Pussycat Dolls icon reveals startling details of drug addiction for first time

Metro6 hours ago
Ashley Roberts, best known as one-fifth of the Pussycat Dolls, has revealed for the first time the details of her decades-long battle with prescription drug dependence.
The hidden struggle that began in her teenage years and shadowed her rise to global pop fame.
Now 42, the pop star described how her addiction to the anti-anxiety medication Xanax began during high school, part of a long trajectory of self-soothing with substances.
Even as a child, she turned to over-the-counter sleep aids like NyQuil. In adulthood, Lexapro followed, and then Xanax became a near-daily crutch.
'I was so young and I didn't have the knowledge I have now,' Roberts reflected in a new interview with The Times.
'Xanax is addictive. For me, for decades I was just leaning on what I could get to help me crash out. My brain just wouldn't shut off and my anxiety was too intense.'
Discovered in Los Angeles by Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin, she joined the group in 2003 at just 22. Their 2005 debut album PCD became a multi-platinum global hit, propelling them onto a relentless international tour schedule.
'There were no discussions around, 'How is your mental health?'' Roberts said. 'I remember once we were in three countries in one day. Eventually, my body just got to the point of shutdown. I was really, really sick.'
The breaking point came in London, nearly five years after the band's meteoric rise.
Roberts was admitted to hospital with suspected neurological damage and medics feared she'd suffered a brain aneurysm. It was later diagnosed as extreme stress, exhaustion, and burnout, worsened by chronic sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and unmanaged anxiety.
Despite the crisis, she remained locked into performance-mode: 'I remember saying [in the hospital], 'I need to get on a flight to Germany. I've got a show to do. You gotta give me something.' That was the mentality.'
When she finally left the group in 2010, Roberts's body was in turmoil: she had shingles across her face, eczema covering her legs, a stomach ulcer, and a collapsed immune system. More Trending
'An acupuncturist told me then, 'If you don't scream, your body's gonna scream for you,'' she recalled.
While Roberts avoids placing blame directly on the male-dominated music industry, her story lays bare the punishing realities of commercial pop at the time – a culture that encouraged silence, competition, and constant productivity.
'There was also this feeling that we could be replaced in some way,' she said, 'But also there was my own drive, growing up as a dance competitor. So it was a combination of the two.'
Now living a more grounded life, Roberts credits breathwork (a therapeutic practice of conscious breathing) with helping her finally break free from dependency and reconnect with her body.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A new Coronation Street spoiler video reveals the moment David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) learns some shocking news from brother Nick Tilsley (Ben Price). It all kicks off when Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton) escapes from prison. Having been incarcerated for the murder of Craig Tinker (Colson Smith), he's desperate to reunite with his family and do a runner. Sally and Tim Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor and Joe Duttine) almost scupper the plans when they reveal to his son Brody (Ryan Mulvey) that his little sister Joanie (Savanna Pennington) is heading to Weatherfield High for a taster day. Having finally made his escape, the school is the first place Mick heads to. He storms through the corridors and locks Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) and headteacher Orla Crawshaw (Carla Mendonça) in her office, hoping that he would now have free reign to track down his daughter. Little does he realise, Sally has taken her back to Coronation Street and is taking her on a tour of the factory. Later in the week, Nick is concerned that his son Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) is keeping something under his hat about the incident. Usually a level headed and chatty young lad, he's suspiciously quiet and refuses to engage. After a conversation with Hope Dobbs (Isabella Flanagan), it becomes apparent that Sam's life was almost on the line when his cousin Lily Platt (Grace Ashcroft-Gardner) refused to help. More Trending She shut herself away in a classroom, and refused to allow him in. Seriously troubled by the incident, Nick heads to the salon to confront David about what happened and his jaw-drops upon realising what his daughter did. He tries to play the incident down, saying that Lily wouldn't purposely endanger Sam, and promises to talk to her. View More » Why has Lily behaved so irresponsibly? Influencer couple brutally mocked over newborn son's obscure name: 'He's going to be teased'

