There's no doubt that it was an amazing 2024 season for the Ohio State Buckeyes, which was capped off with a national championship win, defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23.

Much of the team's success fell onto the shoulders of true freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who now enters 2025 with some extremely high expectations, as ESPN BET ties him for the second-best odds (+900) to win the Heisman Trophy.
There's no doubt that winning that kind of award would be amazing, but while talking to The Athletic's Manny Navarro, the young wide receiver revealed what he's most looking to accomplish next season.
'I'm just trying to win another natty — that's what I'm focused on,' Smith said. 'All the other individual accolades will come after that.'

Continuing the same success certainly isn't out of the cards for Ohio State, as it currently sits at No. 4 on ESPN's FPI, behind the Texas Longhorns, Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide.

Smith, who last season appeared in 16 games, accumulating 76 receptions, 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns, has the potential to play one of the biggest roles in the team's success going into 2025.
However, winning it all once again could be viewed as a big ask, considering that only three have been crowned national champions in back-to-back seasons since 1980, with the most recent occurrence being Georgia in 2021 and 2022.
Smith and Ohio State's hopes of joining that list will be tested very early on, as they host the Longhorns for a Week 1 matchup, with ESPN BET placing them as three-point favorites.
Even if the Buckeyes do fall short, though, Smith potentially becoming just the sixth wide receiver in college football history to win the Heisman Trophy would serve as a nice consolation prize.

Cubs Reportedly Interested in Pirates Third Baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes

Cubs Reportedly Interested in Pirates Third Baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes originally appeared on Athlon Sports. How long is the Chicago Cubs' leash for rookie third baseman Matt Shaw? The Opening Day starter at the hot corner, Shaw was sent down to Triple-A Iowa for a period this season before reassuming his duties at third. Advertisement The 23-year-old has been better since his late May call-up, with a .246 batting average, a .655 OPS, one home run, and 10 stolen bases over his last 35 games. However, he is still at a .222 batting average, a .617 OPS, a 79 OPS+, and an 18:42 BB:K ratio for the year. Shaw's defense is also a work in progress, and it is unclear if he can remain a starter for a Cubs team with real World Series aspirations. Should Chicago look elsewhere for an improvement at the trade deadline, Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes could be a name to watch for: Here is the latest on Hayes: Hayes, 28, has three more years of club control at $7 million and two additional years at $8 million before facing a club option at $12 million in 2030. The Pirates are seemingly perpetual deadline sellers, but the division tax and Hayes' long-term contract should drive the price for the Cubs. Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw (6) bats in the second inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Lysaker-Imagn Images Hayes is an excellent defender (2023 Gold Glove winner) with outstanding range, albeit a lackluster arm, and could provide Chicago with more stability on that side of the ball. Advertisement But his .246 batting average, .601 OPS, 67 OPS+, and just two home runs over 78 games are not exactly the ideal upgrade over Shaw. This is no down year, either, as Hayes, over six MLB campaigns and 554 games, has a .256 batting average, a .685 OPS, and an 89 OPS+. Hayes is an intriguing player, but the trade cost and risk of impeding Shaw's development, even in this crucial summer, do not feel like a wise move. Cubs' Kyle Tucker Decision Could 'Gnaw' on Fans Amid Latest Rumors

Cubs' Kyle Tucker Decision Could 'Gnaw' on Fans Amid Latest Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs signaled during the offseason that they wanted to win a World Series as early as this year. Trying to make a blockbuster trade, the Cubs did exactly that when they landed Kyle Tucker. Advertisement Tucker has been as good as advertised, and as a result, Chicago has been a better team than it has been over the recent years. Sitting in first place in the National League Central, despite struggling over the past 10 games, the Cubs are 49-35 and 4-6 in their last 10. Tucker has been a big part of their success, but there's a hefty price tag that will come along with keeping him. Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker (30) celebrates his home run against the St. Louis Cardinals in the third inning at Busch Vizer-Imagn Images When examining the entire situation, including who they traded him for and other factors, Northside Baseball recently noted that this trade could "gnaw" at the fan base for quite some time if Jed Hoyer doesn't secure a deal to retain his star this winter. Advertisement 'If Kyle Tucker walks, this trade could gnaw at Cubs fans for years. Some of that will just be in their heads, since again, Smith might not be this guy if he were still with the Cubs. Nonetheless, dealing a great prospect like Smith means the checkbook needs to be opened to keep Tucker around—if only for our collective mental health,' they wrote. Hoyer also has a contract that he has to figure out himself, as he only has a few months left on his remaining deal. If he can keep Tucker around, make the right moves at the deadline, and more, there would be a reason to keep him, too. Cubs' All-Star Offseason Addition Has Had 'Huge' Impact on Team

Cubs' All-Star Offseason Addition Has Had 'Huge' Impact on Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros this offseason to bolster their lineup and add a gold-glover to their outfield. Advertisement After making the All-Star game each of the last three years in Houston, Tucker has exceeded expectations only in 2025. On 670 The Score's Mully & Haugh Show, they asked the question of whether the Cubs would be in first place in their division if they hadn't made the Tucker trade? David Mulligan's answer was clear and straightforward. "No, no. I think Kyle Tucker has had a huge, huge impact on this team and made them a better baseball team," Mulligan said. "And I think he's an excellent player." David Haugh's cohost quickly agreed as Tucker leads the team in batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS. Advertisement "I don't disagree with that. Anyone who disagrees with that doesn't watch baseball." Haugh said. At the midway point in the season, Tucker is batting .287 with a .395 OBP and a .922 OPS. The three-time All-Star is on pace to set career highs in hits, home runs, steals, and walks, truly producing as an all-around player. The Mully & Haugh Show also argued that Tucker's production has left a significant imprint on the production of the rest of the Cubs' offense. Chicago's offense ranked No. 12 in runs scored in 2024, accumulating 736 runs, and ranked No. 20 in home runs with 170. This season, the Cubs are ranked No. 2 in runs, scoring 437, on pace to shatter last year's total of 874 runs, and rank third in home runs, with 119 at the midway point. Advertisement Tucker's impact in the Cubs' lineup cannot be understated, slotted in the No. 2 hole for most of the season. Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong, who hit behind Tucker in the lineup, have had massive seasons. Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker (30) hits a two-run home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth inning at Chase Scuteri-Imagn Images Suzuki hit 21 home runs and collected 73 RBI in total in 2024. This year, the Cubs' slugger has already matched his 21 home runs and has 67 RBI just 80 games into the season. For Crow-Armstrong, although it can be attributed to a year of development, the young superstar has broken out in 2025. He's hitting .272 with an .863 OPS, and has hit 21 home runs and driven in 61 runs. Tucker's contract is up at the end of the season, and his impact with the Cubs has been monumental. He will be due for a massive deal in free agency, especially if he continues the second half of the season the way he's started in 2025.
