Shirsat calls Raj, Uddhav ‘Saheb', sparks speculation in political circles

Shirsat has recently been in the news after facing a series of allegations related to the acquisition of immovable assets amounting to crores of rupees. There are reports that he was unhappy as no one from Mahayuti govt backed him.
Since parting ways with Uddhav Thackeray during the Shiv Sena rebellion, Shirsat remained one of his most vocal critics and often referred to Uddhav Thackeray without any respectful prefix or suffix.
Shirsat's later gesture occurred during a news conference he held on Saturday in the city and quickly drew attention within political circles, especially given his past criticism of Uddhav Thackeray. The use of the honorific 'Saheb'— commonly reserved for senior politicians or those held in high regard — while mildly criticising him for making political speeches raised eyebrows amid recent political realignments in the state.

Prakash Mahajan, a senior office-bearer of MNS, said, "Change in Shirsat's tone is the result of the Thackeray cousins coming together. All I can say is this is just the beginning." Shirsat was among the first rebel Shiv Sena MLAs who, after siding with Eknath Shinde, released a video against Uddhav Thackeray and voiced dissent during the 2022 political rebellion in Guwahati. He openly criticised Uddhav's leadership and working style by releasing both a letter and a video.
Shirsat's recent display of respect towards both the Thackerays was seen as a possible softening of his stance or a strategic shift amid changing political equations. Although Shirsat did not elaborate on his remarks, insiders suggested the move could indicate attempts at rapprochement or political pragmatism ahead of upcoming civic polls. Political observers watched closely to determine whether this rhetoric signalled a broader trend of thawing relations between factions or merely an isolated gesture.

Twenty years on, Thackeray cousins bury the hatchet
MUMBAI: SHIV Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said he and his cousin, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, have joined forces in the interest of 'Marathi pride' while sharing a political stage with him after nearly 20 years. Uddhav sounded bullish when he said he and Raj will capture power in the Mumbai civic body elections and Maharashtra together. 'We have come together to stay together,' he asserted. At the public rally titled 'Awaj Marathicha' to celebrate the rollback of two government resolutions on introducing Hindi as a third language from Class 1 in state schools, Uddhav said, 'We won't let the government impose Hindi on us.' MNS leader Amit Thackeray, Raj's son, was seen sharing a hug with Uddhav's son Aaditya on the stage. Uddhav alleged that the people who are in power in Maharashtra, are 'slaves of two Gujaratis. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde are in power, not to serve the interest of Maharashtra and Marathi manoos, but of their bosses in Delhi. We will never tolerate Hindi in Maharashtra. We will fight to safeguard our culture and language.' On the rollback of the three-language formula in Maharashtra, both brothers said the BJP-led government had no other option. 'The government rolled back the decision on the three-language formula due to the strong unity shown by Marathi people. This decision was a precursor to the plan of separating Mumbai from Maharashtra,' the MNS chief said, with Uddhav seated next. Raj, in a lighter vein, credited Fadnavis with bringing him and Uddhav together, a feat even Balasaheb Thackeray could not accomplish. 'Your power is in the legislature, ours on the streets,' Raj said to thunderous applause.

Uddhav's Mumbai rally against Hindi imposition encouraging, says CM Stalin
CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin said in a tweet on Saturday that the language war waged by the DMK and the people of Tamil Nadu against Hindi imposition has transcended state boundaries and sparked protests in Maharashtra. He was referring to the rally against Hindi imposition in Mumbai led by Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday. He further said the BJP, which disregards the law, says it would allocate funds only if Tamil Nadu schools agree to teach Hindi as the third language. However, in a state which is ruled by BJP itself, it had to back down fearing public backlash. Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray jointly participated in a rally in Mumbai to celebrate the victory after the Maharashtra state government rolled back its decision to introduce Hindi as the third language in primary schools. Referring to Raj Thackeray's questions at the rally- 'What is the third language in UP or Rajasthan?' and 'Why is Hindi being forced on non-Hindi-speaking states while Hindi-speaking states remain economically backward?', Stalin said, 'I know the union government, which gives preference to developing Hindi and Sanskrit, will have no answers to these questions.' 'Will the union government shed its vindictive approach of insisting on the three-language policy under the NEP and release the Rs 2,152 crore SSA funds to Tamil Nadu?' the CM asked.
