressures. He was a havoc creator, sacking the quarterback four times, forcing two fumbles, and batting down two passes.
After surgery, Weeks missed LSU's spring practice but is expected to return as LSU kicks off fall camp later this Summer.
As for Brown, he transfers to LSU already with five kicks returned for a touchdown. Brown is expected to be a dynamic weapon on LSU's offense, but Tiger fans should expect Brown to be a difference-maker on special teams, too.

Tigers slugger's injury forces early exit, leaving status in doubt

Tigers slugger's injury forces early exit, leaving status in doubt originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tigers right fielder Kerry Carpenter is heading for the MRI tube on Monday morning. He was forced to exit Sunday's game due to a hamstring injury. After hitting an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning, Carpenter grimaced in pain while rounding the bases and quickly left the game. Advertisement 'I'll get an MRI tomorrow,' Carpenter told reporters after the Tigers' Sunday night win over the Twins. 'The staff here has done a great job of getting me back pretty quickly, so we'll see how it goes. But I think we're all pretty optimistic about it.' While the injury is concerning, Carpenter's optimistic outlook offers some hope for a quick recovery. Before the injury, Carpenter had been on a tear, continuing his strong recent performance. He gave the Tigers an early lead with a solo home run to right-center field, his second consecutive game with a homer and his third in the past five games. Advertisement As of June 29, he holds a .252 batting average with 16 home runs and 32 RBIs. His .515 slugging percentage and .341 expected weighted on-base average (xwOBA) highlight his ability to drive the ball effectively. Statcast data further underscores his offensive prowess, with an average exit velocity of 91 mph, a hard-hit rate of 45.3%, and a barrel percentage of 13.3%. If Carpenter has to miss time, the Tigers are likely to turn to Wenceel Perez in right field. For now, the team remains hopeful that the MRI results will show no serious damage, and Carpenter can return to the lineup sooner rather than later. Scouting Report Reveals Surprise On When Ravens' Lamar Jackson is Most Deadly

Scouting Report Reveals Surprise On When Ravens' Lamar Jackson is Most Deadly originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Lamar Jackson, and he is also among the league's best when it comes to making throws after extending the play. Advertisement In a recent article by PFF's Mason Cameron, he ranks the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL based on time to throw. At No. 1 when it comes to throwing after 2.5 seconds in the pocket, they have the Raven' superstar. "One of the contributing factors to Lamar Jackson being named PFF's most valuable player this past season is his ability to extend plays and then take advantage of coverage with lethality," Cameron wrote. "His 31 big-time throws on dropbacks with more than 2.5 seconds to throw led the NFL. He was one of just two quarterbacks to notch a big-time throw rate above 10% on those plays, cashing in with a league-leading 29 touchdowns." It makes it easier to extend a play and stay in the pocket when you can juke and spin around defensive lineman that are coming your way. And that is exactly what Jackson can do, and he put together an impressive 2024 season as a result. It might be a surprise to some for Lamar to rate high as a pocket passer. But the numbers do not lie ... Advertisement The 28-year-old field general racked up 4,172 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just four interceptions in the passing game. And he was obviously also able to contribute on the ground with 915 yards and four touchdowns with his legs. Baltimore has made the playoffs each of the last three seasons, but has come up short every time. Jackson will be looking to turn that around and lead the team to their first Super Bowl appearance since their win in 2013. Auburn Star Jabari Smith Inks $122 Million Extension With Rockets

Auburn Star Jabari Smith Inks $122 Million Extension With Rockets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In a blockbuster move that signals big plans for the Houston Rockets, former Auburn standout Jabari Smith Jr. is set to sign a five-year, $122 million rookie contract extension, as reported by ESPN insider Shams Charania on Sunday evening. Advertisement The deal, negotiated with his agent Wallace Prather of LIFT Sports Management, is fully guaranteed through the 2030-31 season, locking in the No. 3 pick from the 2022 NBA Draft as a cornerstone of the Rockets' young core. Smith, who averaged 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds last season despite a mid-year hand injury, showcased his potential in the playoffs with a sizzling 45.5% three-point shooting rate. His unique blend of size, skill, and upside—evidenced by being the only player from his draft class with 2,500 points and 1,500 rebounds—has convinced the Rockets to invest heavily. Advertisement The move has sparked mixed reactions. Fans and analysts praise the $24 million annual commitment as a steal for a 22-year-old with All-Star potential, especially given his limited playoff minutes. Yet, some question the hefty price tag for a player still finding consistency. The Rockets' faith in Smith, reinforced by their refusal to include him in the Durant trade, underscores a strategy to build around youth while leveraging future salary cap growth. As the NBA offseason heats up, this extension marks a pivotal moment for Smith, who could thrive alongside Durant and a talented roster. Auburn fans rejoice, while the Rockets brace for a new era.