An influencer couple has been brutally mocked online over their newborn son's obscure name. Clarissa Caleb and Shaquan Roberts, known as Riss & Quan, have gained more than three million subscribers on YouTube by documenting their day-to-day endeavors as parents to three young boys. But when they recently revealed their youngest son's moniker to the world, they faced immense backlash over what they decided to name him. In a video shared to TikTok earlier this week, Clarissa and Shaquan were seen holding up a heart-shaped glass case that was filled with little balls. 'Baby boy's name is...' Clarissa said before trailing off. 'Three, two, one,' Shaquan said as he opened up a small hole at the bottom of the glass case. The balls then fell out one by one, eventually revealing their newborn's moniker written underneath: Secure Arris Roberts. The clip got nearly three million views, and many people took to the comment section to slam the unusual baby name. 'Who names they baby Secure?' asked one user. 'What's wrong with parents these days?' wondered another. 'Sometimes I think y'all forget you are naming future adults,' someone else wrote. 'Secure? You parents in this generation really don't get it. "Secure" is a word that describes a feeling. It's not a name. But to each his own,' read a fourth comment. A fifth said, 'They be calling anything as names to kids these days.' 'You guys owe him an apology,' a different user scathed. 'Poor baby when he starts school he's going to be teased,' added another person. The couple also share sons Shine Anthony Roberts and Saviour Azaire Roberts. The clip got nearly three million views, and many people took to the comment section to slam the unusual baby name In a follow-up video, they explained, 'As you guys can see we decided to keep the theme of the [initials] SAR.' 'Shaquan came up with the first name and I came up with the middle name,' Clarissa dished. Clarissa also pointed out that his middle name 'has a little piece of her' in it, explaining, 'Arris actually means "best" or "superior." But it also has "ris" in there. 'It's Greek and my first name, Clarissa, is Greek as well. I just thought it was cute, I don't know.' 'We put a ton of thought into his name, like we always do,' Shaquan added. 'We definitely wanted to go with something unique, a name that pretty much not many people in this world have.

Danny Devito gives rare update on close friend Jack Nicholson's welfare

Danny DeVito has shared details of his friend Jack Nicholson's recent welfare as the 88-year-old has rarely been seen in public over the last decade. Once known for his frequent appearances courtside at Laker's games, Nicholson is now rarely seen out and about, with the recent exception of his cameo during the live broadcast of SNL50: The Anniversary Special in February. DeVito, 80, has been close friends with Nicholson since the pair first worked together on One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest 50 years ago. 'I just saw Jack a couple weeks ago — it was his birthday a month ago, and he's great,' DeVito told People Magazine in a recent interview. Nicholson and the Always Sunny in Philadelphia star bonded on the set of the iconic film, with DeVito going on to star in the Nicholson-directed 1978 comedy Goin' South three years later. They also both appeared in James L. Brooks' seriocomic, 1983 Best Picture winner Terms of Endearment, the 1992 biopic Hoffa directed by DeVito, and the 1996 Tim Burton comedy Mars Attacks!. 'We were in the presence of this guy who's really at his moment,' DeVito says, reflecting on meeting Nicholson during production of the now-classic 1975 drama. By then, Nicholson had already built a formidable résumé with Easy Rider, Carnal Knowledge, The Last Detail, and Chinatown. Cuckoo's Nest would cement his status, earning him his first Academy Award for Best Actor and launching a career that would tally 12 nominations and three wins. Despite that, DeVito says Nicholson remained deeply grounded. 'He started out exactly the way everybody else did, where he couldn't get a job,' DeVito recalls. 'It was like he came to Hollywood and he was going to just write and direct, and then Easy Rider comes along after the Corman stuff… So he was in our milieu, and he was always just as open and genuine, and we all felt it immediately.' Nicholson was last seen on Saturday Night Live's 50th birthday special, with the show pulling stars that included Steve Martin and Sir Paul McCartney as well as Nicholson. The 87-year-old has rarely been seen in public in the 15 years since his last film, How Do You Know, released in 2010. Got a story?
