'I'm a used car expert and this is the best £7k small motor to buy'
Buying a first vehicle, especially a used car, can be a tricky business for many customers as it often comes accompanied with high insurance costs for inexperienced drivers. This means choosing a car that has a small engine, small power output, and isn't very large to keep insurance as cheap as possible.
However, with the cost of living going up and the second car market seeing prices rise, it can be hard to work out which car to buy, even if you have a relatively healthy budget of £7,000.
This was the problem faced by one motorist who went to AutoExpress for advice on the best car to buy for that price. In response, motoring expert Ryan Birch said it all depended on what one was looking for.
Whilst he recommended the Seat Mii, the Renault Twingo and the Citroen C1, when it came to practicality he suggested the Spanish Mii.
He said: 'From behind the wheel, the Mii is hard to beat. It shares a platform with the Volkswagen up! so the handling is crisp and it's surprisingly enjoyable to drive. The Mii is also surprisingly spacious, with more accommodating rear seats than the Citroen and a respectable 251-litre boot.
Ryan added: 'Lower-spec SE models are equipped with alloy wheels, electric front windows, air-conditioning and a leather steering wheel as standard. A DAB radio can also be specified, along with a dashboard-mounted navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity.'
Whilst the Mii was the practical choice, Ryan didn't rule out the Renault Twingo, praising it for having a good turning circle, robust interior and goo rear seat space.
Meanwhile, the Citroen C1 was given good marks for its distinctive looks, and the fact it was affordable and easy to drive. He caveated: 'Citroen offers a variety of coloured panels and trims to add a dash of personalisation to the cabin of its city car.
'However, material quality isn't up to the best in the class, and the layout of the controls isn't as intuitive as the SEAT's interior.'
This isn't the first time French cars have been recommended as good first cars. The Daily Express' Christopher Sharp also recommended another French car, the Renault Clio.
Writing in 2023 about why he recommended the Clio, which he'd named after a tank, Christopher said it's practicality and the fact it had great visibility made it ideal for a new driver getting used to Britain's roads.
He wrote in the Daily Express: ' The little Clio has a high rear end and a wide boot aperture. What this means is that it's easy to get big things in and out of it.
'The car was so capacious and the boot aperture so square that it had more carrying capacity than some SUVs at the time.
'Two of the most important elements of choosing a car for a new driver is that it must be comfortable and easy to drive.
'With soft suspension and light controls, the Clio had these in spades. Despite its 1.2 litre engine, it was an able motorway cruiser with impressive economy for the engine's diminutive size.'

Fiat 600 Hybrid Icon joins range, offering more kit for your money
Fiat has added a new Icon trim level to the 600 Hybrid range in the UK, splitting the base car and top-spec La Prima models on price and standard equipment. The new variant will be available with 99bhp or 135bhp hybrid powertrain options, costing from £26,860 for the former and £27,860 for the latter. Both are £1,500 more than the base car, and on sale now. Standard equipment for the Icon includes 17-inch bi-tone alloy wheels, a two-tone white and black interior, front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, embedded navigation and keyless entry and start. There's also a wireless charging pad for mobile devices. Advertisement - Article continues below This builds on a decent level of standard equipment on the base 600 Hybrid, which comes with air-conditioning, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, seven-inch digital driver's display, LED headlights and gearshift paddles for the automatic transmission. If you're in the market for the 600 Hybrid, or any of Fiat's electrified models, check out the Auto Express marketplace for some great deals. The two specifications of hybrid powertrain are based on the same technical package, which combines a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a small electric motor and 48V mild-hybrid system. Both options come with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, and can deliver 57.8mpg on the WLTP combined cycle and 109g/km. Performance varies between the two, though, with the 99bhp variant claimed to take 10.9 seconds to reach 62mph, while the 135bhp option brings that figure down to 8.5 seconds. There's no word yet whether Fiat will also offer an Icon trim level for the all-electric 600e. For now it will soldier on with base RED and top-spec La Prima variants. Buy a car with Auto Express. The Honda Civic has got an angry new look
With the new Prelude coming in early 2026 and the current Civic entering its fourth year on sale, Honda has decided it's the right time to give its hybrid Toyota Corolla rival a revamp. All three trim levels come down by over £1,900, with the entry Elegance now costing £33,795, the mid-spec Sport £35,395 and the range-topping Advance £38,695. Also changed for the revised Civic are the looks. 'Refined in response to customer feedback', according to Honda (and to keep the Civic looking fresh alongside the upcoming Prelude), there's a more aggressive front bumper and lower grille, with the latter finished in gloss black, and a new upper grille and trim around the headlight for what the brand described as a 'sharper, sportier look'. Advertisement - Article continues below The Civic also loses its front fog lights to 'further streamline the design', with improved LED headlights ensuring visibility is maintained. Down the side there are new 18-inch two-tone, diamond-cut alloys (grey for Advance and black for Sport trims), plus a gloss black finish to the window surrounds. Honda has also switched up the colour choice with Seabed Blue (a finish we've seen on the HR-V already) replacing Premium Crystal Blue. Platinum White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl and Premium Crystal Red Metallic are kept from before. If the new Civic's looks aren't to your tastes, Auto Express has loads of pre-facelift Honda Civics to choose from so check out the Used Car Marketplace here . Honda has tweaked the Civic's cabin too with a new black headliner, matte chrome detailing on the air vents and on the top Advance trim, ambient lighting and footwell lights. Sport adds a heated steering wheel (new for the Civic) and as standard every version gets the same 10.2-inch driver's display albeit with improved graphics. Elegance also now gets wireless smartphone charging on the centre console. The Civic's hybrid engine and CVT transmission remain unchanged so there's a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 181bhp and 315Nm of torque. The Civic's efficiency has improved however, from 56.5mpg to a combined 60.1mpg. Acceleration remains the same as before at 7.9 seconds to 62mph.
