Italy skipper Joe Burns hopes to play vs India in 2026 T20 WC opener

Having led Italy to their maiden World Cup qualification, the European team's Australia-born captain Joe Burns wants to "jump in at the deep end" during the T20 showpiece next year by taking on defending champions India in the opening match itself.
Italy made the cut for the event in India and Sri Lanka next year with a solid showing in the European Qualifiers that concluded earlier this month. The draws for the World Cup are still some time away from being finalised.
"You come to your first World Cup and you want the big stage. I'd love to be playing India in the first game in India," Burns told ICC Digital.
"I'd love to be playing Australia, England or all the top teams, that's the experience that you're after. You want to test yourself, you want to really jump in at the deep end," he added.
Burns said qualifying for the tournament was still a "surreal" feeling for him.
"A lot of planning and preparation went into it (qualifying). So it's satisfying from that aspect from the cricket side as well," he said.
He said the entire process was emotional for him and for the rest of the team.
"We did one week training camp in Rome, one week in the UK, and I said to them the first day in Rome, 'I don't care if we're playing Luxembourg in the first Sub-Regional game or India in a World Cup Final. I just want us to be the most prepared team in world cricket'..., A former Australia player with four Test centuries to his credit, Burns made it to the Italian squad due to his mother's heritage. It helped him pull through a personally challenging phase which included dealing with the death of his brother Dominic.
"For me, it was an opportunity to unite family and cricket, and I think for our group, everyone has a really similar story to that.
"We did a great culture piece in Rome (in the build-up to the Qualifier), about who we are, where we come from, understanding each other's families and sacrifices made...," he said.
Former Canada international John Davidson is the head coach of the team, with ex-Scotland international Dougie Brown and Ireland star Kevin O'Brien as his assistants.
"I've seen a group of players who have grown and developed into a really close-knit group," O'Brien said.
"That can be difficult with players coming from different parts of the world but the common joining force with this squad is the Italian heritage.
"I've seen the guys improve, and that is not only with their cricket skills, it's all the other things that you need to be successful in International cricket, like attitude, fitness, awareness, cricket smarts, and work ethic," he added.

I Wasnt Trying To...: Tim David Reveals What Helped Him In Scoring Record-Breaking T20I Century For Australia

Tim David smashed a record-breaking century for Australia against West Indies in the third T20I at St Kitts. David's unbeaten knock (102 off just 37 balls) was the fastest T20I century ever by an Australian and it helped Australia chase down 215 with 23 balls to spare in the third T20I against the West Indies and secure the series 3-0 with two matches still to play. It was a memorable knock for the 29-year-old, who achieved a personal milestone he wasn't sure he'd ever reach, considering his batting position in the lineup. Notably, David walked in at 61/3 in 5.5 overs and put on a show with the bat, hitting 11 sixes and six fours along the way. "I don't play for records, but certainly I didn't think I'd get the opportunity to score a hundred. It is your childhood dream to score a hundred for Australia, so that was definitely in the back of my mind," Tim David said after the match. "The position I've been playing, I've played a lot of T20 matches now and obviously I've never scored 100, so it was a little bit of foreign territory for me for a little bit. I'm just really thankful I had Mitch Owen out there, who's scored a couple recently. My younger teammate, but certainly his experience helped me through," he added. During his memorable knock, David broke the previous record for the fastest-ever T20I century by an Australian, surpassing Josh Inglis' 43-ball ton against Scotland last year. The 29-year-old's knock came with calmness and clarity, combined with sheer brutality of hitting and in his eyes, it all came down to preparation. "I practice it a lot and to be honest, a lot of the practice I've been doing recently over the past six months has helped a lot," David said. "It's about shot selection and not actually trying to hit it too hard. It felt tonight like I wasn't trying to hit it too hard and it probably ended up with a good percentage of being able to hit the ball over the ropes," he added. Fastest T20I Century By An Australian Player Against Balls Tim David West Indies, 2025 37 Josh Inglis Scotland, 2024 43 Aaron Finch England, 2013 47 Josh Inglis India, 2023 47 Glenn Maxwell India, 2023 47 A key figure in his innings was 24-year-old Mitch Owen, whose presence at the other end provided David with a steady hand and infectious energy during the mammoth chase. They combined to forge a 128-run stand off just 44 deliveries, with Owen remaining unbeaten on 36 off 16. "What Mitch has been doing and the player he is now, he just backs his strengths and it's nice for someone like me to see that as a reminder," David said. "You've got a guy coming in with fresh energy and he backs himself so much and picks the positive options, so that rubbed off on me and it was great," he added. Interestingly, the venue, Warner Park in St Kitts, holds special memories for David, who first made a mark here during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). That early experience, he admits, played a part in helping him navigate conditions under the lights. "I've got really happy memories of playing here at Warner Park. The CPL was my first or second franchise gig overseas, so a lot of memories that you hold at the start of your career," David said. "It's nice to come back here and to build on those, but to have a bit of experience and understand the conditions. It's going to be a pretty special one to remember," he added. The fourth T20I between Australia and West Indies is scheduled for Saturday, July 26 at the same venue.

Spain's women battled sexism and indifference. Now the world champions are eyeing European title

BARCELONA: If the women's soccer players of Spain have gone from nobodies to title contenders in less than a decade, it hasn't come easy. The national team has had to fight for better coaching, decent travel conditions, and modern training facilities. It paid off with a World Cup title in 2023, the Nations League crown last year, and on Sunday they face England in the European Championship final. "It has been a constant with the national team that we have had to fight for acceptable work conditions that would allow us to play at our best," former Spain defender Marta Torrejón told The Associated Press by phone on Friday. Torrejón lived through the lean years, the time when playing for her country felt like, in her words, a "waste of time." And she knows from talking with Barcelona teammates who still play for their country how much things have improved. Torrejón retired from international soccer after the 2019 World Cup as Spain's then most-capped player with 90 appearances. She has since helped Barcelona win three Champions League titles and a slew of other trophies. She also played a part in one of the revolts Spain's women have staged to demand more from the men who run the game. After the 2015 World Cup, Torrejón and other players successfully pushed for the removal of coach Ignacio Quereda, who had run the team for nearly three decades, for his poor preparation ahead of the team's first appearance in the competition. Quereda was later accused by former players of verbal abuse, an allegation he denied.
