F1 Team Alpine Appoints Steve Nielsen as Managing Director

Al Arabiya10 hours ago
Formula 1 team Alpine has appointed Steve Nielsen as managing director to oversee its daily operations. The team said in a statement Friday that Nielsen will start in his role in September ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.
He will be reporting to the team's executive advisor Flavio Briatore. The pair has been enjoying a strong relationship for years. Nielsen's appointment came in the wake of Otmar Szafnauer's and Alan Permane's departure from the Team Principal and Sporting Director roles in July, moves that saw Briatore return to the team.
The appointment marks a return to the team for Nielsen, who is one of the most long-standing and well-respected figures in the sport and has previously spent multiple stints at Enstone for Benetton and Renault – most notably as Sporting Director during the 2005 and 2006 championship-winning years, Alpine said. Nielsen has also worked with other teams and held roles at the FIA and Formula One.
Alpine is sixth in the constructors' standings.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah ‘truly lost for words' after Diogo Jota death

BEIRUT: Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah paid tribute to his teammate Diogo Jota on Friday, after the Portuguese international died in a car crash on Thursday in northern Spain. 'I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break,' Salah said on social media platform X. Jota perished alongside his brother, Andre Silva, when the Lamborghini they were in veered off a road and burst into flames, Spanish police said Thursday. Having been teammates since Jota joined the Premier League champions in 2020, Salah wrote on X: 'Teammates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back. I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Team mates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go… — Mohamed Salah (@MoSalah) July 4, 2025 'My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.' Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was 'heartbroken' to learn about Jota's death. Klopp, who is Red Bull's head of global soccer, had persuaded the Liverpool board to pay $62 million for Jota after he impressed at Wolverhampton Wanderers. 'This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it! I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father!' Klopp posted on Instagram. The Spanish Guardia Civil said 28-year-old Jota and 25-year-old Silva were found dead near the northwestern city of Zamora. Jota's death comes just weeks after he married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. Upon getting married, Cardoso wrote in a social media post, 'Yes to forever.' He leaves behind three children, the youngest born last year.

Euro 2025: Long VAR Review of 4-Plus Minutes Decides No Penalty for Denmark Against Sweden

A video review of more than four minutes was needed to decide Denmark should not be awarded a penalty against Sweden early in their Women's European Championship game on Friday. Brazilian referee Edina Alves was whistled and jeered by fans during the long delay. She studied the incident on a fieldside monitor before deciding to award a free kick to Sweden instead. Play eventually resumed in the 11th minute–fully five minutes after the incident in question in the Sweden penalty area. A free kick awarded for a foul against Denmark captain Pernille Harder was lofted toward the star forward, who tangled with the falling Sweden winger Madelen Janogy. Harder was unable to control the ball, which ran to safety toward Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. Replays of the incident eventually showed Janogy had herself been tripped by a Denmark opponent on the edge of the penalty area as she ran back to defend the cross. Alves was invited to referee at Euro 2025 as part of an exchange program between European soccer body UEFA and South America's CONMEBOL.

Red Bull's Christian Horner says Max Verstappen intends to stay despite Mercedes links

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has said Max Verstappen intends to stay with the team for next year despite speculation about a move to Mercedes, which would shake up Formula 1. Verstappen has repeatedly declined to say he's committed to Red Bull for 2026 following a suggestion last week from Mercedes' George Russell that his team spoke with Verstappen. Russell doesn't have a contract for 2026. The four-time world champion has a contract through 2028 at Red Bull, but there have been indications that a performance-related clause could allow him to exit earlier. The exact details are not public. 'The contracts between the drivers and the teams are always going to remain confidential. With any driver's contract there is an element of a performance mechanism and of course that exists within Max's contract,' Horner said on Friday at the British Grand Prix. 'His intention is that he will be there and driving for us in 2026. It's inevitable that he's of huge interest to any other team in the pit lane.' Horner suggested Russell probably triggered all this speculation to strengthen his hand in talks with Mercedes. 'I think the most important thing is the clarity that exists between Max and the team and that's very clear,' Horner added. Horner also said of Verstappen: 'He's made it quite clear that he would like to finish his career in a Red Bull car from start to finish. I think that's quite special and unique for him.' Russell said on Thursday he believed there was an exceptionally low chance he'd have to leave Mercedes for 2026. Horner added that Yuki Tsunoda will get the rest of 2025 to show he deserves to keep a seat at Red Bull, but signaled he'd consider a range of options inside and outside the wider Red Bull organization, including Liam Lawson and his rookie Racing Bulls teammate Isack Hadjar. Tsunoda was promoted to Verstappen's teammate in March after Lawson struggled in the first two races. 'Yuki has got until the end of the season to demonstrate that he's the guy to remain in the car,' Horner said. 'We have Isack also doing a good job and Liam finding his form as well. So within the Red Bull pool we have talent. Of course you're also open to what is outside of that. We want to field the best lineup that we can for next year. We've gone outside of that pool in recent years. If we feel the necessity to do so we wouldn't be afraid to do so again.'
