Taking intermittent quizzes reduces achievement gaps and enhances online learning, even in highly distracting environments
Inserting brief quiz questions into an online lecture can boost learning and may reduce racial achievement gaps, even when students are tuning in remotely in a distracting environment.
That's a main finding of our recent research published in Communications Psychology. With co-authors Dahwi Ahn, Hymnjyot Gill and Karl Szpunar, we present evidence that adding mini-quizzes into an online lecture in science, technology, engineering or mathematics – collectively known as STEM – can boost learning, especially for Black students.
In our study, we included over 700 students from two large public universities and five two-year community colleges across the U.S. and Canada. All the students watched a 20-minute video lecture on a STEM topic. Each lecture was divided into four 5-minute segments, and following each segment, the students either answered four brief quiz questions or viewed four slides reviewing the content they'd just seen.
This procedure was designed to mimic two kinds of instructions: those in which students must answer in-lecture questions and those in which the instructor regularly goes over recently covered content in class.
All students were tested on the lecture content both at the end of the lecture and a day later.
When Black students in our study watched a lecture without intermittent quizzes, they underperformed Asian, white and Latino students by about 17%. This achievement gap was reduced to a statistically nonsignificant 3% when students answered intermittent quiz questions. We believe this is because the intermittent quizzes help students stay engaged with the lecture.
To simulate the real-world environments that students face during online classes, we manipulated distractions by having some participants watch just the lecture; the rest watched the lecture with either distracting memes on the side or with TikTok videos playing next to it.
Surprisingly, the TikTok videos enhanced learning for students who received review slides. They performed about 8% better on the end-of-day tests than those who were not shown any memes or videos, and similar to the students who answered intermittent quiz questions. Our data further showed that this unexpected finding occurred because the TikTok videos encouraged participants to keep watching the lecture.
For educators interested in using these tactics, it is important to know that the intermittent quizzing intervention only works if students must answer the questions. This is different from asking questions in a class and waiting for a volunteer to answer. As many teachers know, most students never answer questions in class. If students' minds are wandering, the requirement of answering questions at regular intervals brings students' attention back to the lecture.
This intervention is also different from just giving students breaks during which they engage in other activities, such as doodling, answering brain teaser questions or playing a video game.
Online education has grown dramatically since the pandemic. Between 2004 and 2016, the percentage of college students enrolling in fully online degrees rose from 5% to 10%. But by 2022, that number nearly tripled to 27%.
Relative to in-person classes, online classes are often associated with lower student engagement and higher failure and withdrawal rates.
Research also finds that the racial achievement gaps documented in regular classroom learning are magnified in remote settings, likely due to unequal access to technology.
Our study therefore offers a scalable, cost-effective way for schools to increase the effectiveness of online education for all students.
We are now exploring how to further refine this intervention through experimental work among both university and community college students.
As opposed to observational studies, in which researchers track student behaviors and are subject to confounding and extraneous influences, our randomized-controlled study allows us to ascertain the effectiveness of the in-class intervention.
Our ongoing research examines the optimal timing and frequency of in-lecture quizzes. We want to ensure that very frequent quizzes will not hinder student engagement or learning.
The results of this study may help provide guidance to educators for optimal implementation of in-lecture quizzes.

