Non-bailable warrants issue: 73K cases pending, Madras HC appoints nodal officer
CHENNAI: Expressing concern over thousands of cases pending in courts for decades across the state due to issues in executing non-bailable warrants (NBWs), the Madras High Court has directed subordinate courts and the Director General of Police (DGP) to strictly follow the orders and guidelines of the Supreme Court in this regard. Citing the report filed by the Registrar General, the judge said 73,699 cases are pending at the stage of execution of NBWs from 1985 to June 2025 across the courts in Tamil Nadu. Commenting that pendency of warrants from 1985 'reflects a breakdown of the system', Justice P Velmurugan appointed R Mahesh Babu, a retired chief administrative officer of district judiciary, as the nodal officer to review the situation in subordinate courts and submit reports. File action taken report in 3 months: Judge to DGP The judge, in the order passed on Friday while disposing of a batch of petitions seeking directions to the police to execute NBWs against accused persons and subordinate courts to take charge sheets on file, also told the DGP to file an action taken report in three months.

15 arrested, 500 booked after violence in Pune's Yavat over 'objectionable' WhatsApp post
The Maharashtra Police has arrested 15 people and registered FIRs against more than 500 individuals after an irate mob vandalised properties and indulged in arson in Yavat in Pune's Daund tehsil over an objectionable post on social media. (PTI) The youth, who posed the objectionable status on messaging platform WhatsApp has also been arrested, an official told PTI on Saturday. Communal tension erupted in Yavat village in Daund tehsil of the city on Friday where several groups of persons vandalised and set ablaze properties over the objectionable content. A huge mob took to the streets to vent their ire and set ablaze a motorcycle and damaged a bakery even as the police lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control. Narayan Deshmukh, Yavat police station senior inspector, said 15 people have been arrested so far and remanded in police custody till August 6. Four of the cases are against more than 500 people who were allegedly involved in arson and damage to property. Of these, more than 100 people have been identified," an official from the Yavat police station told PTI. Police said that those involved in the incident targeted a motorcycle, two cars, one religious structure and a bakery. The police had to resort to tear gas shells and lathi-charge to disperse the mob after they indulged in arson. Meanwhile, prohibitory orders have been issued in Yavat and the situation is under control. 'Preliminary report says no planned conspiracy' Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill said the preliminary probe has not indicated to any planned conspiracy in the incident. He, however, said that no conclusions can be drawn until the inquiry is over. "Till Saturday afternoon, police have registered five FIRs in connection with the incident," Gill said, adding that the person whose objectionable post triggered the violence has resided in the village for years. The official also said the police responded quickly to the violence and brought the situation under control. "A large contingent of security personnel, including State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), has been deployed in the village. Authorities also imposed prohibitory orders under Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) section 163 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 144 from Friday night. They will remain in place till the situation is assessed further," Gill was quoted as saying by PTI. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also visited the site on Friday and said the youth who allegedly uploaded the objectionable Whatsapp post hails from Nanded and is a daily wage labourer. He put out an objectionable post related to an incident that took place in Madhya Pradesh, which angered the locals and they resorted to vandalism, Pawar said.

AP police launch interoperable criminal justice system 2.0
Vijayawada: In a step towards modernizing the criminal justice system, Andhra Pradesh police has formally launched the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) 2.0 — a nationwide digital initiative approved by the ministry of home affairs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With an outlay of Rs 88.03 crore, the state has begun deploying high-end hardware and digital infrastructure across all five core components of the justice delivery system — police, prisons, prosecution, forensics, and courts. Director general of police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta said that the initiative is aimed at creating a paperless, seamlessly integrated, and technology-driven ecosystem to enhance transparency, coordination, and efficiency across departments handling criminal cases. By investing in advanced equipment and cybersecurity systems, the state is expected to accelerate investigation and trial processes, improve evidence management, and ensure secure data exchange among institutions. "AP police department has also set a benchmark in cost-effective procurement by acquiring best-in-class devices at the most competitive prices nationally — saving substantial public funds. As part of the rollout, the state has procured 4,575 all-in-one desktops for police stations, court complexes, forensic labs, prisons, and prosecution offices, along with 1,259 webcams to enable video conferencing and digital evidence recording," the DGP added. To strengthen field-level operations and digital documentation, 520 high-end laptops have been distributed to public prosecutors and other key personnel, while 2,264 rugged mobile data terminals (MDTs) are being provided to crime scene responders for real-time documentation. In addition, 1,483 multifunction printers, 6,792 SD scanners, and 1,051 QR code-based readers and printers have been deployed for high-volume document handling and efficient evidence tracking, he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state has also installed 1,109 fingerprint enumeration devices across police stations for accurate biometric identification and introduced 208 biometric attendance systems in central and district jails to enhance prison security and transparency. All equipment comes with a three-year onsite warranty and dedicated OEM support stationed at every district headquarters, ensuring smooth maintenance and operational continuity. Among the most impactful features of ICJS 2.0 is the integration of MDTs with key applications like eSakshya and eSummons, which allow investigators to record witness statements and serve legal documents digitally. The system is also fully integrated with the crime and criminal tracking network & systems (CCTNS) and MedLEaPR (Medical Legal Examination and Postmortem Reporting), improving collaboration between police, forensic teams, and medical authorities. A QR-code based chain-of-custody mechanism has been introduced to digitally track the movement of evidence, while a next-generation security framework has been embedded across all edge devices. The system enables centralized monitoring, AI-powered threat detection, and real-time trust verification to safeguard sensitive data. "With ICJS 2.0, AP emerges as one of the leading states in adopting digital transformation in criminal justice. By setting high procurement standards and integrating advanced technologies across sectors, the state is redefining justice delivery, reducing delays, and reinforcing public trust in the system," the DGP said. He further added that the initiative reflects the state's commitment to fast, secure, and transparent justice, while promoting inter-agency collaboration and modern governance.
