Mets' Juan Soto Breaks Silence on All-Star Snub

The New York Mets earned a win in their Subway Series rematch against the crosstown rival New York Yankees as the three-headed monster at the top of their batting order puts it together.
After a relatively slow start to the season, blockbuster addition Juan Soto has begun to look more like himself alongside star teammates Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. But apparently Soto's resurgence hasn't been enough to earn him a fifth consecutive trip to the All-Star game.
Alonso and Lindor will be headed to the Midsummer Classic, as will Edwin Diaz, but Soto lost out to the Arizona Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll, Miami Marlins' Kyle Stowers, San Diego Padres' Fernado Tatis Jr. and Washington Nationals' James Wood.
"Sometimes you're gonna make it and sometimes you don't," Soto said in response to missing the game, per Dan Martin of the New York Post. "It's just part of baseball."

Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million record contract to join the Mets this year after earning four All-Star nods and four Silver Slugger Awards in a row with three different teams. The fact that he has missed the honor in his debut season with the Mets isn't a great sign for that contract, but he has been enjoying a strong campaign after a turnaround in the past month.
He is slashing .263/.396/.508 with 21 homers and a 3.7 WAR so far. Stowers, by comparison, has just a 1.7 WAR mark this year, although he is Miami's lone representative.
But in his response about the snub, Soto downplayed the importance of making the All-Star game and vowed to improve.
"For me, I try to play as hard as I can and help the team and enjoy the moment," he added, according to Martin. "Everyone wants to be an All-Star and live the experience of being there, but this year it didn't happen. I was glad I was able to be there four years in a row. If I didn't make it this year, it's no big deal. I'll come back stronger next year."
For Soto and the Mets, the season will be judged on the playoff results, not those in the first half.

Naylor homers as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 6-3 on Machado's big night
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer against his original team and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Diego 6-3 on Monday night after Padres slugger Manny Machado got his 2,000th career hit. Machado hit a hard shot off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading off the fourth inning and received a standing ovation. Machado, whose milestone hit came off starter Zac Gallen, became the fifth active player and 297th overall to reach 2,000 hits. Machado's third hit of the night was a homer off Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth, his 15th of the season and 357th of his career. The All-Star slugger also had a single in the first. Machado grounded into a game-ending double play against Kevin Ginkel, who earned his second save. Yu Darvish (0-1) made his season debut for the Padres after being sidelined with right elbow inflammation since spring training. Nolan Schanuel earns walk-off walk to lift Angels past Texas Rangers
Travis d'Arnaud knows Jacob deGrom better than any other catcher in baseball. He's caught the hard throwing right-hander 60 times, the most-frequent backstop the former Cy Young award winner had thrown to in his career. That familiarity did d'Arnaud and the Angels well en route to their 6-5 victory over the Rangers (44-47) on Monday night, in which Nolan Schanuel walked off their American West foes in the ninth with a bases-loaded, RBI walk. The veteran catcher ambushed deGrom in the second inning for a two-run home run, just hitting the ball hard enough — 97.4 mph — over the left field wall to reach the seats. d'Arnaud's home run broke deGrom's Rangers franchise record streak of 15 consecutive starts with two or fewer runs given up — and provided the Angels (44-46) with an early 3-2 lead. Later in the game, with deGrom in line for the win, d'Arnaud knotted up the game during a two-out rally against relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong, striking a double to deep left-center field to score Luis Rengifo, who reached base on a single. A batter later, LaMonte Wade Jr. channeled the 'Throwback Week' theme at Angel Stadium, reverting back to the clutch hitting that earned him the nickname 'Late Night LaMonte' in San Francisco. But none of that mattered when Schanuel came to the plate with the bases loaded, washing away an 0-for-4 night with his walk-off walk. The Angels placed veteran right-handed relief pitcher Hunter Strickland on the 15-day injured list with right-shoulder inflammation on Monday afternoon. Strickland, who had pitched 22 innings in 19 games to the tune of a 3.27 earned-run average for the Angels, said he felt his arm get stiff before pitching against the Blue Jays on Sunday. During his outing, in which Strickland struck out one batter in a scoreless inning, the 36-year-old said the stiff sensation in his arm got worse, causing the IL stint. Cuban righty Víctor Mederos was called up from triple-A Salt Lake City in his place. 'We're just hoping for the best and see what they say,' Strickland said, adding that he will get an MRI on Tuesday. Robert Stephenson (stretched nerve in right bicep) said he began throwing again on Monday — soft toss — after soft-tissue recovery helped 'fully heal' the nerve. 'I don't think it's gonna be a quick process, but at least I can start building up,' said Stephenson, who is in the second year of a three-year, $33 million contract with the Angels. Stephenson has thrown just one inning as a member of the Angels, hurting himself in his second appearance back from Tommy John surgery on May 30.
