Egypt FM begins 5-leg West Africa tour for bolstering ties, counterterrorism efforts
Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty travelled on Monday to the Nigerian capital, Abuja, beginning his tour to five West African countries, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and coordination on counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel and West Africa. The five West African countries are Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Senegal. The African tour followed Egypt's active participation at the 47th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, where President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi and FM Abdelatty held several meetings with African leaders and officials. During that session, El-Sisi announced the launch of the New Partnership for Africa's Development's (NEPAD) Centre of Excellence for Climate Initiatives in Cairo, describing the step as essential to equip the African countries with tools for adaptation and resilience. "Despite ongoing regional and international challenges, Africa holds vast potential and numerous opportunities for achieving sustainable development and prosperity," the president affirmed. For his part, FM Abdelatty discussed ways to intensify cooperation with African countries during the event. He stressed the importance of leveraging the expertise and capabilities of leading Egyptian companies, particularly in the energy, construction, healthcare, and infrastructure sectors. Abdelatty also highlighted Egypt's ongoing efforts to support development in Africa, particularly through the activities of the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "EAPD supports Africa's development aspirations through the provision of capacity-building assistance, the transfer of knowledge, skills, and expertise, and the promotion of creative industries," El-Sisi said during the 23rd African Union Summit in June 2014. US, UK upgrade Egypt travel advisories in recognition of stability - Tourism
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf welcomed on Friday the recent decisions by the United States and the United Kingdom to upgrade their travel advisories for Egypt to Level Two. In a statement, Khallaf noted that Egypt has been placed under the US State Department's Level Two: Exercise Increased Caution category, alongside countries such as France and Germany, describing the move as a "notable positive step." He also highlighted the updated UK travel advisory, which emphasized that nearly one million British citizens visit Egypt annually—a reflection, he said, of the country's stable and secure environment. Khallaf stressed that these updates are the result of extensive diplomatic efforts by Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its embassies abroad to improve Egypt's international standing. Before the change, the US travel advisory had placed Egypt at Level Three: Reconsider Travel, urging Americans to avoid visiting due to safety concerns. The UK also maintained more restrictive guidance for certain areas, especially outside of major tourist zones. The revised travel guidance is expected to boost tourism flows and support Egypt's economy, strengthening its position as a leading global destination for historical and cultural tourism. Ethiopia Engages Diplomats on Climate Finance Ahead of Africa Climate Summit
Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has held consultations with the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa ahead of the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), calling for stronger international financial and technical support to address the continent's climate challenges. The meeting, held this week, focused on mobilizing global climate finance for Africa's green development agenda, with particular attention to equitable support for African-led climate solutions. ACS2 is scheduled for September 8–10, 2025, at the Addis International Convention Centre under the theme 'Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa's Resilient and Green Development.' The consultations were opened by Foreign Minister Dr. Gedion Timothewos and moderated by Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa. Officials emphasized that while Africa contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change. The Ministry of Planning and Development presented the summit's concept note, outlining the summit's vision and objectives. Abas Mohammed, CEO at the Ministry, said ACS2 would seek to unlock grant-based climate finance and drive sustainable investment across Africa. Participants highlighted Ethiopia's own initiatives, such as the Green Legacy reforestation campaign, as examples of domestic climate leadership that require international support to scale. The Government of Ethiopia, in partnership with the African Union, has also launched the official ACS2 website. ACS2 follows the first Africa Climate Summit (ACS1), which was held in Nairobi in September 2023. That summit resulted in more than $20 billion in pledged financing and the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration, which called for expanded investment in renewable energy and carbon markets. According to organizers, ACS2 aims to build momentum for Africa's unified climate finance position ahead of major global forums, including COP30, G20, and the UN General Assembly.
