Ren powers China into showdown with Japan
"I am satisfied with my performance today," Ren told Xinhua. "I see it as the result of many years of hard work, and it's a kind of recognition for me." Both teams entered the match tied with a 7-1 record, and the winner would earn a spot in Sunday's final against Japan, which topped the standings with a perfect 9-0.
Looking into the second encounter with the world No. 1 after Friday's 10-0 loss, Ren noted: "I hope we can play our game just like we did today, cherishing every pitch and every swing, and doing everything we should do." China took an early lead with Ren's two-run homer in the first inning and extended it to 3-0 in the third, when Yan Siyu's double and Xie Yue's RBI single brought pinch runner Gui Yuanyuan home, prompting Chinese Taipei to replace starting pitcher Ke Hsia-Ai with Chu Yi-Shan.
Lin Feng-Chen answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the third, but China restored its three-run cushion in the fourth as Wang Bei singled, Li Jiaqi walked, and He Xiaoyan reached on an error to score Zeng Zhilin.
In the fifth inning, Ren struck again with her second home run after Xi Kailin's single to widen the gap, and despite Chinese Taipei loading the bases and pushing across a run on a fielder's choice, pitcher Chai Yinan's strikeout ended the threat at 6-2.
China scored two more points and resisted Chinese Taipei's late comeback efforts in the seventh to seal the 8-4 victory.
With the victory, China finished second in the standings behind Japan with an 8-1 record, enough to secure its berth for the 2026 World Cup. The only remaining ticket will be up for grabs in the bronze medal match between third-placed Chinese Taipei (7-2) and fourth-placed the Philippines (6-4) on Sunday.
Elsewhere on Saturday, India edged Malaysia 6-5 for its first win of the tournament, after falling to Japan 16-0 earlier in the day. South Korea routed Malaysia 15-0, the Philippines blanked Hong Kong, China 12-0, and Singapore beat Thailand 7-2.
The Asia Cup also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games. South Korea, China's Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand joined the top four teams in earning their spots.

Snoop Dogg becomes co-owner of Championship club Swansea
US rapper Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr aka Snoop Dog speaks during the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California on May 3, 2023. --AFP Snoop Dogg has become co-owner of Championship side Swansea City in an unlikely alliance between the world of rap and football, the Welsh club announced. The 53-year-old American star joins former Real Madrid stalwart and Croatia World Cup finalist Luka Modric in the club's ownership structure. Snoop Dogg made a surprise appearance on the club's social media channels last week modelling their new home jersey for the 2025-26 season and the club announced on Thursday that he has become an investor. His involvement comes after American businessmen Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen took over the club last November. Swansea will hope that Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, can use his 100 million-plus social media followers to boost the club's profile as they seek to return to the Premier League for the first time since they were relegated in 2018. Swansea's owners have said they want to generate greater revenue, which would allow them to invest more in new players under the profit and sustainability rules in British football. The 53-year-old rapper said on the club's website: 'My love of football is well known, but it feels special to me that I make my move into club ownership with Swansea City. 'The story of the club and the area really struck a chord with me. This is a proud, working class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me. 'I'm proud to be part of Swansea City.' Swansea announced in April that Modric, who this week joined AC Milan at the age of 39 after leaving Real Madrid, had acquired a stake in the club. 'To borrow a phrase from Snoop's back catalogue, this announcement is the next episode for Swansea City as we seek to create new opportunities to boost the club's reach and profile,' Swansea's owners said in a statement. 'Snoop's colossal global fanbase and audience will certainly help us do that, and he has made clear to us throughout this process just how excited he is at the prospect of joining the club. 'Snoop has openly shared his love of football and his desire to be involved in the game and we expect his involvement to support us putting as competitive a team as possible out on the field.' Swansea's Welsh rivals Wrexham have achieved a meteoric rise to the Championship -- the second-tier of English football -- since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club in 2020. — AFP

Messi brace powers Miami past Red Bulls
NEW YORK, July 20 (Xinhua): Lionel Messi scored two goals and set up another as Inter Miami recovered from a goal down to crush New York Red Bulls 5-1 in the MLS. German defender Alexander Hack gave the hosts the lead by volleying home from Emil Forsberg's corner at the near post. Messi then sent a sublime through ball into the path of his former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba, who took a touch before rifling a shot into the far corner. Alba turned provider three minutes later as his cut-back allowed Telasco Segovia to fire in a first-time effort from eight yards. Inter Miami was suddenly in overdrive, and Venezuelan midfielder Segovia made it 3-1 just before halftime as he pounced on a loose ball to slot home from distance. Messi extended his side's lead by running onto Sergio Busquets' defense-splitting pass from deep inside his half and rounding goalkeeper Carlos Coronel before rolling the ball into an unguarded net. The Florida outfit completed the rout in the 75th minute when Messi chested down Luis Suarez's cross and smashed his shot into the top-left corner. Messi has now scored at least twice in six of his past seven matches. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner now has 18 goals and seven assists in 18 MLS outings this year. Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano heaped praise on Messi after the match, saying the Argentine proved yet again why he is one of the greatest players in history. "Ultimately, I think any sports fan, not just football fans, admires these types of athletes, whether it's Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan in his time, Rafa Nadal," Mascherano told a post-match news conference. "These are people who have transcended sports, and the reality is that those of us who have the opportunity to experience this up close are very privileged." The result leaves Inter Miami fifth in the Eastern Conference with 41 points, seven points behind leaders Cincinnati, but with three games in hand. The New York Red Bulls are ninth, eight points further back.
