Just Frustration: Piastri Explains Radio Cursing at Alpine

Asharq Al-Awsat2 days ago
McLaren's Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri said cursing at former employers Alpine over the radio at last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix was just a humorous way of expressing his frustration.
The Australian made a comment after having to go off track to avoid Renault-owned Alpine's Argentine driver Franco Colapinto.
"Alpine still managed to find a way to (expletive) me over all these years later, huh?," he told race engineer Tom Stallard in an exchange not broadcast on television at the time.
Piastri told Reuters at a McLaren fan event in London's Trafalgar Square on Wednesday that his swearing had just been spur of the moment.
"It was just kind of a frustrating coincidence. My qualifying got hampered by an Alpine. I got impeded in the race by both the Alpines. So, it was kind of just a build-up of a few things," he said. "And it was more out of frustration.
"I still have a lot of friends at Alpine. A lot of people that I respect a lot.
"It was just kind of an ironic coincidence that the things that hampered me a bit in the weekend were all with Alpine. But, yeah -- more just me trying to express my humor and frustration in the race."
Piastri joined McLaren after being named by Alpine as their driver for 2023, only for the Australian to very publicly reject the seat with a statement that has become part of Formula One lore.
Then Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer questioned the driver's integrity, and threatened legal action, but McLaren won easily when the matter went to the contract recognition board.
Alpine are now last in the championship, and are still going through turmoil, while McLaren won the constructors' title last year and are runaway favorites again.

The Landostand makes Silverstone glow as Lando Norris targets British Grand Prix victory

Expectations are high for Lando Norris to deliver a breakthrough victory at his home British Grand Prix. Nowhere more so than in the Landostand. Fans in McLaren orange and the luminous yellow of Norris' helmet gathered for Formula 1 Friday practice at the new Landostand–actually a series of stands–around the outside of one of Silverstone's most famous corners, the sweeping, lightning-fast Stowe. Much like the banks of Dutch fans who support Max Verstappen at races around Europe, the dedicated stand is a sign of Norris' newfound status in F1 and the strength of his support as he battles teammate and standings leader Oscar Piastri. A sign of status: Norris the driver has emerged as a genuine title contender over the last 12 months, and Norris the brand has grown, too. Norris has spoken in the past about the effort he makes to block out distractions and criticism, but says the Landostand, where he's visiting fans throughout the weekend, is a 'positive distraction' ahead of Sunday's race. Norris has yet to win at Silverstone in seven attempts in F1–his best finish was second in 2023–and said Thursday that he'd swap all his other victories, even his prized Monaco win in May, for first place at the British Grand Prix. 'It'll be the one that probably puts the biggest smile on my face, bigger than Monaco, and it's the one that since I was a kid and since I first started watching Formula 1 that I've wanted to win the most,' Norris said. Norris got the better of Piastri in a race-long battle for the win at last week's Austrian Grand Prix. He also won Piastri's home race at the Australian Grand Prix at the start of the year, but Piastri said he doesn't get any extra motivation to beat Norris in front of the British crowd. 'The crowd's always been actually quite nice to me, which has been nice, but I'm not really concerned about that. I'm more focused on trying to get another win on the board,' he said Thursday. Hamilton's hopes. More than ever, the F1 title race seems to be an all-McLaren affair. Max Verstappen of Red Bull is coming off a first-lap retirement in Austria last week and has been fending off questions about a potential move to Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton has a record nine victories at the British Grand Prix, but a 10th seems a long way off as he endures a difficult first season with Ferrari. He's yet to finish on the podium in a Grand Prix race this season. 'There's always magic here at Silverstone, and so I really have to hope for that,' Hamilton said Thursday. 'I'm hoping that weather, all sorts of things can help us because we are obviously naturally not as quick as the McLarens, and if it stays dry then they will walk the race.'

More than 20 are injured, including one seriously, when bus flips over in northeastern Germany

A bus carrying travelers from Denmark to Austria skidded off a road in northern Germany and flipped over on Friday, injuring more than 20 people, including one seriously, police said. The bus, operated by Flixbus, left the Autobahn motorway in the pre-dawn hours on an exchange leading to the city of Röbel, about 140 kilometers (85 miles) north of Berlin, police said. The cause of the accident was under investigation. Twenty-three people were injured on the bus carrying 53 passengers and two drivers from Copenhagen to Vienna, according to Flixbus. Rescuers took about two hours to extract one seriously injured victim. Emergency services, the fire brigade, and a rescue helicopter responded. Authorities sealed off the area of the road throughout Friday morning. Flixbus expressed great dismay that the bus crashed and said it was working with authorities to determine the cause of the incident.

F1 Team Alpine Appoints Steve Nielsen as Managing Director

Formula 1 team Alpine has appointed Steve Nielsen as managing director to oversee its daily operations. The team said in a statement Friday that Nielsen will start in his role in September ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. He will be reporting to the team's executive advisor Flavio Briatore. The pair has been enjoying a strong relationship for years. Nielsen's appointment came in the wake of Otmar Szafnauer's and Alan Permane's departure from the Team Principal and Sporting Director roles in July, moves that saw Briatore return to the team. The appointment marks a return to the team for Nielsen, who is one of the most long-standing and well-respected figures in the sport and has previously spent multiple stints at Enstone for Benetton and Renault – most notably as Sporting Director during the 2005 and 2006 championship-winning years, Alpine said. Nielsen has also worked with other teams and held roles at the FIA and Formula One. Alpine is sixth in the constructors' standings.