"Creating a career which is so exciting and so full of promise is great." Star Trek: Prodigy's Bonnie Gordon, 39, will serve as a mentor at the camp, a job she calls a "no-brainer" to take. "Not only am I a huge fan of space exploration and science, I'm just a big fan of mentoring young girls and children in science," she tells PEOPLE. "I feel like there's so much here on Earth that we have yet to explore and so much that NASA and space programs have accomplished in space, advancing technologies. There's just so much we can learn where everything's connected." Plus, she adds, "Pushing these young women to be whatever they want to be, pushing the boundaries of not just space, but science and their own personal discoveries, is just a dream come true for me." Gordon crossed paths with Nichols in their shared time in the Star Trek universe at fan conventions and events. Nichols — who died in July of 2022 at 89 years old — enjoyed decades in the spotlight thanks to her screen work, her music career and her activism to help more women succeed in the field of astronomy. Her breakout role came when Gene Roddenberry cast the actress as Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original Star Trek series. When the show first aired in 1966, Nichols was one of the first Black women to play a major role on primetime television. Following the end of the science-fiction series, Nichols worked to recruit diverse astronauts to NASA, including women and people of color. Among those who were recruited as a result of the program was Sally Ride, the first female American astronaut. Not long after her death, her ashes were sent into space via a Celestial Memorial Spaceflight. "I don't think people realize how groundbreaking she was, not just in entertainment, but in science, because so many little girls who watched Star Trek growing up saw that they could have a future in science," Gordon says. "There's so much that she's left behind. She was a big believer in the philosophy of infinite diversity and infinite combinations, which is basically the Vulcan philosophy." While she's excited for the actual content of camp — simulations, moon walks and more — Gordon is thrilled "to be part of something that moves life forward," she says. "There's so much happening right now where people are trying to cut and constrain when it comes to science, where people who are different or have different values or views are being constrained," she says. "I feel like now is the time to break those boxes open and work together. We can find common ground on so many different levels if we communicate with others and not let hate or anger blind us." The Nichelle Nichols Foundation does just that, she adds. And she hopes to see the camp grow and thrive for years to come. "I know the goal is to make this program bigger and better," she adds. "This is just the beginning. And if it continues to grow, that just means it's going to give even more opportunities to young women in the future." Why being a parent could give your career a boost
For decades, research has warned of a " motherhood penalty" in the workplace: women who have children are sometimes viewed as less committed and less competent, diminishing their chances of promotions or raises. However, a new major study found the script may be outdated — and that parenthood may actually help some employees. A paper published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found no evidence of a motherhood penalty in a series of large-scale experiments. It was authored by Christopher D. Petsko, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at UNC Chapel Hill; Rebecca Ponce de Leon, an assistant professor at Columbia Business School; and Ashleigh Shelby Rosette, professor of leadership at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. Instead, the researchers found what they called a "parenthood boost" — a tendency for people to evaluate parents more favorably than their childfree peers, regardless of gender. "I was very surprised, yes," Petsko told Business Insider about the findings. "The motherhood penalty has been such a foundational finding in the behavioral sciences that seeing it not replicate was striking." "That said, society has changed a lot over the last couple of decades, and it's not unusual for phenomena that were first documented 20 years ago to look different today." No penalty, but a boost for some In a series of four large-scale experiments with 4,742 participants, Petsko's team revisited the classic motherhood penalty studies with a new lens: racial identity. They manipulated race, gender, and parental status in fictional employee profiles and asked participants to rate these employees' competence, warmth, and suitability for promotion. Not only did the researchers find no evidence of a penalty for mothers, they concluded that the opposite was true. Parents were consistently rated more positively than non-parents, regardless of gender. However, there was a catch. While both Black and white parents received a boost, the increase was significantly larger for white employees. When the researchers combined data from all four experiments, they found that white parents were perceived as more competent and warmer and were less likely to be discriminated against than their childless peers. Black parents, by contrast, didn't enjoy the same bump. In some cases, they saw no change in evaluation at all when parenthood was introduced. "Truth be told, we're not sure," Petsko said when asked why white parents seemed to benefit more. "Something that seems plausible — at least to me — is that the societal prescription to 'raise a family' might be something that people hold more strongly for members of dominant racial groups than for members of non-dominant racial groups," he said. "And if that's the case, then it would make sense for people in the US to more strongly reward parenthood when they see it in white employees than when they see it in Black employees." However, Petsko said his comments were purely "speculation" and that there was no data to help determine the causes of this racial bias. Not over yet Petsko said he did not want companies to conclude that the findings meant that motherhood penalties were now "a thing of the past." "Although motherhood penalties didn't emerge in our experiments — which assessed single-shot impressions of men versus women in the workplace — they do still seem to emerge in other kinds of studies," he said, citing longitudinal studies of men's versus women's wages after they become parents. Instead, Petsko said parenthood itself may trigger biased evaluations. "There truly may be a systematic tendency to think of someone as more competent at their jobs, and even as more deserving of promotion, simply because we've learned that they have children," he said. "And if that bias is real — and not just real, but directed more strongly toward white employees than toward Black employees — then companies ought to know about it. Companies can't create equitable work environments if they aren't aware of the biases that underpin their decision-making."
